  • Boo Boo Hut, in the Kokatahi Valley, sits at an elevation of 615m.
The hut is said to have been given its name from a cocked-up food drop at a deer culler's camp there in the 1950's, but the 1919 topo map shows a creek next to the hut already named Booboo Creek.
The trail heads through the impressive Whakarira Gorge with its carved walls and deep blue waters, before climbing steeply to Boo Boo Hut.
Complete with a side trip, involving another steep climb, to bag Pinnacle Biv, which sits at around 1250 metres, Crinkle Top at 1315 metres and Genoa Peak at 1503 metres.
0:00 Road end to Boo Boo Hut
2:33 Pinnacles Hut and Crinkle Top
4:55 Boo Boo Hut to Road end

I used to live in Kokatahi. The entire Westland province (the coast) is beautiful but Lake Kaniere, Kokatahi, Woodstock, Mahinapua and so many areas in that general part of the Hokitika area are breath taking. Looking over the bridge into the Hoki gorge at turquoise, milky water is something you never readily forget.

A hike ain't a hike without experiencing its rugged terrains, up and down through bush, water and mud. It what makes an adventure epic.

Beautiful! Enjoyed watching it. New Zealand is a spectacular land. Re the Boo Boo hut. We had something of the kind on Macquarie Island when I spent a year down there in 1977. They were timber, of course, with a hatch door near the bottom. Also, each corner was held down with wire rope so as not to be blown off their foundations in the winds. Once inside, very snug.

Hi Verity, thought I’d pop over and see your video style after seeing your comment on my reel, thanks. Firstly, this is a great vlog if it’s a personal video journal, but Wendy (comment below) has provided some honest feedback (most people don’t bother) Rather than posting a series of random scenes meaningful to you, try to stitch them together as a story to make them more meaningful to us, the viewer. Talking to the audience can help achieve that, wish you well, it’s a tough gig this RUclips journey, I’ve struggled from the get go 👋

@@OutdoorsmanDave thank 😀 I really appreciate all feedback and I take it all in to try and make my content better for all viewers. I really appreciated Wendy’s comment and if you watch my Kakapo hut loop video I’ve made it into a story with quite a bit of narration.

How tricky was the section from the gorge to boob boo hut. We went for a day walk to the bridge were the gorge is but not further. Thank you great video !

It wasn’t tricky at all, it was steep in places and there was some windfall and that really big tree to climb over but well marked.

I guess I don't understand the video. There's no talking...you only see the hikers briefly. You don't stop to show anything. I was wondering what a boo boo hut was that's what drew me in but I have no idea what it is You didn't even pause Definitely not my type of video good luck In the future

Hi there, thank you so much for watching the video and your feedback, I’m always looking at ways I can improve and inspire more people into New Zealand’s amazing backcountry. If you read the description of the video you will learn why it is called Boo Boo Hut.
