      This video was from like 3 years ago, so I have learned to stop and smell the coffee along the way if you will. It's even harder for me as a content creator, because I am vlogging my experience on top of hiking it and enjoying it. But I think I have found a good healthy balance. @@RVAHikerGirl I lifted this from The Roanoke Times 10/9/2011: "named for James McAfee, a Scots-Irish immigrant who settled on several hundred acres in the Catawba Valley, at the northern base of what is now known as McAfee Knob, about 1748. That’s way early for these parts, and some seven years before the tiny frontier settlement know as Drapers Meadow on the modern-day Virginia Tech campus was attacked by Indians, in what history has called “the Drapers Meadow Massacre.”
      According to “The History of Roanoke County” by George Jack and Edward Boyle Jacobs, a bullet-pocked house made of logs and stone, with a wide hearth inside, stood on the old McAfee home site for many years - a testament to the rugged life of the Virginia frontier in the early days."
      His wife Jane left him behind in 1779 to go with her sons to their newly acquired land in Kentucky. James, born in 1707, died in 1785.

      RVA Hiker Girl it is a nice hike. Generally easier than what you just did, but a couple of old(er) guys with 45 lbs on their backs??? We had a blast. Camped on the Creeper stream at a bit short of 10 miles. Jim, my buddy wanted to start from Damascus, instead of starting at White Top Station. That would have been hiking down, instead of up. Lots of laughs, and sore muscles. You should cruise thru it. I’ve hiked the world at the ends of trips, but in nature, nothing like it. Wish I’d started as a kid, instead of an old(r) kid.🤔😀. Have doing a lot of the local James hikes. Awesome 😎

      Hi there! Thanks for the sub. This is like around 8 miles with 1,800+ feet in elevation. I didn't eat enough so I bonked on this one and heat zapped my energy. Cole Mountain on the AT is also a great hike, easier and shorter than this one. False Cape State Park is a great backpacking trip and you can sleep on the beach if you want or more inland. I have a video on that one if you would like to take a look at that one. Lots of great backpacking on the Appalachian Trail. Take a look at my Virginia series. Hey, I would like your opinion since you have done both. My friend and I hiked Loudon heights from Harpers Ferry and had a blast but, she said that was the absolute limit of her hiking ability to to finish Loudon. Do you think we could do this or would it be too much? The stats seem similar for elevation and mileage. What do you think?

    • @RVAHikerGirl
      @RVAHikerGirl  Год назад +1

      I thought that section was pretty easy to Harpers Ferry, but this hike to McAfee I think is harder. But there is another way, than just going the AT the whole way. You can take the fire road up and back. It splits off from the AT, you'll see the signs for it. It's so worth the trek up there. It's definitely a whole lot busier as well. I think your friend can do it. Take lots of breaks and snacks as they need to. It's down all the way back, so much easier out. I hope that helps. ~RVA~

    • @RVAHikerGirl
      @RVAHikerGirl  3 года назад +1

      No I think you should and here is why. Fall like temps are going to feel great out there. You're not going to get over heated. You can take your time. It's not all up hill. There are flat sections in between. And there is the fireroad as an alternate easier route if you feel like taking that up and down instead of the AT. And you will feel so accomplished once you get up there and see that view. Slow and steady wins the race. We are our own biggest obstacle. One step at a time we can all walk. I am sending you encouragement through this screen. Do it and it doesn't matter how long it takes, cuz I promise these views are gonna so be worth it. Take plenty of water and snacks to fuel yourself. Send me a message tomorrow and tell me how it was. I will be on the AT myself, just further north. Well the only hiking place I've been is Laurel Falls in Hampton TN. It's beautiful but it's not far from the main road. Some of my daughters friends took us there and I remembered the way back to the Falls

      If you check out the description of the video it has all the details of this but 8.4 miles from the parking lot to the summit and back. Hope that helps!

      This was an older video of mine, sound and video quality is much better now 3 years later on my more recent videos. But you can turn the volume up on the video itself on the screen, that may help.
