Why Richmond native Kemba Smith’s wrongful 24-year prison sentence is being turned into a film

  • In 1994, at the age of 24, Richmond native Kemba Smith was sentenced to more than 24 years in prison for a drug crime that she says she did not commit.
The story captured the nation during the height of the war on drugs and became a story about the flaws of mandatory minimum sentencing laws. Now, more than two decades later, the story is being transformed into a film which will soon air on B.E.T.

I heard of her story in the national media in 2000 because she was pardoned by President Clinton before he left office. It was a big thing where I’m from, I was in the 11th grade. Now, before her being sent to prison while pregnant, no didn’t hear of that, it was swept under the rug, but when she was pardoned, it made national news. That was during the time of BJ Brown and Karen Clarke and Amadou Diallo. All of that was definitely national news.

I spent several years as a dentist at a federal prison site. These inmates were wealthy primarily white . Occasionally a young minority inmate got routed there. One case was a young black male ,functional illiterate ( limited reading and writing skills) . I often read many of the inmatecases. But this case was out of East St Louis, he was on the same floor ,but different room when the drug raid happen. Everyone on the floor was arrested, . He knew what was going on ,knew some of the people, he was unable to get released as being his educational limits he elected to get a public defender. Being noisy, I question him as I had to read and interpret the health questionnaire. I can assres there are some people incarcerated that really shouldn't be. Oh, just to let you know this site included some of the best hackers of the 80s, old mafia guys, international criminals plus a separate witness protection site.

Women were being sent to jail for a lengthy sentence because they transferred a call to someone ( bf, friend or family member) who was a drug dealer. The kicker was these women did not know the individual was a drug dealer nor the nature of the call. The person would call and ask to speak to the individual. It was WILD to say the least. The movie is actually on Tubi now.

I would love for someone to look into my son jaquez Smith from Florida case sentence to life in prison at 18 years old never killed anyone didn't sell drugs never shot anyone.. the judges was biased I end up finding out he had two cases open from the public defender telling me that the judge both judges were married to each other.. the first time he was sentenced to a prison sentence at 16. At that point I knew they were sending it to him to prison time so if you get in any more time they can max out the sentence and that is what they did when they gave him a life sentence

DEBARY, Fla. - An Orange County man with nine prior felonies is facing life in prison after his latest conviction.
Investigators said 21-year-old Jaquez Tuijay Smith was convicted on Wednesday of principal to armed burglary following a jury trial.
Smith was involved in a break-in at a DeBary gun store where 18 guns were stolen in July 2018, records show.
Prosecutors said he is a prison release re-offender and he is qualified for the enhanced sentence.
Smith committed the crime in a three-year window after being released from prison, according to prosecutors.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said his nine prior convictions include: grand thefts, burglary, criminal mischief and grand theft auto.
“We are fortunate that the defendants were caught and 17 firearms recovered. You can bet those firearms would have been put on the street and used for criminal activities. The defendant is a career criminal with nine prior felony convictions. He will spend the rest of his life in prison,” State Attorney R.J. Larizza said.
Sheriff Michael Chitwood said the guns stolen in this case would have been used to hurt or kill someone.
“I’m just grateful no innocent person was shot during the break-in, and I’m thankful for all the hard work and follow-up that led to this conviction today. All other criminals thinking about coming to Volusia County to victimize our residents or our businesses need to think about the consequences waiting for you when you get caught,” Chitwood said.
