The quick camera shot through that extra sound hole in the upper bout reveals what appears to be at least 1 brace against the guitar's top that has a thin strip of ebony sandwiched between the spruce bracing ( if it's spruce bracing. ) Thin ebony strips sandwiched between the x-bracing underneath the guitar's top is also used in some of Takamine's true custom shop guitars that are also hand voiced & produced only by their top 2 master luthiers. ( But they probably cost more than the Avenir line that has these features. The Takamine I saw with this rare bracing costs around $12,000. ) So far, this Avenir is the only other guitar that appears to have the same method used. The thin strip of ebony sandwiched between the top bracing supposedly gives more rigidity, thus allowing the master luthier to scallop the bracing even thinner, which allows the top to vibrate even more IN ADDITION TO further enhancing the tone of the instrument. Amazing stuff !!!! I wonder which master luthier first invented this technique???

That is one fine guitar! Great review! I would buy one, however I'll stick with my Boucher!

Lovely sound. Re capos? Any reason why eg a Shubb version designed for 12 string/classical wouldn't work well?

It sounds wonderful. I'd love to play one. Thank you for the review, this adds to my understanding of acoustic instruments. As to the question of who writes your scripts, maybe if you provided coffee to your vast writing staff they would come up with comedy gold.

I have actually played the same guitar and it is just an amazing guitar regardless of price. I thought the fanned frets might be an issue but it played so naturally that I now think it is a great feature. I ended up “settling” for a Bridgeport guitar due to monetary considerations otherwise I would have bought it in a heartbeat.

Wow that's um definitely very different if never seen nothing like that before I would have a lot of string buzz I would imagine cause of the frets being in the wrong place it would take some getting use to I noticed the nut and saddle are angled to yes very different .

Great review, very interesting, beautiful design . . . amazing clean sound, but to my ear . . . too loud, especially the low E, but that would favour finger style. Cheers.

I am sure you have seen that Yamaha has a new guitar FG9,Expensive ,i think to compete with all the Bluegrass guitars out there.I hope you get a chance to review one and give us your thoughts compared to FGX5.

John I’m so glad Taylor‘s are overrated. I got a 514 CE and it sucks paid $3000 for it for the breeze love solid wood Auditorium and it blows the Taylor away so I have to say tailors are junk

So … your mom didn’t tell you about saying nothing if you’ve nothing good to say. Bob Taylor and Andy Powers are doing so much for our community daily. From sustainable forests to imaginative new bracing and tone woods. To getting reasonably priced and beautifully voiced mini guitars into the hands of new and old players. To developing high quality factory techniques. Bob generously worked with Chris Martin IV to help him set up his computer systems. And, not to be overlooked, the company is now owned by its employees, in both America and Mexico. To end, I have a spruce/maple Grand Auditorium, a 614ce Builders Edition, that is an absolute gem, not junk, and don’t think anyone would disagree if they had an open mind and a couple open ears.
