    Loved watching your thoughts on business! ❤ There is no way I'm going to purchase anything anyone expects royalties that is grown from the ground. That would be like a potato farmer paying an extra tax for seed potatoes every year. That is a tax and most certainly a usery fee. I'd most likely give all those tubers away or let them rot away in the ground.

    Hi Cat and John. Cat it’s good to see you in a video. Your flowers look beautiful by the way. I can see so much wrong in what these places have done. I’d be rather upset had I drought any off their products. But any recent purchase that still have their products in good condition should get a refund. Bad choices they all made and sad for all who grow or sell. Great video.

      @OldReddingFarm  2 месяца назад +1

      I (now) understand they don't sell anything themselves, but it is analogous in many many ways. There are both similarities and differences, and we discuss both companies and their choices.

  • @zaneymay

    They can't do anything.
    If there is a Patton on a plant it has to be there before purchase, so you can buy in when you purchase your plant for reproduce.
    I do the best I can at making sure I do not get a Patton plant.
    I am putting together an order where the nursery sales both because they have bought in, but the plants that I am going to purchase are not. They do this with lots of plants that would have to be dug up in your area.
    Dahlias do not have to be dug up in their zone, they can be left in the ground.

    Thank you for the thorough explanation. I won't be buying any of the Coseytown or KA varieties. I'm getting a little fed up with all the gouging. Even Floret has become way to pricey, but at least they are not asking for royalties on what those 17.00 packets of seeds produce. There are TONS of people wanting to buy tubers, your business should not be in harming your fellow community to make a buck.

    If it's not greed, what could one call it? Your 18 yr business is unsustainable at scale, you stick your hand in someone else's pocket? If one does that, don't the growers one bought from originally, get to stick their hands in _your pocket_ *Ridiculous* 💐

    I don't agree with the retroactive part of this. They could do it going forward in their terms and conditions at the time of purchase. They also should have a partner that does have the space to help grow crops in cooperation with them. I grow Scoop Scabiosa with the understanding that I cannot propagate or resell plants, only the flowers that season. I don't think just because they are tubers makes it any different than propogating a limelight hydrangea, growing it, watering it. Limelight was patented until a couple of years ago and that wasn't allowed. Proven Winners had to get their cut. I think Erin from Floret is trying to help in this kind of plan. I just sounds like the retroactive strategy was not good.

    • @OldReddingFarm
      @OldReddingFarm  2 месяца назад +1

      Yes I agree the retroactive part is the part that gives us both the biggest "icks" I'm not familiar specifically with scoop scabiosa but If that's a flower you picked to grow, understanding and agreeing to its rules, then that's of course totally fine! But changing the rules in the middle is what seems so unfair. Plus of course where they chose to make this announcement.

    • @80660018
      @80660018 2 месяца назад +1

      They actually want royalties on cut flowers also. They want royalties on everything. If you sell then they get a cut. They also said that if you donate to a society and the society sell it for $20 and gave the donor $5 then they get the $5 instead of the donor. Instead of the donor sending them $1.15 which is 25%, they want $5 from the original sales price of $20 that the society sold it for. If the society didn't give the donor anything then they don't have to pay royalties.

    I admire what they do as far as breeding at Santa Cruz, but their whole message with this new trademarking is so ridiculous. They could have rented land and grown tubers for sales. So silly to act like they’re forced to start charging royalties instead of changing how they run their own farm to make it profitable. If you don’t have room, breed fewer varieties at once and use some space for sales, or get a freaking day job like everyone else who doesn’t make enough on their passion 😭 or at the very least do your trademarks but don’t act like your hand has been forced while you were doing such a good deed that just happened to result in almost half a million dollars in debt.
    I think it’s also gross how they make it sound like you can’t sell their tubers without a license and paying royalties. You can, you just can’t use their trademarked name. And then they say “we rely on other growers to get these out into the world” as if those growers are doing them a huge favor. Why take a 25% cut of someone’s profits if they’re doing you a favor?!

    • @OldReddingFarm
      @OldReddingFarm  Месяц назад

      Yesss!!! This is so well written and we agree with it all!! The other thing that would make it easier is to just not make it retroactive! Have this apply to new varieties only or even give people some warning a year or two to divest if that's what they want to do.

Sorry this is rough to watch, I feel like you should not be putting out a video if you have never hybridized dahlias- it literally costs so much to bring a dahlia to market - and you just don’t understand. I have been hybridizing for 8 years and still have not brought a dahlia to market- think about if I grew that acre in flowers for cut purposes and tuber production- that’s around 30,000 dollars- you don’t get it
