- In 2013, 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed while hanging out with her volleyball team in a Chicago park. A gang member had mistook her as a rival. As an active community member who had also participated in events for Barack Obama’s second inauguration, Hadiya quickly became a symbol of the bitter cost of gun violence.
In this installment of We Are Witnesses: Chicago, Hadiya’s parents Cleopatra and Nate talk about what it’s like to survive a tragedy and the difficult ties between forgiveness and retribution. “Who’s gonna tell me how to feel when I’m visiting a cemetery,” Cleopatra told The Marshall Project. “Until you walk a day in my shoes, you can’t tell me anything.”
The parents founded Hadiya’s Promise, an organization that advocates for solutions to gun violence.

What a beautiful family. I'll never forget that gut wrenching scream her mouth let out as they were lowering her casket down. Her little brother with tears running down his face 😩. I'll never forget her story & family 💔. I sincerely wish them all the best 💞🙏🏼
I remember this case like yesterday. Such a beautiful child. She would be 23 now, probably out of college and into the working world making a life for herself. Big hugs to two wonderful parents who didn't deserve this.
Just sad this kinda violence towards one another gotta stop
Sleep well beautiful angel.
My deepest sympathy and condoleances to the family.
This is why i say life isnt fair why did a 15year old have to die in that way unreal
Thank you for sharing mom. My sincerest condolences. I can't say I understand how you feel, but it makes me aware of how my mom felt when my sister died. I see you, Mike Browns mom, how strong & honest you are with your feelings. Grieve as long as it takes, as much time as you need. God bless you and your family!
What about the dad? He's hurt too.
She was so beautiful....her parents are beautiful ....what do I expect
Absolutely agree
Thank you for putting this out here. I am sincerely sorry for your loss. I am at a loss of words because I cannot fathom, understand, and I am too scared to even try to imagine your pain. May God comfort you and continue to strengthen your family. I agree with your final statement.
RIP HADIYA ♥️❤️
RIP beautiful.💜💜💜💜
So sad i wish MOP could reach out to the mom. She deserves a sit down at the round table to stop the violence as well. Anyone who's lost their child due to gun violence has a right to voice their opinion and their hurt. Prayers to all the families.
God bless her soul. Rest easy sweet Angel. She could have accomplished so much, but her life was cut short. 🙏
Awww :( Rest In Peace beautiful angel
As much as people hate to admit it the parole board saves a lot of lives more than we can even imagine….it’s hard when a few good guys get caught in the bunch but you gotta understand these people think about these statistics
GOD BLESS THE PENDLETON FAMILY
This baby is so pretty
😭💔
💔💔🙏🏾🙏🏾
😢
Unless she’s defending her son for what he did I don’t think they should have any ill will towards the killers mother. It’s not her fault. He was a grown ass man. They should understand that. Imagine having a killer for a child.
Yeah that’s pain enough. Trust that woman lost her son a long time ago. It’s over for him his dreams gone too if he even had any
Yeah, but his parents can visit him whenever and talk to him. They'll never be able to do that with their daughter.
I agree. I hate when people say parents should be arrested for their kid's crime when the parents didn't commit them.
I think the doctors could have saved her but chose not too.
