I laughed when the pipe length part came on, because it is so true. I am planning a new electricity plant, after watching Sandy we started to look hard at how we could do our boreholes, and thanks to Sandyfying our mindset we saved 60 kilometres of drilling boreholes.
Yeah, every kilometer became 20 percent more expensive, but the savings and efficiency uptake took that back with a vengeance.
Now I have a new Sandyism to spread around. "Don't save me any money, I can't afford it." Gold...

Sandy's way of looking at things and his team with just a few videos helped you to make that happen. Imagine how much more you could do if were around them for a 3 day workshop. What I am impressed with is that you were willing to Sandyfy your thinking and take a SECOND LOOK. My first ideas are usually not the best and doing things how they have always been done without asking why is DANGEROUS. The value you gave your company due to this channel is immense and I hope you look at every project as if you had Sandy and Team over your shoulder.

And yet, the Hyundai Kona is one of the most energy-efficient EVs out there, with owners easily getting upwards of 5.5 miles/kWh without really trying, and as much as 7.5 if they do. Even on my daily commute I'd often see 6+ miles/kWh. They must be doing something right.

I was there, I can tell you much more about the photos and stuff. The big building inside the factory you show at the start, is the stamping press that makes all the panels for the top of the car, before they are welded together. All the factory workers stood by the lines and you could ask the, anything. They know what every robot, handle or thing did, it was so interesting and so great to be able to get all this knowledge.Only the new colors was a secret, but they hide some cars with the new colors in the factory. I watched an interview recently with JB Strudel and he remarked, when they released the Model S in 2012, it was widely acclaimed as the best car made, and they thought they would have to go as fast as they could and try and carve out a niche as all the ICE manufacturers would start producing EV’s. He added, they were astonished that nothing happen!! I have zero empathy for them, their Boards, Management and ultimately shareholders were asleep at the wheel, content in taking fat cheques…hubris is an amazing thing and they will pay a very very large price as their road to be competitive is at least a decade behind and that’s assuming Telsa does nothing from this day forth

It also means that battery pack replacement/repairs is orders of magnitude more complex than it was before! If Tesla cannot pass the cost-savings down to the consumers in MUCH lower prices, the legacy effect of the "structural" battery will mean many cars being scrapped as economically impractical to repair and that flies directly in the face of what they say they aim for!

It is even more important to get bean counters to get off the short term economies and the CEOs chosen for their direction to the future. Costs are inevitable but productive future profit requires vision change at all levels. I have heard Sandy mention past suggestions that were inline with Tesla but failed to get implemented both while working for companies and in recommendations after analysing products. When companies get to the top, they stop, they fall back on cheap profits, glitzy ads and telling people they are number one. Tesla is innovating but mostly it is listening, thinking and doing. Tesla is not concerned about who got the idea first but whether it fits to what is needed now. And more importantly, it is a team effort from top to bottom. When they lose that they will begin to fall behind.

    • @dr-k1667
      @dr-k1667 2 года назад +4

True, but what we also need even more are people willing to ACT and LISTEN to guys like Sandy who are working at these companies TODAY. Sandy worked at Ford for a few decades, made his way up and they let him LEAVE. How many other Sandy's are looking at the Exit today? Everyone that works at Munroe is a mini Sandy and they either got fired or left before they would be let go from other companies because management was so "smart" and they didn't fit. THAT is the BIGGEST ISSUE. Those people leave and go work at Tesla or do their own thing like Sandy.

GM is betting the farm on the Ultium platform. ~1800 lyrics is a joke. startups handle more volume than that. Good thing they took their Corvette engineers and put them all on Ultium. If Ultium fails it’s curtains for GM. We must be better than the Chinese or it will be history repeating itself. Toyota’s arrogance is astonishing. They wanna be experts in manufacturing, and their factories are showing that instead of fixing one factory standard mold, they are willing to iterate their factory design. That means they will identify the unforeseen problems with these new facilities as they ramp up, and their next one will be even better, rinse and repeat and you end up with the best manufacture capability in the market.

Sandy's point about reduction of parts (consolidation) and efficiency is spot on. This is why a PC costs 1/10th what it did when it first came out. Far fewer parts - modularity (which has an expense) ONLY when it can be justified. And therein lies the second lesson - first order decisions vs full order decisions. Remember when wheel bearings were pressed into a casting? Then the whole bearing and casting became one orderable part - there is an analysis of the efficency of that, the assembly cost, repair cost, inventory cost etc etc. The full burdend costs. Not just is the bearing less esxpensive.

And exactly like happens when you are a rockstar with a band, the monitor did not work properly and did not show what the audience was seeing. And then there were screams and lovecalls and requests from the public. Even a lady asked whether her son could apply while still in school. I can't imagine stuff like that happening in the USA. Anyway, these are the things that real rockstars experience all the time. It was funny to see that.

The school system in Germany is such that kids get to go to a technical school real early. They can start an apprenticeship at 16 according to the kid's vocation, if I'm not mistaken. Companies like BMW offer apprenticeships and they hire them after their apprenticeship. The whole system is efficient and I wish more countries were more invested in helping the kids figure out their professional lives long before they hit 16 years of age, instead of wasting the children's time with general knowledge classes and a mostly useless curriculum.

Mounting the seats on the battery is such a brilliant idea. You now have a MASSIVE hole in the floor to install the dash, rear seats, etc. I bet the driver and passenger seats are pre-wired with the carpet rolled up underneath. After the battery install, just plug in the wire harness and cut the ties holding the carpet back.

I'm an engineer myself and worked for a while in the automotive industry, and have had many arguments about saving money no matter what the cost, There are 2 very different cases that come to mind, one was where a $17 plastic moulding was placed over the inlet manifold to make it look pretty under the bonnet, but they didn't have 20c to fix decal in the dash that looked woeful, and the other was awarding a contract to supplier 'A' over supplier 'B' for a price reduction of 50c resulting in a 80,000 vehicle recall. And yes, the cost reduction itself was directly linked to the reason for the recall. That's why I like these guys, because it's all about the quality of the end result and yes, being minimalist but not for minimisation's sake.

Thank you both for the deep analysis. From what I also see in the factory tour from Wolf Pack (2 Parts each ~45min) I can say: Berlin/Grünheide will rock. There must be a reason for BMW to pay NABU (one of the "greens") for delay Tesla. Follow the money.
VW is also struggling with software and a good product also with production time.
Tesla is creating a new generation of maschines that build the maschines. The vertical intergration is also a point, where legacy car makers are in trouble. Tesla is far forward.
The GIGA Castings are a new way and I want to underline tripple Sandys words: If you need to replace the castings, total the car and be happy you still can do that and walk away to buy the next Tesla.
I was sitting in a Dacia Spring (germany, also named K-ZE). It was smelling for cheapest (not only cheap) plastic. The steel plates are thin enough to deform with my fingers, the front under the hood was nearly empty (much space for a real frunk) but for safety....after I saw it, I understand why they limit to 130km/h. At this speed you will be dead in case of a crash. Ok, this Dacia costs ~15-20k € but I'm still looking forward for my Model Y Performance build in Grünheide. Yes, for a 3x price but much more infotainment, updates, handling, feeling, much more car, fun and most important: safety.
I drove also the KIA e-Niro, the Hyundai Kona (also the Ioniq) and some other cars, no one can compare and compete with Tesla. In the Hundai and Kia I felt like sitting in my Opel Astra 2006. Old but stable. If I compare costs, safings, comfort, infotainment and all factors around my normal day job mobility, I can not buy any other car than a Model Y...and as a german, I can't buy any german car with a clean conscience. For the future, for my life and for my son.

I will switch to Tesla as soon I can and as soon it make sense :)
Give Tesla the time to start with Grünheide, there will be enough cars to have one in my hands until my ICE lease expires, but I actually don't have the money to pay 2 cars. Getting out of the lease can work, but with Renault it is a way you don't want go if you not need.

Indeed, I was thinking today about the legacy automakers and their chip shortage blues, and it dawned on me that their problem is probably that their electronics designs are old, with some of the parts already hard to source due to their march to obsolescence, even before there was a chip shortage. New parts are easier to get than old ones, always.
I worked as an electronics design engineer for a design+mfg services company for about 20 years; and had a stupid, apathetic, cheap and lazy boss that always said "if it ain't broke don't fix it", and so our designs grew 15 or 20 years old, and would only update them when a part could not be obtained anymore. Bad way to work; all designs should be updated yearly. If you wait until some part cannot be sourced at all, by then 20 other parts are also very hard to obtain. And if a shortage happens when your designs are old, you're in deep trouble. Not the first time; I remember a shortage in electronics back in the 90's; it was brutal. We had to redesign a number of products to use the new then and easier to get Microchip controllers, instead of Motorola's.
Plus, if you wait so long to update electronic designs, by the time you try to, the engineer that worked on it originally is probably gone, and then you are wondering what many of the parts are for, not to speak of trying to understand somebody else's firmware code ...
Compounding the problem, I'm sure most legacy autos contracted out the design and manufacturing of their electronics. If the design was in-house, and the electronic assembly was in-house, and the electrical engineers that designed the boards were their own engineers, and the programmers of the chips were their own programmers, they would be able to move fast, like Tesla did, redesigning multiple versions of each circuit board to accommodate different parts, and then work 24 hours coding updated firmwares on a diet of coffee and pizza ... But if you contract out the design and manufacturing, you can call your supplier until you are blue in the face and you won't get them to do miracles for you. They got too many clients with life or death needs to service, and you'll just have to wait in line.
Arugula is my favorite green. With avocado. What's wrong with it?
It's not Boston Scientific; it's Boston Dynamics; and their dance videos use a lot of editing; and the movements are programmed as much as the drawing. The awesome thing is the video production.
Don't even think they have "swing AI".
They can't even hear the music, in the first place.
Some day yes; but not yet.

    • @privateerburrows
      @privateerburrows 2 года назад

@@robrider838 Exactly! Every time a library in use gets updated it should trigger a rebuild and test.
By the way, I saw another video today about the chip shortage; I forget now what channel or title; possibly Asianometry, not sure; that raised another contributing factor:
When the pandemic first hit, there was an immediate dip in car orders, and most automakers suspended parts ordering, including semi's. At the same time there was a surge of demand for semi's by the home electronics sector. So the fabs just retooled for the home appliance needs. When the automakers tried to order parts again they got the "sorry, you're S.O.L."
Had they been in posession of any brains they wouldn't have slowed their chips ordering; they would have kept ordering and built a chip reserve; but they believe in 'just in time' like a religion.
Then there was the Renesas fab fire in Japan.

I spent 30+ years as a very little guy (sub $1M gross) in the chocolate candy industry routinely outperforming all comers with inputs being the same. It was attention to detail more than anything that made my products (and services) noticeably superior time and time again. Problem was it wouldn't scale very well where actually my business model likely would have broke somewhere not far past $1M. I really enjoy watching the Tesla (and SpaceX) manufacturing genius pull off big manufacturing scaling AND big increases in quality. Thanks Monro for all the insider insights! Really looking forward your episode of prognostications on the auto industry players future....
