    This is a full tutorial on how to make yourself a high voltage electric plasma arc lighter using a simple circuit and a flyback transformer that you'll also learn how to build. Be careful wit high voltage, it could injure you. The video is quite long because I wanted to explain all the theory behing the circuit, flyback transformer and the inducter properties in this high voltage converter. I hope you'll enjoy the entire video.

    I couldn't be anymore noob to electronics than I already am and this video doesn't seem to leave anything out. You appear to explain EVERYTHING and not take any assumptions that anyone watching this might already know this or that. That's awesome for people like me who have very very little knowledge of electronic components and how they work together. I'm subscribed and will be watching other videos to learn more. Thank you so much for all the teaching you give to those like me, just learning.

    I've built a similar project, a plasma speaker, which also uses a Mosfet to power the flyback transformer. Without any heatsink, the Mosfet would desolder itself after less than a minute ;)

    mine has now stopped working and I found out that the transistor broke. Then, when I replaced the transistor, the replacement broke immediately without any plasma. The resistance and diode and 3.7V battery seem to look good, so does this mean its an issue with the transformer? Any feedback would be appreciated! Very lost at the moment

      Bit late but the transistor sort of gets "tortured" cause it overheats and has to widstand the back electro magnetic force of the coil cause thats how inductors behave there is not much to do its a super simple circuit

    well, i know that this circuits works. but i have no idea where is this trick, its almost impossible to get it to fit on the ferrite, its always be some millimeters thick than the core, its frustrainting, and when i try to reduce the tape, it arc inside the transformer. -_-

    Help me if you can!
    I'm doing a similar project! And when assembling the secondary coil, I got 8 layers of 300 turns (1600 turns in total). After soldering the secondary coil wires, I tested the continuity and the multimeter beeped and showed low resistance. I went to solder a wire in the terminal and ended up getting very hot, after soldering, I tested the continuity on the multimeter and nothing to beep, except for showing me a resistance of 500 ohm. I changed the solder and nothing. I measured the secondary coil wire separately and continued to 500 ohms.
    Could it be that when I went to weld I ended up increasing the temperature of the coil wires and thus increasing the resistance? My welding machine is 60 watts!
    Is it okay for me to use this secondary coil to generate high electrical voltage?
    It was a lot of work, I wouldn't want to re-do the coil :(
    Thanks in advance, your videos are very explanatory and are helping me a lot!
    Congratulations on the channel!

    If you try to measure resistance of the HV secondary it shows OL - i.e. discontinuity. Why??? On your figure there is no break between the ends of the HV secondary coil.

    pretty bad ass. but I do have few questions. why create a flayback transformer for this? cant you do it with just a primary and secondary, the only reason I ask, is that I took apart an arc lighter and the 1st one I did was a primary with the secondary but it was connected to the primary, with that note the two prongs that made the arc was not attached to any wires but had some sort of metallic hard glue that was attached to the sides of the transformer, why is this? I have pictures of them all.second lighter had a x-plasma arc two transformers, but has no secondary windings just primary with the prongs once again glued to the side of the ferrite core, I am trying to understand all this and have been looking everywhere with no results.okay looking at the circuit board I see a LHT7 5 pin li-po batt charger and there was an un-identifiable 8 pin chip .Now I do believe that the un-identifiable chip is also a battery charger as well, do to the nature of the circuit protection for the battery could you see a reason for this having two chargers onboard? then I noticed the SMD (Surface Mount Device for those that are new) IC/ Transistor which I found they used MJD3055. if I could attach pictures I definitely would that way I can show you what exactly I am taking about.

    7:00 wrong, initial current via coil L1 will be: I=(V - Vd1forward)/R1 = (V-0.7V)/R1 for some silicon diode of simple type as 1N4007
    for I=0 you need to reconnect R1 to V+ not to Gnd , step up buck-boost converter(wikipedia describes) is some tricky concept

    Wouldn't krypton tape been a better choice to protect shorts in coil? Also, wouldn't Shellac been a better choice in sealing the copper winding's and to help in short circuit? Would a micro (JOULE THIEF) work better for this circuit placed after the transistor to help keep the transistor cooler? Also you should have used (Tungsten Carbide Tig electrodes for the ark post don't you think? I like what your doing mate. These hands on projects are awesome to me anyway. Thank you for showing me and the whole world your skills. Your video's are top notch. I've learned from you. Thank you.

    I tried winding my own coil from a SMPS transformer as well as rewinding the primary of a HV display transformer like the one in the video. I can't get my primary to oscillate for some reason. It works perfectly fine when I use it to run a Tube TV flyback but not with any of my hand made transformers. I didn't include that diode on the gate though because i;ve seen it omitted elsewhere and it works driving the flyback without the diode. Maybe ill try including it..

      Your k1377 might work. If you check the data sheet the drain current is just 5A in your case and maybe that is too low. The irfz44 has 50A drain current. I recommend you to buy that one. But any way you should try the k1377 as well ans see the results. Always check the datasheets of the components if someting goes wrong. Keep up and thanks for your com!

    • @blg53

      Because of the high frequency of the oscillations the core must non-conductive (eg ferrite ceramic). If you use metal core the eddy currents will be induced in it draining all the energy into heat and nothing will get to the output. But the transformer will become hot!

    Is it possible, using mosfet 50N06? Because in your video, 50N, not 50N06?

      Yes, make sure the MOSFETs can handle the power. For lower losses use a MOSFET with a low RDS value (preferably

      ELECTRONOOBS thanks for the quick response, can you tell me i I can use a tip32 transistor, I got a bunch laying around

    • @ELECTRONOOBS
      @ELECTRONOOBS  7 лет назад

      tip 32 is a PNP for what I know. As you can see in the description I gibve NPN schematic as well but using a NPN connected with the emitter to GND. You should change the schematic in order to work but I recommend you to try with a NPN tip31 at least.

    • @danyCD17
      @danyCD17 7 лет назад

      ELECTRONOOBS it's NPN, I hope it works, I meant tip 31

    • @danyCD17

      I tried it with the tip 31 transistor, it works, but the arc is very small, it looks like a spark, how can i increase it?

      Just read the description, thanks for the video, I`ll be making one myself. A little different though, probably with 2 transformers, because I don`t want it to be thick.

    Hey bro which transistor you used can I use 13002s transistor?

    • @ELECTRONOOBS
      @ELECTRONOOBS  7 лет назад

      I've used the N50 347. You can't use 13002. You need more current

    • @madarauchiha1174
      @madarauchiha1174 7 лет назад

      Electronoobs not even 13003?

    • @ELECTRONOOBS
      @ELECTRONOOBS  7 лет назад

      You should test it out. It has a current range up to 1.5A and it's for fast swithching. It might work but it could get very hot since it doesn't have heat sink. I'm not sure if it will work, you should try...

    amigo necesito tu ayuda tengo una duda: yo podria tener todo este circuito del arco electrico controlado por un arduino nano? tu sabes... para poder encenderlo y apagarlo a voluntad con un control remoto si resuelvo esto ya podria hacer un sistema de proyectiles para mi tanque casero

    • @ELECTRONOOBS
      @ELECTRONOOBS  7 лет назад +1

      Para proyectiles recomiendo mejor usar un simple cable de nichromo. Con 5 voltios se quema al instante y puedes encender cosas. SI solo quieres la chispa con este circuito, siempre puedes usar un rele o transistor irfz44n controlados por un Arduino para encender y apagar el circuito. saludos

    • @BYRONSLAM09
      @BYRONSLAM09 7 лет назад

      hola de nuevo no quiero parecer muy insistente o molesto pero no me quedo muy claro esto del relee o del transistor irfz44n, busque algo de informacion sobre este ultimo pero nada relacionado con aplicaciones para arduino y menos para conseguir un arco/chispa electrica, lo unico que deseo es hacer con arduino un ignidor pirotecnico a control remoto nada mas, es posible entonces hacer esto? donde podria encontrar informacion sobre como hacer esto? te agradesco las respuestas saludos

    • @ELECTRONOOBS
      @ELECTRONOOBS  7 лет назад +1

      BYRONSLAM09 no, el circuito de chispa es el mismo. Lo que yo he dicho es en vez de usar un botón para activar la chispa, usar un relé controlado por Arduino. El rele es muy fácil de usar, es un botón controlado por voltaje, normalmente 0 es apagado y 5 encendido. Si no quieres construir el circuito este para la chispa, en eBay si buscas arc voltage module o algo así podrás comprarlo por unos 2 dólares. Saludos.
