I was on the square for the welcome of Brezhnev. Brezhnev and Zhivkov were in an open car, standing straight, hand in hand. The car was moving about 30km / h to allow everyone to see Brezhnev and throw a flower to him if he wanted to. There was not need of sniper, with a stone he could be hit, but the people sincerely welcomed him. Today's, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov passes the streets of Sofia at a high speed, in a series of 5 armored jeeps, so that he could not be identified in which exactly he is.
You make an interesting and valid point. A contrast between the ability of President Zhivkov to travel in his capital city in an open car at slow speed without any danger to himself,and the way that the current Bulgarian leader, "democratically elected, has to travel anonymously in an armoured vehicle.

@@TheRichardSpearman, detractors would say that it is forced. Yet again, you have had western leaders riding around in armoured vehicles for awhile. Xi of China will often ride open just like Zhivkov & Brezhnev did in this video.
I am quite shocked that you did not get any negative backlash to your comment. It is true though. It is not necessarily what westerners want to admit, even to themselves, but not since Kennedy in the US have US presidents been unguarded with people in public.
Not to worry, KGB was everywhere, dressed in military and civilian outfit. Workers would be taken from factories and children from schools to make them greet Brezhnev.

Zhivkov was the last of Brezhnev's friends to die.
