  • This dahlia tour includes all the Dinnerplate and the largest dahlias in bloom in my garden right now.
    I’ll show you the differences between each, comparing colour, height, and flower size, in the hope it’ll help you select the dahlia varieties that you’d like in your gardens.
    We’ve had a slow start this year due to the unprecedented heat wave and lack of rainfall, not to mention that the deer ate every single one of my young plants back in June, and consequently, they’ve had to make a supreme effort to grow back. Thank goodness nature knows how to combat pesky pests! 🤣

    Mr. Mingus lived on the corner of my best friend's street, in Vancouver, Washington. I drove by his MINGUS DAHLIA sign for 20 years and always saw him tending his Dahlias in his garden. Sadly I wasn't growing Dahlias, at that time and after his passing, the property was sold ~ Now I wish I had stopped and visited with him ~ from Seattle, Washington USA

    I've been searching RUclips for the most informative and simplistic video on growing dahlias. So glad I found yours. It is so helpful. I'm growing them for the first time in Southern United States. I can't wait until I get my first bloom. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I plan to click on each link. God bless you always.

    I love the way you used the word, 'fascination' to describe something that is unusual and unexpected, Never heard it being used like that before.

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  Год назад +2

      Hi Katin, it's actually a bona fide word, used to describe when every once in a while the normal growth pattern of a plant goes awry, producing an interesting “mistake” that can be attractive or ugly, bizarre, or humorous. 😁 I love it!

    Hi It's Bonny from Canada. This year I'm growing the Dinner Plate dahlias. Last year I grew the Pompon. I'm not one for cutting flowers from my garden to bring indoors. Can't wait for this year's dahlias.

      How exciting Bonny. I still haven't taken my dahlias out of storage but I think I'm putting it off because we have lost so may to rot this year - I've ordered some new ones too - so these are just starting to arrive and I'll be potting them up in a few days time. SOooooo exciting 😄😁

    Beautiful again. I use to live in a suburb that had a an airport nearby (about 6 kms away) and trained light aircraft pilots and had them turning around over my home every 2 minutes.lived there for well over 20 years wasn’t like that when we moved there hardly had any, then they started training and got more and more over the years. Had to move, drove me nuts.

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  Год назад +1

      Thanks you Carol. We don't actually live near an airport but there are some very small airports in the surrounding area and we do live in a 'beauty spot' of rolling hills and countryside so I guess that this is why those small planes choose to fly over - we also live near some homes with their own helipads...not helpful. I don't notice the aircraft normally but when I'm filming it is too noisy for my microphone - I may have to upgrade it! 😬🤣

    Did it take longer to get blooms from your Penhill Watermelon like mine? Yours is stunning! Thanks for the comparison! I thought Otto's thrill would be much bigger. Pictures online are filtered too much. Islander looks like a darker coral in the pictures on the internet! Something I already ordered for next Spring! LOL!

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  Год назад +1

      Hi there, I don't remember it taking longer - some just do take a bit longer than others to get going. I also do find that all the dahlias change colour through the season so internet pictures can sometimes be misleading.

    Beautiful. They are gorgeous aren't they. Penhill Watermelon stands out for me as the prettiest :) But I am always drawn to Thomas A Edison when I see it in people's garden tours. You inspire me❤. Do you disbud the side buds on your flowers?

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  11 месяцев назад

      Hi Lynn, no, I never disbud my dahlias. I think it's only important to do this if you want really big flower heads, especially if you are entering them into competitions. I find that the larger the flower head is, the more likely it will flop in the rain and/or wind, so I always deadhead really low down to avoid the flopping and just let the dahlia decide how many flowers it wants to produce 😁 Hope this helps. Annette x

    Bought the Thomas A Edison after seeing it at Wisley, and absolutely love it. I'm fairly new to dailies and have been growing them in my mixed borders. Some seem to blend better in the borders and be more floriferous with attractive foliage (eg. the Bishop and Happy Single series) but those arnt good as cut flowers. Thomas Edison seems to tick both boxes. Chat Noir has provided plenty of blooms and carried its flowerheads high, but has taken over a bit. So, growth habit is important too. So when choosing dahlias one needs to consider how you plan to use them, e.g. purely for the vase, or for garden colour. Your thoughts on this would be useful. I says you planted them together in your garden so presume you were growing for cut flowers?

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  Год назад

      Hi Laurel. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. Yes, the singles are great for the wildlife too. I love Bright Eyes because it provides a good pop of colour and seems to be just the right height for mid-border with a few blooms bouncing around in the breeze, but I don't pick it because the blooms don't last once they've been pollinated. Bright Eyes combines well with Flooring. I've found my Thomas Edison a bit too big for arrangements, but I like it for it's height and that deep colour in the border. I've made a series of videos this season, where I go through each dahlia in more detail so do take a look at those. I will certainly bear in mind, for future videos, that growth habit and their appearance in the border are important considerations, thank you. I planted all my dahlias together this year, except for the shorter ones (below 70cm), which I planted in pots. I did this so that I could easily compare them and also, because I wanted to try them out in a no-dig bed, rather than my heavy clay soil - and this was incredibly successful. I grow dahlias for both garden colour, and also for cutting - so I tend to have 3 of each variety so that I have sufficient blooms for both! 🌸💚🌸
