Made this hat today (didn't buy the pattern). Came out amazingly. I made the hat slightly longer and with 5mm needles instead of 4 mm (finished the last 3 decreases on 4mm dpn - for a flatter top size down on your needles a tip from my aunt). Amazing tutorial. You inspired me to start knitting this summer. I've done a few of your other videos and I plan on buying your sweater pattern and doing that next. Please keep creating these videos for us. Thank you so much for sharing your craft ❣️
You’re videos were the only thing that helped me learn knitting while I was pregnant! I love your videos so much and am so grateful for you and this channel!
New knitter here. Not only am I a teacher and know a good teacher when I see one (you are amazing!!!) but I am a math teacher and will be showing my kids this year that knitting is math hahaha. I just finished the 8" of 1x1 and going into the decrease and after watching what I am about to embark upon, you make me confident I can do it :) thank you, Jeff
If you’ve never knit with circulars before then the big hat would be a gentler introduction: ruclips.net/video/23gmF0WFXdI/видео.html or the waffle stitch hat here: ruclips.net/video/xFpVn_X47sQ/видео.html
Thanks Jay! I remember being a very anxious beginner knitter so I try to think ahead with these tutorials and address any questions or concrete that a new knitter would have!
love this! just completed my beanie! i used the magic loop method. this was my first beanie attempt and it was so easy to understand your pattern. took me just over 2 days to make.. i’ll be making beanies for christmas. thanks!
I'm glad I found this pattern. It works up quickly and easily. The final decrease with the 3 sl psso was challenging but I used small crochet hook to bring the k2tog stitch through and got me where I needed to be.
This pattern is amazing! I've made two of these already (one in red, one in yellow) and am currently working on a blue one :-) Since I like to double fold my beanies, I knit them to 9 inches in length before I start decreasing. I also found that if you want to upsize or downsize, to do so in sets of 8 stitches, that way the decreases won't be affected! Thank you for sharing this pattern!!! :-) ♡
Hey, if I want to knit a larger hat, do I just have to add 8 stitches for the cast on? 112 for example. This will be my first hat so I'm just making sure I understand it correctly. Thank you in advance!!
Love this new video! Would you ever show the ending where you do magic loop on this same pattern instead of going to DPNs? I would love to see how that works. If you ever make a fun easy sock pattern to do, I would so purchase that tutorial too. Great content like alway!!!
Thanks for this! I really appreciate all the optional learning opportunities and beginner friendly alternatives! Excited to try and learn a few very soon with this video!
I’ve knitted this before and absolutely loved it but I started decreasing at about 6 inches because by bf didn’t want it too slouchy. I love your videos though I have made so many hats for family and feel like a pro 😊
I've tried this beanie twice now. First when I started learning and now after 3 sweaters and many other small items. I consider myself a relatively competent knitter, managing short rows for shaping, colorwork, increases, decreases, cables, what have you and I've yet to manage an aesthetic version of this pattern.
This pattern is exactly what I was looking for this week. Thank you. I have been experimenting with doing tubular cast on, finally got it! I had some beautiful aran, cast on 104 in 1x1 hoping to use a cable pattern. As I used the yarn, “the yarn talked,” keep it simple. Love your deceases. Going for it.
Hi! This is my first project knitting in the round and I need to increase the finished diameter by an inch or two. If I add additional stitches casting on, how does this affect the decrease rounds? Is there a science to it?
This is insane!!!!! 😵💫😵 I will NEVER be able to make this. I wish you had a version of the beanie made on straight needles only, like you did for the hat with the pom pom, that one I managed to make, but I really want a beanie! 😭😭😭
Hi, this video looks amazing! However, if I want to knit with 10mm needles, how many stitches do I need and is there a formula that I can use to calculate(don’t want to interrupt you with such questions all the time!)? Anyway, thanks a lot. You made me a proper knitter in about 2 days. I always think that whoever can actually teach me to do something is a sign of that person being really talented. So there xxxx
Great tutorial as all your videos, thanks for these! Only thing I'd regret here is you're not using the magic loop technique, so we have to buy DPNs. I will try this pattern but using magic loop instead.
Same question here as a lot of folks, I started a hat that has more stitches than your pattern, it was a much thinner wool, and I am not sure how to calculate the decrease.
I casted on 104 sts and the knit for some time only to find it was definitely at least 1" too small, even for a 20" circumference head. Any advice?: I am using Rios Worsted superwash merino wool. The yarn says it's 18-22sts per 4 inches on 4.5-5.5 mm. I did a gauge swatch that came out to 23.5 sts per 4 inches on 4mm. I thought this yarn would be sufficient, but is it too small? Too big? The yarn in the video looks like a larger than mine, but somehow I am not coming out to 35 sts per 4 inches. Should I be using a stockinette gauge or a ribbed gauge? I watched the gauge video, but it did not help my brain unravel the mystery. Any and all help appreciated! Or recommendations on how to proceed using the same pattern. Thanks!
Great video! I'm a beginner and have a very basic question. With the slip knot, does it matter if the part you pull to tighten is the tail end or the working end? Thank you
Okay so I used this as a template for making socks, just to start of course. My magic loop didn't work out. 68 cast on stitches (+ an extra one per magic loop trick I learned that I have mentioned here before). I started the join on row 2. 32 inch cables. I can't manipulate the needles. They're locked too close together. What went wrong? How is it any different?? Please help.
I love this but I'm looking for the one everyone is wearing that has a flat top instead of a point. I call them cop hats and I have an image. I'm sure it's a matter of when I end the decrease. And then do a three needle bind off.
Hi Sandy, the pattern is in the link in the description. Once you get to the page, just scroll down to the bottom of the page and you’ll see a “buy” button. Hope that helps! And thank you for your support 😊
Love your videos, starting a project for January. Um might be a dumb question but what do you do when you don’t have enough of a tail and need to get the final stitches on?
Hey Davina, I just finished the hat and am a little unhappy about how uneven some of my stitches look... did you block your beanie in any way? Do you think it's even suited for blocking or will it just stretch out too much?
Hello! This video has been helpful :D I just have one question tho, I am using a double pointed needles and I'm not sure how to proceed after finishing the 104 st of German Twist Cast On.
Unfortunately there’s no way to untwist it after the fact. Before joining make sure the sts aren’t twisted. I go over this in this knitting in the round video: ruclips.net/video/mO-w_N5CFZk/видео.html
Such a great tutorial. I am a beginner and I have a question, how can I make the top of the beanie less pointy? I am planning to make a ski mask/balaclava using this pattern but the only thing is that the top of the beanie is pointy. I would really appreciate your help on this. Really hoping to get a reply.
Do you know why someone would put in 1 extra stitch during cast-on for magic loop? NimbleNeedles said to do it in his magic loop video, but he didn't explain why and I haven't found anyone else who says to put an extra stitch on casting on. So, if that is something helpful that I would like, should I go ahead and just cast on 105 stitiches for this? And if so, what modifications would I need to make to your instructions?
He may suggest an extra stitch to create a seamless join. I go over it in this video tutorial where you add an extra stitch to create that invisible join: ruclips.net/video/Yk6Ns6pDXyg/видео.htmlsi=QQGfmQcpDNShK7Ro hope that helps!
Hello! I really appreciate this tutorial!! Stuck a little though the video jumped from decrease round five into final decrease round, wondering if I should be doing the four even rounds between the fifth and final decrease rounds?
“After working Decrease Round 5, knit the Final Decrease Round with no even rounds in-between.” I couldn’t remember so I looked it up on the written pattern, linked in the description 😁
@@sheepandstitch oh boy… I missed this part of the instructions completely and knitted 4 even rounds between 5th and final decrease. No wonder mine came out so pointy… 😂
Do you have another way to reduce this hat? I don’t like how loose things look from the passover. I like my things to look professional, and mine just looks amateur :/
I love this! But I’ve been having lots of issues with joining the round. There is always a gap at the start of the round and the stitches look messy. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I googled it and tried doing an invisible join but somehow it still didn’t work. This is my 4th attempt 😭😭😭
I love this beanie! I’m a first time knitter and I have a question! I’m at the 8” mark and noticed that some of the knit rows going down, the yarns are being twisted. Not sure if I’m saying that correctly, but they aren’t straight? I’m using cotton yarn, what am I doing wrong?
I just finished this pattern in light gray an dit turned out great! I like a good slouch in the back so I knitted to 10” before I started the decrease. Next time I might do the decrease rounds without the four even rounds in between to make the end less pointy. Do you think this will work?

Hi, you knitted to 10", was it ok with 2 balls of yarn ? 😊
Well, what if you have a family of 23+ inch head circumpherences? 😬How does more cast on stitches change the decrease formula? I've never knitted in round or even decreased before, only knit scarves and crocheted socks 😕🤷♀ Thank you very much for this beautiful tutorial, and thank you in advance for any reply. Ps, I happen to love old 'sailor fashion', if you can say that☺Ds.
Hey Sheep and Stitch! I want to give this project a try... I watched your video on gauge and I’m curious if it’s the same when working in the round. This project says 35 sts/ 31 rounds = 4”/10cm in 1×1 rib. Does this mean I need to knit a whole 4 inch long tube with circular needles/DPNs instead of a the normal square swatch? If so... man that’s a lot to knit just to make sure I’ve got gauge😭 I AM using the recommended yarn and needle size, and it IS a stretchy hat... so maybe can I just skip on the gauge in this situation? Any tips would be appreciated! Love your videos!
Where can I print out the pattern? You say in the video that I can print out the pattern, but I've hunted through the website thousands of times and I still can't find where to print it.

Hello
I’m a beginner knitter, on round 4 or 5 when the pattern says rib stitch all the way to the marker why did u start with a purl and not a knit?
Can I cut the gauge in half? Like instead of 35 stitches and 31 rounds, could I do something like 17.5 stitches and 15.5 rows= 2” in 1x1 rib
