This story is beyond fascinating. A world of a hundred years ago that many people would never imagine could have existed. And a truly heroic protagonist. Add to this an accomplished storyteller! What a combination.
This fascinating detective story is also as great as any one man theatrical performance I have ever seen. I'm reminded of Hal Holbrook's "Mark Twain Tonight" 40 years ago. Holbrook inhabited Twain's speech and mannerism so completely that part way through his performance I'd stopped witnessing an actor's impression of the great 19th century writer and began to watch Mark Twain. This skillful rendition of Hammett's short novel is complete with the 1920s era office and sound effects from San Francisco's downtown district. This is a brilliant experience.
YOWZA !! What a treat! The whole shootin' match....The city sounds, the gritty speech-patterns, the slightly shop-worn knight in THAT HAT, and expressive, without chewing the furniture.... What a treat ! Dash would be proud.
I love the ambience of your office. That old black fan in the background has metal blades. Try to find such a thing around anymore! They were still pretty common when I was young -- I'm 76. Your videos take me back. I love them! Thank you!
@@alexcoke Yes it is from Lamplighter School. Can’t believe you found me. Are you still in Austin. We just arrived in New Orleans for the Jazz Fest. Would love to chat with you. Not sure if its safe to give you my email address or phone here on you tube. Any ideas on how to best connect?
Samuel Dashiel Hammett is my 9th cousin! For years I have enjoyed is work. When I started doing genealogy imagine my surprise to learn this. Wish my father had lived to know, he would have smiled.
Somewhere you asked for requests. How about The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett, The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler, Casablanca by Murray Burnett (I think). Any of those ring a bell for you? Then there's Mike Hammer. I'm sure I can come up with more suggestions. It's going to be a long winter. I've gone through the local libraries like a locust. I threw my TV out 20 years ago, and currently have no computer. It's just me and my smartphone here in the woods, and I'm loving your videos. You keep makin' 'em, and I'll keep watchin' 'em! And thank you!
Good reader and I like the presentation very much. It’s amazing that people could be so cavalier about civil rights and the use of ethnic slurs. I remember when police were no longer allowed to use the “third degree” and could no longer beat suspects with a rubber hose or telephone book (so there wasn’t the evidence of bleeding). People would, then, say that would make it impossible to catch criminals. Another outcry when the Miranda warning was instigated. And, yet, we still catch criminals. People still use ethnic slurs but not with the casualness exhibited in this story or in my youth. Bad as things can be today, we’ve plugged up a couple of holes in civic behavior.
@@evanmercer9997 You read beautifully. I read to my wife every night, and I enjoy doing it. But your skill and fluency is far beyond mine, and your voice is splendid. I've only learned to read one word ahead, you seem to read three or four words ahead. Impressive.
Very well done! I’m not sure why there aren’t more comments, but I guess great oaks from little acorns grow... I WAS wondering if the traffic noise was normal ambiance or whether it’s part of a finely crafted sound track.
Thank you very much. This is the second of these videos I've made. The traffic noise is a sound track I created after a suggestion for my first video in this series, "Too Many Have Lived by Dashiell Hammett". ruclips.net/video/sbzwN-qYpVI/видео.html
What a great narrator; did you get your training with NBC? I've read Hammett, Chandler and Cain 10 times over, but listening to you makes a new story. Please send more, and hoping for your good health...Patricia
Thanks for another outstanding performance!
A great story. Great storytelling as well. Thank you!
Good Lord! That was well done!
The last sentence - unbelievable! 😳🤯 Hammett knew how to WRITE! Thanks for this.
Love this audiobook with the narrator onscreen! And in persona!

Thank you. I really enjoy it
Enthralling and mesmerizing performance. I’m right back in the mid 1920s pouring over “Black Mask.”

Very nice performance. Small point: the word _row,_ meaning an argument or fight, rhymes with "cow."
Thank you for listening so closely. 😊

I think it would be better if you turned down the traffic noises a little. I like the background sounds, just too loud.
😊👍
Great telling, good sound quality... but WHY these irritating background noises? Very distracting :-(
The traffic noises detract from the narration rather than enhancing it.
Agreed
💙📚🎙💙
Why is there only audio in the left air?
The traffic effect is soooooo distracting....WHY??!!
However Contra Costa is pronounced in Spanish, locally it isn’t pronounced the way he reads it.
