I like it doesn't just reference canon but has set so much up. We've seen the moment the Frengi agreed to sign up the federation, the return of characters, the expansion on the lore of Orions. Its done more for fleshing out established Star Trek then some past series. Like, the great thing about this series is it is a peek behind the curtains at Starfleets supporting ships and their roles, which gave us the path to seeing expansion on existing races. This is important as most Star Trek species are like "today we're going to planet..." and thats it, U never see them again. We've even had the Pakleds expanded upon and had a glimpse on how a race thats simple can actually be a threat in the long game. The people who knock it, do so because they just don't want to like it anyway. And its not like we didn't have humour in the past... The famous "I know this ship like the back of my hand..." comment followed by a knocked out Scotty is the best example, but theres also things like him saying not knowing how to use a computer in the 20th century and walking up to going "computer..." then picking up a mouse and speaking into that like a mic before he finally has a keyboard handed to him and he realises how to interact with 20th century tech. Or Picard drawing face in a cloud, Captains Day with Riker mocking Picard's tiny little doll... The baseball episode of DS9... Its always been there this sense of humour because it lets the audience know that while there is a element of seriousness to the series, the people are professional, they are still human beings. For every moment where someone phases through and dies in the floor, theres a moment with a hologram of Kia with Quark's face.

I like that it adds to the lore since not a lot of non-human species have a lot of variety in their looks like different races/ethnicities within the species. They basically all look the same with very little, if any variation, to their looks or culture. Makes them feel less fleshed out.
Best part; we now can accept there are Blue skinned Orions who mispronounce their own species name , meaning the lore on Orions just got expanded again.

A continuity error is not a _plot hole._ Blue skin or green skin, the pronunciation of Oreos or Orions, neither of these affect the plots in the slightest.
It's not even a continuity error. Only English pronounces "Orion" like "o-ryan." Every other language it's "ore-eon", Spanish, Greek, Romanian, they all pronounce it the same way. The director of that TAS episode just happened to be an immigrant. If anything this just shows how unworldly the vid-maker is.
Part of the problem was the animated series wasn't fact checked and the voice actors didn't know how to pronounce words. It was slapped together cheaply and sort of in a hurry to fill avoid. Nah, it's because they're technically no longer lower decks. They're all lieutenants now. They get their own quarters. They will need to fill that fun gap badly though.
Personally, I would have gone with 'Oryons' being the males and are blue, while 'Orions' are the women and are green. But the gendering of other languages are a mystery to most Americans, so it probably wouldn't have flown.
Lower decks respects canon so much that they go out of their way to fix the problems of the past
Yet some people think it deliberately insults it.

One of the things I love about Lower Decks is how they poke fun at Star Trek history, while never forgetting they ARE a Star Trek show lol

One more good reason to keep lower decks alive.
This is what makes "Lower Decks" the efin' best of all Star Treks.
Lower decks continues to address and fix the dumb choices that were mentioned once and then brushed away because they had no way to explain it

I hope they renew Lower Decks instead of ending it
50 years 1 month and 17 days to fix... in the industry this one is called a quick fix 🤣
Lower Decks is the most intensely Trek of any Trek incarnation, and that includes TOS.
Hell yeah! well put together

@@dataportdoll Well, it's an English-speaking series, and it's pronounced two different ways in TOS and TAS, so, yah, it's discontinuous.

there are green Oreos, the mint ones, hence Oreons, which is the favored food on Orion

That is actually a pretty clever idea. I like it.
Green Orion males have already shown up in Trek canon, mostly on Enterprise. You'd just be adding another plot hole.
