Kanami hands Miku her musical notes.
Miku: I think you have enough ideas here for a new album, po.
    Kanami: That's the first song.
Seriously though, this is a great song. I really like the vocals after the guitar solo. Miku has taken the role of "backing vocalist" and elevated it. If you want a deep cut with Miku as lead singer, check out "Beauty and the Beast"

Seems Kanami wrote it for Saiki - and the intro is kind of Saiki's "Namie Amuro"-moment - this being one of Saiki's personal favourite artists and role models - a Japanese R'n'B singer and dancer sometimes termed "Japan's Madonna" to kind of explain her to western audiences (still a bit of a bad habit - Madonna might as well be the Namie Amuro of the west, so....)
Also one of a few of their songs Saiki, and not Kobato, has written the lyrics for. (Saiki has a a fear of the sea and drowning and used some metaphorics for that as a way to describe feelings of vulnerability when abandoning oneself to a love relationship - Kobato otoh was a swimmer in high-school, with a thing for sharks, so no hydrophobia there...).

You're gonna have more material to choose from because yesterday they played (recorded and streamed) the final show for their 10th anniversary tour. 33 songs during almost 3:30hs with a couple of new songs, new intros, acoustics and Saiki playing a solo piano version. Good sound and energy also.

I found that too and its because every song, heard for the first time, contains so much unique creativity that your brain is excited and dopamine surges within it giving you intense pleasurable sensations akin to... a bacon & egg roll, other pleasurable experiences can be substituted. 'corallium' is just a third of the impeccable trifecta in the 'sense' single release. am not sure if you've heard enough of the songs from 'unseen world' to judge it as their music pinnacle, but personally, i view this song along with 'sense' [the carrier track] and 'hibana' as compositions that stand toe to toe with the 14 tracks from the aforementioned album.

I believe the lyrics in this song are by Saiki- her first full composition. She likes to sing fast lyrics where possible. As you say-complex as hell-catchy as f**k. Many have said that most bands would have made 4 songs out of one Band-Maid arrangement. As a drummer I would agree with you about Akane's style- non-metal styles of drumming at metal speed. I've been around a while and can only suggest a couple of rock bands in the last 50 years that might come up with a composition like this as it edges on the Jazz/Rock/Metal fusion line.

Honestly I think the main thing is just knowing how the vowels sound - a = ah, i = ee, u == oo, e = eh, o = oh. (Or if you've played Metal Gear: "the la-li-lu-le-lo??") Once you know those and pronounce them all (like sah-ee-kee, said casually it comes out like sigh-key) you're like 90% of the way there
And hell yeah Miku's the best. I've always thought Saiki has a more typical "main vocalist" voice, but Miku has a bigger range and really makes use of it in her backing vocals - and she's got so good now she can totally front things and sound like she was always meant to be there. A true badass

  • @zer0tzer0
    @zer0tzer0 7 месяцев назад +2

You are correct sir! BAND-MAID are Masters of The Backing Track! It will have any doubled vocal tracks they can't do with just a delay, all the drum effects, and any synth instruments and keyboards Kanami did for the album. But Saiki's name is pronounced like Psyche, (Sigh-Key). I have described their style as genreless, or a genre unto itself, but I heard someone else boil it down to a Punk Band with no boundaries. That works just as well. But if you prefer Miku's voice, see if you can find her song 'Rock In Me' for a glimpse of what BAND-MAID might have been like without Saiki. 'Saynakidori's good too, but if you can find the one with the false start it's like a comedy act. Also, her April Fool's Day solo thing as Cluppo, 'PEACE&LOVE' is quite good and very different.

MISA (Mee-sah) - Bass Guitar, Nickname: "The Barefoot Assassin" MISA always performs barefoot as she states she likes to feel the music through her feet, and "kills" everything she plays.

You said “SAIKI” just right. There are only five vowel sounds in Japanese: あ、い、う、え、お. In Romaji: a, i, u, e, o. (If you ever studied Spanish, you’re almost there.) The other sounds are diphthongs formed by various combinations of those five vowels.
I didn’t get CORALLIUM at first, but like all of MINCHO’s more recent compositions, it gets better and better each time you listen to it. It really plays with the formula for satisfying the competing requirements for novelty and familiarity required to engage listeners. There are so many changes, that as you listen, you are simultaneously anticipating the next change, and then when it comes, you are still surprised by it. It’s very satisfying. At the end of the breakdown here, I heard backing tracks doubling the vocals of both SAIKI and KOBATO, so at least four voices there.
The track preceding CORALLIUM on the UNLEASH EP is I’LL. It has a totally different groove, but it’s equally complex and rewarding.

Akane is the drummer/glutton and anime nerd. Kanami is the lead guitar/music nut and solo enthusiast. Just for reference.
And lastly backing tracks! For those who don't like them being used, listen to the way it's used here. Then listen to a "Top 100" track from the states. Big difference in my book, is that Band-Maid is using the tracks to add to an already solid base of music. The ones that do it poorly are the ones using it as the music itself for them to preform over. It's a spice to add to a great dish. Too much would overpower the flavor, and that's what you see too often in other examples. Which can leave a bad taste in your mouth, making any mention of it negative in your mind going forward.

The backing tracks adds a lot to their songs. When they use layered vocals it gives Saiki and especially Miku a richer sound and helps a lot with pitch control. That's why it sounded like there were more singers. I believe Kanami (lead guitar and composer, not drummer) still creates all the keyboard and electronic parts, and mixes and edits the backing track, at least for the final demo. Not sure how much of Kanami's work still makes it to the studio release, but I'd like to know. I think it was lot in the past.

If you want to hear how _they_ pronounce their own names search for "BAND-MAID / Sakura Con 2016 / Member Intros" on the BM 4-Life channel. It is a short 3 minute video from their first appearance outside Japan at the Sakura-Con cultural event in Seattle, Washington U.S.A. The video is bogus (it's a video of the video screens from waaaaay back in the hall) but it will explain "small pigeon" and you'll hear the origin of "MISA MISA MISA" chant, and Saiki will say her name the way she wants *_YOU_* to say it.
For additional entertainment, turn on CC and choose auto-generated translation into English. It _starts_ okay ... before the mushrooms kick in.

You're making the mistake of generalizing Band-Maid fans based on a very limited sample size, that being the comments on a handful of videos. For many of us, there is no preference between Saiki and Miku. Each is exceptional and more importantly, they make each other better. Also, as far as pop-punk vs metal, Band-Maid simply can't be shoehorned into a single genera, even within an individual song. It's just Band-Maid doing Band-Maid things, making great music using all the tools available to them

Hi Mark, got a suggestion for you. Once upon a time there were two Japanese bands: Iris Mundo and Velka. (Iris Mundo still exists). Iris Mundo has a female singer and a guitarist. Velka had a female drummer and bassist who both sang too. They met at a festival, figured between them they actually have a band and joined together as a side project called 362. Now, I'm not so keen on Iris Mundo but Velka was a cracking two piece band. And 362 were even better. Apart from the maids these ladies were so unique they were my second favourite acts from Japan (Otoboke Beaver being a close 3rd place). Unfortunately Velka split a few months ago, killing the 362 project too. Please check these ladies out before they are forgotten to time.
Velka "Sacrifice" (the first bassline I ever played and learnt) Just a funky bop ruclips.net/video/SiejkX1K5OE/видео.html
362 "Dirty" (Velka and Iris Mundo) ruclips.net/video/xVMDtKh5tDc/видео.html
I suspect that 362 might be more up your street (heavier), but I love the Velka vibe.

Akane, the drummer can play pretty much any style, it's always fun to listen to her drum parts.
Vocally, there are many enough people who absolutely love Miku's softer, airy and poppier vocal. Band-Maid throw in different harmony lines, vocal part to emphasise Miku's voice to add the unique flavour and texture, but a band like Band-Maid need a rockier vocal whether you like it or not, I know your preference by now 😂, but you have to see both Saiki and Miku as essential ingredients for a perfect dinner plate.
If you love Miku's voice so much you can always react to Kruppo.
BTW you pronounced Saiki spot on perfect.😊

Sorry I didn't make it to the end of the video to find out if I was wrong or not. I got distracted by a video from this band called BTS. Have you heard of them? They're fantastic, they really transcend the KPOP genre, music in general really. You should check them out, but like you HAVE TO do a full album! It's just so dense with meaning and soul. I actually can't understand what they're saying because I don't speak Chinese, at least not anymore. Strangest thing I got my 8th vaxx and suddenly I couldn't speak or understand Chinese anymore... probably just coincidence. Anyway so yea, I can't understand what they're saying but like I can just FEEL how meaningful it is, like heart to heart balls touching no lube, know what I mean? IDK just something about the RIZZ these boys have. Anyway if I had to choose an album to recommend to you I'd probably say start with the White Album but skip any song that isn't prime and if the title starts with a B play it backwards. After that I'd suggest Abbey Road but don't actually play the album, just gaze into the cover and try to imagine what the tracks sound like. It's uncanny but I promise you that the songs will sound exactly like what you expect them to sound like until you play them. Honestly IDK how Korea was able to hide a band like the BeaTleS from us for so long; the craziest part being I'm not even sure they were a country yet when the band formed! Uh I had one more joke but then I smoked some Band-Maid and forgot, I'll see myself out.

I think the pop punk label is a little off though, they are more post-hardcore, with rock and metal elements. I get you regarding Miku's voice. I also think she'd make an amazing lead singer herself, which is why the band gives her at least one lead song every album. Yet, she voluntarily took a back seat to vocal duties to serve the band and its music better.

I'm more of a fan of the "Tiny Hat" era with Band-Maid myself (when the Drummer Akane used to wear a, well...erm...Tiny Hat lol) I'm off the Band-Maid bell curve as far as the mental stuff goes; don't get me wrong, I appreciate the spectacular evolving musicianship, but a lot of the newer stuff is a bit too busy for me. I much prefer the more "radio friendly", less thrash beat stuff, with more vocal harmonies. This one counts as one of my favourite combinations, edging into the busy, but the rest is bliss.
