  • Now is the time to look back and review the Nintendo Gamecube from a historical perspective. What was good or bad about the console? What are some of the best selling games for the system? How powerful was the Gamecube?
    The original music is written and performed by me (Metal Jesus Rocks). The video game footage was captured by me for review purposes only.

    Perhaps the most underrated and disrespected console of all time, after the Dreamcast.

    • @TheHistorianKing
      @TheHistorianKing 10 лет назад +21

      So true. People talked crap about it when it first came out. I was one of the few who owned the GC while everyone I knew had the PS2.

    • @SayberV1
      @SayberV1 10 лет назад +27

      ***** I used to hate all of my friends and my older brother because all they would do is kiss the PS2's ass when it was nothing special, it was a underpowered boring console that had malfunction problems, whereas the GameCube was powerful, strong and sturdy with a collection of innovative games that you could ONLY experience with a nintendo console. Shigeru Myamoto even said that the Gamecube wasn't even pushed to its full graphical potential.

    • @TheHistorianKing
      @TheHistorianKing 10 лет назад +11

      hehe yup. though I did like the PS2 for the Smackdown, GTA, Jax and Daxter games but other than that, the GC had everything else plus it was more powerful and didn't break as easy.

      SayberV1 The PS2 had by far and way the most versatile and biggest gaming library in any generation in the history of consoles. There are FAR - FAR more quality exclusives on the PS2 than on the GameCube. And ''hating'' your friends for having a different console preference is truly pathetic.

    • @SayberV1
      @SayberV1 10 лет назад +15

      Guilty Bystander PS2 DID NOT have better quality exclusives than the GameCube, this is coming from someone that owned BOTH consoles, what was good on the PS2 could also be found on the more powerful and better engineered XBOX, GameCube's quality games could ONLY be found on the GameCube with that Nintendo magic that just isn't present with the other gaming companies like Sony and Microsoft. The GameCube was totally disrespected for no reason by the masses who would give it a chance and games developers who wouldn't give it a chance by at least releasing games like a Grand Theft Auto etc on the system despite the GameCube having very powerful graphics, hardware and fast load times. My 'hating' is my opinion on that fact so you can take back your 'pathetic' try on an insult to me.

    I still own my Gamecube, I remember my days at college when my friends were all buying PS2 consoles and telling me that the Gamecube was basically rubbish and to steer clear of it. I purchased one at a games shop for next to nothing with an official memory card and gold plated scart lead included. I'm so glad I purchased this console.Due to lack of time, I still have 20 games yet to play, several years on lol. I purposely stay one generation behind as you can save a heap of money.

      @chrispham6599 8 лет назад +11

      Well, remember the N64 controller? It was a great idea, but the designers have failed to realise that the human only has two hands. The N64 had three handles.

    The Gamecube is my favorite console, right up there with SNES. It's sad to see how unappreciated it was. The controller was amazing aside from the tiny d-pad. Although there weren't as many games as other consoles, they really focused on quality and they really delivered. Love the Cube!

      GameCube had more games than N64, Wii U, & even the Original Xbox though didn't it? Xbox was literally shovelware the console for the most part to my knowledge. SNES was to the NES what GameCube was to N64 basically in that both revolutionized what their predecessor did if you look back so it makes sense those would be your 2 favorite consoles.

      Joshua Miller sadly Gamecube has become that system that has attracted those who overlooked it back in the day and keep hearing about the genuinely good titles it had and those who may had one growing up or may of wanted one who now have disposable income. Kinda glad I rebuilt(I say rebuilt as a fair number of games I originally owned for it got swiped) my GC collection when I did, barring a few expensive titles like Gotcha force, Chibi robo and Cubivore as well as a few more common titles like I Ninja, Kirby's air ride, Mario tennis, Mario Golf, the Mario party games, Harvest moon mystical melody, etc. With yesterday's find of Pokemon XD gale of darkness I am pretty much set with the gamecube. got most of the pricier titles like Skies of Arcadia legends, Fire Emblem, Gauntlet dark legacy, Baten Kaitos, Baten Kaitos origins, Legend of Zelda twilight princess and the Zelda collectors edition, Mega man X collection, etc. pretty early before prices sky rocketed. Not to say GC was cheap to collect for but prices were still reasonable usually the 5-10 for commons, 15-20 for Nintendo titles and more sought after stuff was around 35-50.

    • @darsparx
      @darsparx 7 лет назад +1

      DCT
      yeah I've bought quite a bit of stuff for it seeing as I missed out on it(not for the reason of overlooking it but my family never bought me one despite the fact I wanted it so bad and never exploited the wii's ability to play it's games). Kinda skipped over generations growing up and it was strange. Dad had a NES sicne I was little but no SNES then had n64 and skipped to wii. I bought myself a U though to break the cycle especially since I love it still just like my love fo the 3ds and vita...

      I owned a GC when I was a little kid. I still own it. But back then, online wasn't a thing for me. But they should've added much more online features to it. It might've even outsold the Xbox if Nintendo didn't jump to such quick conclusions. Btw they made that announcement in 2003. In 2002 they released the Broadband and modem adapter.

Your writing has gotten better over all these years as well.

    The gamecube was my only "modern" console from about 2002 to 2005 and I LOVED it! It introduced me to so many great games and is directly responsible for my taste in gaming being so diverse nowadays. I loved how experimental and daring Nintendo was with their games on the gamecube and while I love the wii to death, I wish they would return to that inspired era of their history.

  • @hondata974
    @hondata974 10 лет назад +6

    I may be a die-hard PS2 guy, but I felt bad for the reputation the Gamecube got, I thought it was also a great underrated system as well. When I first heard about the GC at the time when my PS2 was brand new, I really thought it was gonna suck and a lot of PS2 fanboys talk shit on it, I kinda criticized the system at first but that's because I never played it before and a lot of GC haters can't admit it, I know that my younger cousin had one and when I played it the first time, I was addicted to it and I had a lot of fun with the system and when my family would come over to her house, I would play the GC with her. Damn, the GC is still super fun and I couldn't get enough of the games it had like Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mario Kart Double Dash and Super Mario Sunshine, I think that system along with the N64 were the best Nintendo systems ever made, I prefer them over the Wii anyday, I know it can do everything the GC could do and more like the backwards compatibility, but I am not a fan of it because it will not look as good as it did with the original system and the GC is better looking than a Wii imo. I have had my PS2 since December 2002 and got another one last year because my laser had problems and that system still runs on me well and is super reliable and I still think it is the best and although my heart still says PS2 is the best, I would still love to own a GC and the Original Xbox as well and they are very reliable too and you won't get as many problems as the newer systems, sure, the GC and Xbox won't get the best exclusive games or the big library amount of games like the PS2, but they were more powerful, they had better graphics and games would load much faster and if you get games for those 2 systems that were also available on the PS2, the GC and Xbox versions of the game would look better than the PS2 version and look much nicer and again, the games would load much faster, the PS2 loads were kind of slow compared to the others. The PS2 may be more fun to play still, but in terms of graphics, power and specs, the PS2 was much inferior compared to much stronger GC and Xbox and I have a lot of respect for them as much as the PS2 and all 3 systems were and still are great in their own rights. The 6th gen definitely fuckin rapes the 7th and 8th gen video game eras by a long shot and it's a shame that they just focus more on graphics and hardware than the gameplay and that's why I still have more fun playing the older systems than the newer ones, I have a PS2, but I also have a PS3, 360 and a Wii, but I still play with my PS2 more, and if I get the GC and Original Xbox, I would play with them more as well.

      Carlos Brandão After SNES, I left Nintendo for Sony and definitely don't regret it. PS1 blew N64 out of the water and PS2 absolutely destroyed GC. I was one of the few that didn't even own a Wii, but I also thought PS3 was merely an okay console. Definitely not on par with SNES, PS1 or PS2. Finally, this gen I actually got a Wii U. Having never owned a Wii, it gives me the opportunity to play the few Wii games I was actually interested in. I still don't think it's very good. The library is too small, but the few good games it does have are amazing. It' also way better than PS4 and Xbone, which have basically just become shitty PCs.

      The only reason the Wii was a success was because of casual gamers thanks to the Wii Fit. Other than that it was just a console that collects dust, no true hardcore gamer wanted that piece of crap. Hardcore gamers either wanted the PS3 or the Xbox 360 at the time. This is why the Wii U isn't selling too well, because they don't have the hardcore or the casual gamers buying the console. Only Nintendo fanboys are buying it and they're clearly not enough to make the Wii U a success. Part of Nintendo's downfall has a lot to do with their bad decisions that would piss off consumers. During the NES days they tried to sue Galoob for making the Game Genie, thank god Nintendo lost that case. During the SNES days they censored Mortal Kombat. And now Reggie thinks that gamers don't want to stream gameplay on Twitch. Which is bad for business, because it should be up to the consumer whether they want to stream games on Twitch or not. It shouldn't be up to a moron like Reggie. They should just fire Reggie because he is clearly out of touch with the gaming community.

    I've had my Gamecube with Gameboy Player and GBA SP for ages. Many games use a connected GBA in different and interesting ways. I've modded my Gamecube replacing the optical drive for SD card reader, GC Loader, and will be doing the GC Dual sometime next year, so It can connect via HDMI. I'm pondering replacing the shiny plastic panel on the drive door with one that is Zelda related, give it a bit more bling on the outside. Unlike my PS2, my Gamecube doesn't gather dust. My PS2 was soft modded awhile back, with the network/modem adapter and a 120 GB HD. I have all the games I play on both of them, I just no longer risk scratching them. Gamecube is almost entirely solid state now, only moving part is the fan. The optical drive still works, just sits on the shelf now in an anti-static bag. The PS2, however, the optical drive in it died over a decade ago. I had to borrow a working PS2 to do the hacked memory card thing, then move the hack to the hard disk.

    Why are the best selling games the most expensive? I remember the days of buying 7 copies of Super Smash Bros Melee for $5 or less each copy (in one day) and selling them to a game shop for $7 a piece where they sold it for $15-$20. I remember when Fire Emblem was a $20 game at GameStop, Skies of Arcadia Legends was $15 and when I picked up my copy of Cubivore for $10. Ah... The good old days... When prices were logical and scalpers didn't butt rape dumb gamers. I will never pay $70 for Super Smash Bros Melee (which sold 16 million copies and was THE best selling GameCube game) if it means never playing that game again. There's no reason for it and if ppl quit paying inflated scalpers prices they'll have to sell for less. How is demand not met when almost as many copies of a game is made as the console itself? I want to love this system more than my PS2 but can't when this happens. Rule of Rose is ridiculous in price but a game that sold less than 60k copies makes sense to be expensive.

    • @michaelyoung3079
      @michaelyoung3079 9 лет назад

      the best selling game on a console to one of the least produced games for a console. That's the comparison I'm the trying to make. I knew Rule of Rose was $150+ and I think it makes a lot more sense than Super Smash Bros Melee being $70. 60k copies to 18m. There are 300x more copies of Smash Bros laying around than Rule of Rose. Atlus produces a very small amount of games and has low print runs for almost all its games. That's why its so expensive. Super Smash Bros Melee is the only best selling game on a console of any generation that's over $10. That's 7x-70x (yes up to 70 times more expensive than Halo 2 which sold less copies than Melee but best selling game for Xbox) the normal price compared to every generation of console. Games like Rule of Rose, Suikoden 2, Misadventures of Trone Bone, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Magic Knight Rayearth and what not all make sense why there so expensive... Low print runs... All those games have less than 300k copies in the wild with Panzer Dragoon Saga less than 30k and the codes been lost so they cannot print, or create any new copies or do a "remaster". Hell they can't even put it on psn or Xbox live bc of that! Super Smash Bros Melee is a different story. Nintendo scalpers. Amiibos, GameCube adapter, majoras mask 3ds, all are case where ppl just inflated prices and rip off consumers. I guess if Nintendo printed more of these things it wouldn't be a problem but SSBM is something that should have never climbed above $20 in my opinion and anyone who's paid these inflated prices or sells them for $70+ is just adding to the problem. 18mil copies of a game and it sells for $70... Makes me throw up in my mouth every time I see it. The best selling game of GameCube ppl! Its like saying Grand Theft Auto San Andreas for PS2, The original Super Mario Bros Duck Hunt cart, Halo 2, Virtua Fighter for Sega Saturn all should be $70+ games! Wtf?! How does this make any sense? Super Smash Bros Melee is about as rare as finding bottled water...

    The Gamecube was actually marginally more powerful than the Xbox due to it's efficiency. The Gamecube used PowerPC which is a RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing) type processor line which allows for the CPU to churn out more code than an equivalently powered x86 processor in less time. An x86 based gamecube probably would have had a CPU clocked at well over 1ghz to get the same result.
    But the GPU was weak, maxing out at 480p while the Xbox and PS2 could do 720p and 1080i.

    • @deathscythefanatic
      @deathscythefanatic 9 лет назад +3

      xbox or ps2 couldn't do 720p let alone 1080i heck ps3 can only do 720p and it upscales to 1080p sure you can play ps2 or xbox on 720p only after it upscaled them in other words you was playing a streched version of 480p and ps3 plays streched versions of 720p

      deathscythefanatic Some games on PS2 and Xbox could do native 720p and 1080i
      Valkyrie Profile 2, Gran Turismo 4, Jackass the Game, and Tourist Trophy on PS2...and Atari Anthology, Dragon's Lair 3D, Enter the Matrix, MX Unleashed, and MX vs ATV Unleashed on Xbox are all capable of 1080i video natively. There are many more on Xbox that can do 720p.

      Resolution and framerate largely isn't a function of hardware performance but of developer choice. You could run quake III at 16k or 2000 FPS on a middle-of-the-line PC but most developers target 60 FPS at 1080p or even 30 FPS for multiplatform games. There is no upper bound to the amount of computing power that can be blown at 1080p; doing path tracing on complex scenes until it converges at 1080p on nvidias latest RTX graphics cards without any shortcuts or cheating would be in the minutes-per-frame territory.
      The gamecube chose cheap and cartoony graphics. PS3 developers chose 30 FPS at some target resolution; if they accidentally end up affording 60 FPS, they increase the draw distance, add som anisotropic, add some more detail until it bogs down to 30 FPS. PS4 developers made the same choice. That was absolutely a choice and really hurt games on those consoles.

I'd like to see the PS2 handle 30 racers going that fast @60fps with insane visual effects happening everywhere. Especially if you hook your GC up with S-Video in a CRT or with component cables, it looks timeless.

    You cant realy say that the Xbox is faster just becuase the clockfreqvensy is higher. Xbox uses a quite slow celeron processor that is clocked, for the time, high frequensy. PS2 is just the opposite with a 64bit SIMD CPU, really fast, but slow clock, the Gamecube aslo uses a 64 bit processor, but its not as fast as the PS2, but the frequency is higher. I say its quite a fair match. Point out that the PS2 have the fastest CPU ram and GameCube have the slowest. The problem is that the Xbox have shared memory that slows the it down quite a bit.
    Also, about loading the games. The game cube have less than half the memory as the xbox, of cause it loads faster. (the gamecube disc is actually just a 8cm DVD with a special code on it)
    Also looking on the video ram. The GC and PS2 is quite simular, but here the xbox lags after quite a bit, on the other hand the xbox can load mutch bigger textures.
    Basicly the xbox games looks better becuase it uses higher res textures, was a huge deal back then (nowdays its all about the shaders)

    • @matsv201
      @matsv201 10 лет назад

    • @matsv201
      @matsv201 10 лет назад

      Well, its harder to analyse the difrance in the GPU, really have to dig up the eqvivalent PC unit, but the GC can produce around 650Mpixel/second and the Xbox around 900Mpixel/second. In the texture part the difrance is larger.
      In bandwidth its even more complicated because the GC have 3MB of on chip GPU cache (similar to what the xbone have to day). 3MB was at the time quite a lot, compare that to the 360 using 10MB 5 years later.
      The GC have quite a lot of ram to 43MB, sure less than the xbox 64MB, but the operation-system is alot lighter on the GC.
      The PS2 GPU is a bit slower than the GC. Worse, the PS2 use a traditional signal processing processor instead of a GPU. Its more flexible, but less efficient.
      Also back in those days the GPU was more CPU intensive. That is, the GPU uses the CPU to a larger extent to sett up the frame before rendering it, making a heavier CPU load.
      Today the GPU can virtually do everything (except starting the code) it self. But with the DX11 at least, the firmware lookes up the CPU to do nothing like 80% of the time, making the actual CPU load quite high anyway. With DX12 the will address this problem. Also, Mantel and openGL don´t have that problem to that extent.

    I just have the one GC...but I'd like to eventually add another color, just in case this one ever failed me.

    This is by far my favorite console of all time and its the most underrated console to ever come out, 2020 and still play it.

    the production and just.. over feel to these videos are great. God forbid we had something like a history channel set only to video games I could easily see these on there.

    It's really the story of Nintendo that it's thought of as a kid's stuff at the time and later on you find out it wasn't since you approach it without hype or hatred. This trend kind of continues to this day, I feel.

    I loved the GC I remember getting launch week from Media Play. It had a slow first few months but then some really kickass games started to come out.
