Right on! For me, I think it's probably Lenzi's most interesting gialli, depending on the day I might agree with you. Eyeball is more like gialli comfort food, hits all the beats, but basically does nothing original. My favorite part of that film is that they're all from Burlington, Vermont.
I love Spasmo, think it's Lenzi's best film it has no crazy over the top characters which is a nice change of pace rather it's a subdued chamber piece, maybe even more horror than giallo. It's like, a surreal dream almost for the lead character with everybody treating him like he's nuts and accusing him of being 'strange'. I think Hoffmann does a good job as the bewildered protagonist, as an actor he was often a bit stiff but I buy that he's a confused person here it comes across well. Kendall is, well herself really nothing too exciting acting-wise she has all the most ridiculous lines which isn't helping her. Score's great and the rest of the cast is good too, they're all behaving just quietly weird enough for poor Hoffmann to question his own sanity. The smug Howarth is not my cup of tea. 🍵
Thanks for the comment Larry. In some ways I agree… the more I think about Spasmo it feels like the one where Lenzi got the most out of the least. It really is perhaps his most visually impressive film and at least a somewhat unusual giallo. As far as Hoffman goes, I’m a bit mixed. For myself he comes across as a flat actor but it sort of works here.. at least it works better than other roles. Cheers! -James
