For those who don't know Nora is a character from the Plough and the Stars, a great novel about a tenement house in Dublin during 1916, Nora is the wife of Jack Who used to sing her this song, but he died in the rising. A great song for a great book.
True- though the song predates that play by 60 years. The original song uses the name “Maggie,” which O’Casey replaced with the character’s name “Nora.”
Thank you for telling. I kind of remembered or guessed that this song could not be just a great love song but had some connection to the rising something like Grace maybe not that great story but still a great love song me favorite anyway. Thanks
@@nickyreynolds3326correct , it was Maggie and written by a Canadian , O'Casey being a member of James Connollys ICA would have known his daughter Nora who was also in the ICA so I always assumed he named the character after Nora Connolly ,
This is very peaceful. I feel after running so kilometers for nothing, finally I sit back & getting peace which I'm looking for. Some things like this music really teach us & we start believing, life is just for peace.
Well sung. And great lead guitar work! The song comes from "When You and I Were Young Maggie". The original words were in a poem written in the mid-1800's by a Canadian teacher from Hamilton, Ontario. Maggie was his wife who died young. James A Butterfield, an English-born American composed this beautiful tune for the poem some time later. It became popular all over the world. The song gained new life in the 1920's when it was used in Sean O'Casey's play.
O'Casey used it in " the plough and the stars " James Connolly's daughter was named Nora and she married an ICA soldier , I assume that's who O'Casey named the character for , he would have known them all from when he was in the ICA
The song when you and I were young Maggie was written in 1866? By gorge w Thomson and became popular on phonograph record's in the early 1900s Nora was written by jhonny McEvoy if I'm not mistaken. Such a unique voice there'll never be another like his.
No doubt world is wonderful & full of strange things but it doesn't mean that not interesting. All depends on state of mind & personal thinking & self liking and much more. Just one thing is true, God is great & world always beautiful just need to have good eyes to see
What enchantment, from a truly missed.but never forgotten maestro.
I listen to this song quite often Just Great

Is there a similar song to this that uses the name Maggie rather than Nora?
