Sorry, if it was not for the officials, Canada would have not won. The better team lost. And 99 and 66 are the two best players in the history of the game , but were NOT the two best players in the Canada Cup 87.

Iavor Balabanov sorry to burst your bubble but Gretzky had in 9 games 3 goals 18 assist for 21 pts to lead the tourney ... Mario was second with 11 goals 7 assists for second in scoring .... Canada 🇨🇦 won the tourney that is what makes you the best team in that tournament .... also best on best in the last 20 years what is Russia’s record against Canada beat on Best ? Look it up sorry but winning is what makes you the best

Canada had a huge advantage playing those games with the nhl size rink and Canadian referees but the rink should have been Olympic/international size since it was international competition the bigger rink would help the Soviet style of play, the referees were very biased

@@iavorbalabanov8567 crunch time 2 minutes left overtime basically and wayne decides to play chess. that setup was just mind blowing the anticicpation the presense to put him self where he was to make mario make a no brain decision to put the defense in a vulnerable state and to put mario in a situation to deliver pure genious

Hockey has evolved and is played at a higher level. But there has never been a 3 game series and collection of high stakes hockey at any level that matches how great hockey that was!

Higher level?😂 Breathe on my glove, penalty.Give a Scott Stevens thundering check at center ice, oops penalty,Puck over the glass, oops penalty, Can't change on an icing.Evolved my ass😂

@ just talking about players skill level which I also think has a lot to do with advancement in equipment and training and all the off ice support etc. and all the other business. I generally agree with you that it’s pretty milk toast hockey comparatively speaking. My point stands. 87 was fucking epic!

I was 20 watching that canada cup and Canada got better as the tourney went on. Yes 3CP1 were an amazing team playing together full time for yrs on end. While USA and Canada get a few weeks to form a team. NHL players are built with more heart and desire and will. You can say this and that about reffing and penalties 3 games 6-5 6-5 6-5 how much better can you ask of 2 amazing hockey countries ??

"That Soviet hockey team was probably the greatest team ever assembled and we really had no business beating them. We won that series because Keenan out coached Tikhonov." Gretzky in his book "Stories of the Game". To be honest I don't think Canada could have won that series if some of the games were played in Moscow. They had home ice the whole tournament.

I do not agree at all on the refereeing. Over here in Europe we actually were mainly behind Canada, but gradually that changed because we felt many fouls made by Canadians (including the last goal) were simply not given. The Russians were a bit better all in all, the endresult was unfair due to refereeing.
