minimme right? The DS, GBA and PSP versions of NFS all varied wildly in quality between platforms. PSP Carbon +Underground were great, Most Wanted was worst on PSP and best on GBA, and the later games were so different between PSP and DS that there’s really no direct comparison. It’s wild, and something I’m kind of sad we won’t see again now that handhelds are focused on just being portable consoles a la Switch
@@Purianite it's... basically the same level of garbage but at least they tried on the DS. if midnight club 3 can run basically full fledged on PSP, there's no excuse for Most Wanted being so halfassed.
I’d say the DS version is much worse, the PSP version may not be ambitious but it’s substantially more playable. The DS version, they didn’t try, it’s like racing on ice. Carbon was much better on the DS. Pretty cool that the PSP Carbon is even open world.
I remember getting this as a child and being incredibly disappointed by the graphics and slidey physics compared to NFS HP2... I put it down after crashing into a wall I thought was an oncoming road lol.
I can see that complaint for sure. It's not as much of an issue on an emulator but it did happen from time to time. That said though man, for a GBA... not bad.
I realized this after! upon rewatching Raycevick's NFS Most Wanted video, some of them are pulled from Hot Pursuit 2. i think this trend continued into the DS era, ProStreet seems to have similar situations with its tracks where the drag portions are just straightaway parts of circuit tracks.
I used to play this a ton on a tiny game boy micro years back. Was genuinely alot of fun. Didn't take long at all to fire up and get into a race if you only had 5 mins either, definitely appreciated that in a portable game.
I got the game recently and I can assure you that the game *does not* have rubber-banding. If you make a mistake that takes a lot of time to recover from (especially in late game), the AI simply catches up to you by playing normally. I mean, whenever I unlocked new cars and bought the most expensive one, I usually breezed through the races and left the opponents up to half a lap behind (on 2 & 3 lap circuits) - even without performance upgrades. XD Everything else you mentioned sounds spot on. Great video, informative and well-presented.
The graphics/gameplay of this remind me of the mobile version of NFS Carbon from a decade or more ago back when I played through it, of which to this date is the only mobile/portable version of an NFS game I have, given I prefer playing them on console/Xbox anyway 😛 Also the main speedometer of this game, looks an awful lot like one from NFSU1 or 2! 🤔 I may have to source/invest in getting these games for myself, as I have a Nintendo DS Lite which I only have two games for D: and while I never owned a Gameboy Advance, I do infact have the GameCube Gameboy Player which can play Gameboy, Colour & Advance games on the 'bigscreen' that way! 😊 Thank you for the time & effort you've put into making these videos, been enjoying some of them already and glad to have discovered your channel too! 👍🙌
So I had this as a kid and porche unleashed. I also had MW 2005 on PS2 and remember being distinctly disappointed at the GBA offering. I recently found my GBA SP the this being one of two remaining games (I must have sold the rest at some point). Still had a save file I had and one my sister had made. Weirdly enough, I think I enjoyed Porche Unleashed better. For GBA racing though, Crash Nitro kart takes the cake as my fav of the genre. Never had MK Circuit. THG2 and Minish Cap sitting head to head for my all time fav on the console. For those wondering, the other title I still happened to have was Spyro Season of Flame.
I know this is old, but a fun tip for this game that didn't get mentioned is that you can press select to go into first person/bumper view, which not only makes it a bit easier to see corners, but also improves framerate a bit, and also seems to improve handling(?) Feels like a different game with this mode on.

"anyone playing this game today will use an emulator" *looks at my 2 cib copies of this game*
Underground 2 for GBA was the best NFS game for that console! It had more content, cars, customization features and game modes compared to previous and later releases, tracks actually had interesting and distinct visuals (there's even one track that has a stadium which is something you'd expect to have in most wanted) Considering Pocketeers was working on Underground 2 for DS and Most Wanted for GBA AT THE SAME TIME, it's incredible what they were able to accomplish.
This was probably the first game I ever played. Fast forward to 2018 I finally played it through and beat it. The handbrake makes it so fun, never realized there was manual transmission mode though.
I rebuilt my GBA a year back and this was one of the first games i stuck into it. I don't know why, because i'm not actually terribly fond of it, and as far as i know, i have the cartridge because someone else threw it away and i picked it up.
Great video! When reviewing games like this, do you just dedicate a day or two to completing them? I’d probably get bored, if it were 10 years ago, I’d think it’s a lowered graphic game but still complete it with fun, but now that graphics are so good, with 1080p and some games even going 4K, I’m too used to the graphics of that. (Apart from games like Mario, and games meant to give a nostalgic/retro feeling like shovel knight). I played this on the DS years ago and found it okay but found that with the D-Pad, it would be super easy to oversteer, due to the dpad not having sensitivity. Gonna go check out more of your videos now!
It kinda depends. Sometimes I am just playing something for fun (but always recording because who knows when I’ll need b-roll) and my thoughts about it make me feel it’d make a good video; other times I sit down and beat it over a day or three. But I’m very busy with school, work and other creative projects so sometimes like with Final Fronts I’m playing it even after I’ve started writing. I only finished Final Fronts the night before the review came out, but I was about 75% done when I started writing.
Finally somebody giving this game the props in deserves... Never owned a gba, but I was shocked @ how fun this was on emulator... like he said tho, turn the race music off and turn on yours and got a game. 💯 Not to difficult not to Easy, just right
I absolutely loved my GBA copy of Most Wanted back in the day. Such a fun game and impressive graphics for the hardware! I simultaneously owned the DS copy and would constantly come back to the GBA copy because it was leaps and bounds better than the awful DS port.

A lot of people like to dog on the DS version but I still prefer it, I think the GBA version plays too slow. The GBA struggled with racing games in general and there aren't many I could really get into.
That's fair, they're very closely related. It feels like the GBA was the lead platform, though, with the DS following its lead. IMO, that's not how development for those two platforms should have been handled; the DS was good at things that the GBA wasn't, and vice versa.
