In this video, I’ll show you how to knit a classic fisherman's beanie. Some may call them a watch cap or a fisherman’s hat or maybe a toque (if you’re Canadian!)
Whatever you call it, I’ll show you how to knit this classic hat step-by-step in this tutorial.
This hat is knit in a beginner-friendly 1x1 rib, and it’s got a sleek decrease that keeps the rib pattern intact.
This hat can be worn cuffed for a fisherman’s look or un-cuffed for a slouchy feel.
With two sizes, one for adults and one for babies and toddlers, this hat is perfect for the whole family!
Please note: The price of the PDF pattern will fluctuate with time to keep up with inflation and the average price of a cup of coffee.

Sheep and stitch videos make me SO HAPPY!
Aww thank you! That makes me happy!🤗
Samme
Made this hat today (didn't buy the pattern). Came out amazingly. I made the hat slightly longer and with 5mm needles instead of 4 mm (finished the last 3 decreases on 4mm dpn - for a flatter top size down on your needles a tip from my aunt).
Amazing tutorial. You inspired me to start knitting this summer. I've done a few of your other videos and I plan on buying your sweater pattern and doing that next. Please keep creating these videos for us. Thank you so much for sharing your craft ❣️
Can you please do a sweater/cardigan tutorial nextt?!
yeah
I love how your patterns are simple yet so beautiful. This will be the third I’ve purchased .
Aww thank you so much for your support! 🤗
I'm glad I found this pattern. It works up quickly and easily.
The final decrease with the 3 sl psso was challenging but I used small crochet hook to bring the k2tog stitch through and got me where I needed to be.
You’re videos were the only thing that helped me learn knitting while I was pregnant! I love your videos so much and am so grateful for you and this channel!
YOOOOO! what is the gender fo your baby?
Thanks for this! I really appreciate all the optional learning opportunities and beginner friendly alternatives! Excited to try and learn a few very soon with this video!
I’m always here for you!!! So excited to see your new tutorial! Please post more!🥰🥰🥰
Awww thank you! I’ve got another video in the works right now!
I bought the pattern, finished the hat and my husband loves it! Thank you for your great videos ❤
What a fantastic video! I love love love how you go through the pattern in such detail.
Thanks Jay! I remember being a very anxious beginner knitter so I try to think ahead with these tutorials and address any questions or concrete that a new knitter would have!
love this! just completed my beanie! i used the magic loop method. this was my first beanie attempt and it was so easy to understand your pattern. took me just over 2 days to make.. i’ll be making beanies for christmas. thanks!
2 days! Wow! You’re a quick knitter! I’m so glad the hats turned out well for you!
this is perfect timing as i just got some new needles in the mail today!
One of the best teachers on the planet. Forego your morning latte and give her some support.
Thank you! I’ve just finished my first hat ever. And it was very easy to follow all your instructions.
Thank you for this awesome hat pattern! I was able to get the cast on first try. You're a great instructor!
So good. Just finished my second one. Such an instructive video and supercool "toque" when it's all done!
Love her! She’s sooo good and explains real well❤️❤️❤️
Such a pretty hat Davina!!! Love the red color too!
Thanks Kim! 🤗
The inspiration for this hat is a new reason why I love you!
Thank you! 🤗 I do love a bit of knitting history!
Your directions are so clear. .this may be the project that gets me to try circular needles, lol. . .
If you’ve never knit with circulars before then the big hat would be a gentler introduction: ruclips.net/video/23gmF0WFXdI/видео.html or the waffle stitch hat here: ruclips.net/video/xFpVn_X47sQ/видео.html
New knitter here. Not only am I a teacher and know a good teacher when I see one (you are amazing!!!) but I am a math teacher and will be showing my kids this year that knitting is math hahaha. I just finished the 8" of 1x1 and going into the decrease and after watching what I am about to embark upon, you make me confident I can do it :) thank you, Jeff
You can do it, Jeff! Thank you for your kind words. And yes, a lot of knitting is math 🤓
OMG OMG OMG I did it - I really knit something teehee@@sheepandstitch
Love this new video! Would you ever show the ending where you do magic loop on this same pattern instead of going to DPNs? I would love to see how that works. If you ever make a fun easy sock pattern to do, I would so purchase that tutorial too. Great content like alway!!!
I love the life aquatic 🥰 great pattern!
Oh the beanie is so cute and the tutorial was very well explained
Thank you!
Your knitting style is cool!
I'm enjoying your videos can't wait to start this project
YAY! You're back :)))
You’re a great teacher!!👍😊
Thank you! 🤗
Most Excellent tutorial! I bought the pattern. Thanks!
Bravissima! ❤ il tuo video mi è stato di grande aiuto. Thank you so much and greetings from Italy! 😊 🇮🇹
This pattern is amazing! I've made two of these already (one in red, one in yellow) and am currently working on a blue one :-) Since I like to double fold my beanies, I knit them to 9 inches in length before I start decreasing. I also found that if you want to upsize or downsize, to do so in sets of 8 stitches, that way the decreases won't be affected!
Thank you for sharing this pattern!!! :-) ♡
Red, yellow and blue beanies! Amazing! Thank you for the tip about decreasing 😁
Hi, you knitted to 9", i'm wondering if its ok with 2 balls of yarn ? Thank you 😊
@ I used cascade 220 (which is a worsted weight yarn), and used about 85% of the 200m skein ! so yes, 2 balls of yarn should be more than enough :--)
Hey, if I want to knit a larger hat, do I just have to add 8 stitches for the cast on? 112 for example. This will be my first hat so I'm just making sure I understand it correctly. Thank you in advance!!
Excellent video. Very informative.
Yay! I was waiting for a new video!
Happy to have this video for you! 🤗
Long time no see your video. I am happy you are back
Aww thanks! I’m so happy to have a new video out for you! 🤗
@@sheepandstitch
Your videos are so good because you explain it so well 😇 can you please make a sweater next 🥺
PLEASE do a sweater or like a top next 😭😭💗💗💗
HEY ! I was wondering if you already have, or whether you can post a video on how to read knitting patterns or knitting charts
I love your videos. I haven't knitted anything in years. I'm definitely going to make this hat. 🙂
Best tutorial. Alwayssss
Great video! I'm a beginner and have a very basic question. With the slip knot, does it matter if the part you pull to tighten is the tail end or the working end? Thank you
As ex Navy I do like it. A great site to learn, even an all thumbs person like me could follow, thanks for sharing. :)
You’re very welcome. Glad you enjoy it!
i have pretty tight tension so that last round was hell, turned out beautiful though! Thank you for this :)
Awesome!! Thank you!!
Yay a video
Love your videos, starting a project for January. Um might be a dumb question but what do you do when you don’t have enough of a tail and need to get the final stitches on?
How do you count the stitch in the alternate cable cast on? Do you count the initial slipknot or when you start the K1, P1 cast ons? Thank you!
I love this beanie! I’m a first time knitter and I have a question! I’m at the 8” mark and noticed that some of the knit rows going down, the yarns are being twisted. Not sure if I’m saying that correctly, but they aren’t straight? I’m using cotton yarn, what am I doing wrong?
Hello! This video has been helpful :D I just have one question tho, I am using a double pointed needles and I'm not sure how to proceed after finishing the 104 st of German Twist Cast On.
You explaine so good
I’m trying to send a picture of the Fisherman’s hat I just finished. Watching your video
If you have Instagram, tag me with the photo there! 😄
YAY A NEW VIEO!!!!!!!
Hey Davina, I just finished the hat and am a little unhappy about how uneven some of my stitches look... did you block your beanie in any way? Do you think it's even suited for blocking or will it just stretch out too much?
Can you please do a sweater/cardigan tutorial next? I’ve been looking everywhere, and can’t find a begginner tutorial
Just finished my second beanie using this pattern 🤗
It's midnight here 😅
Congratulations!! 🥳
do you have any baby blanket or baby clothes tutorials? thank you!!
Hi, thank you so much for the tutorial. If i cast on 100 stiches, how would work the decrease numbers?
Hi there - thanks very much for the tutorial and pattern. I wanted to ask - can I use DPNS only instead of circular needles?
Yes absolutely!
I just finished this pattern in light gray an dit turned out great! I like a good slouch in the back so I knitted to 10” before I started the decrease. Next time I might do the decrease rounds without the four even rounds in between to make the end less pointy. Do you think this will work?
Hi, you knitted to 10", was it ok with 2 balls of yarn ? 😊
How do we modify the number of stitches based on the thinness of the yarn? If I want to use a thinner yarn, do I need to add more than 104 stitches?
As I am creating this, it looks incredibly small. Does it stretch? (I only have about an inch hanging off the needles)
Same question here as a lot of folks, I started a hat that has more stitches than your pattern, it was a much thinner wool, and I am not sure how to calculate the decrease.
I love this! But I’ve been having lots of issues with joining the round. There is always a gap at the start of the round and the stitches look messy. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I googled it and tried doing an invisible join but somehow it still didn’t work. This is my 4th attempt 😭😭😭
Please tell me how many stitches to cast on please as cant find it x
Do you have any sock tutorials?
This pattern is exactly what I was looking for this week. Thank you. I have been experimenting with doing tubular cast on, finally got it! I had some beautiful aran, cast on 104 in 1x1 hoping to use a cable pattern. As I used the yarn, “the yarn talked,” keep it simple. Love your deceases. Going for it.
I love this but I'm looking for the one everyone is wearing that has a flat top instead of a point. I call them cop hats and I have an image. I'm sure it's a matter of when I end the decrease. And then do a three needle bind off.
I’m a beginner knitter, on round 4 or 5 when the pattern says rib stitch all the way to the marker why did u start with a purl and not a knit?
Great tutorial as all your videos, thanks for these! Only thing I'd regret here is you're not using the magic loop technique, so we have to buy DPNs. I will try this pattern but using magic loop instead.
Do you have another way to reduce this hat? I don’t like how loose things look from the passover. I like my things to look professional, and mine just looks amateur :/
I am knitting with a spoke will this still work out
Hello! I really appreciate this tutorial!! Stuck a little though the video jumped from decrease round five into final decrease round, wondering if I should be doing the four even rounds between the fifth and final decrease rounds?
“After working Decrease Round 5, knit the Final Decrease Round with no even rounds in-between.” I couldn’t remember so I looked it up on the written pattern, linked in the description 😁
@@sheepandstitch ugh I am sorry I felt like I read it a whole bunch a times thank you very much!!
@@sheepandstitch oh boy… I missed this part of the instructions completely and knitted 4 even rounds between 5th and final decrease. No wonder mine came out so pointy… 😂
Hey Sheep and Stitch! I want to give this project a try...
I watched your video on gauge and I’m curious if it’s the same when working in the round. This project says 35 sts/ 31 rounds = 4”/10cm in 1×1 rib.
Does this mean I need to knit a whole 4 inch long tube with circular needles/DPNs instead of a the normal square swatch?
If so... man that’s a lot to knit just to make sure I’ve got gauge😭
I AM using the recommended yarn and needle size, and it IS a stretchy hat... so maybe can I just skip on the gauge in this situation?
Any tips would be appreciated! Love your videos!
Sorry I know that was a lot! 😬
can you please knit a sweater for adult and child in flat needles
Such a great tutorial. I am a beginner and I have a question, how can I make the top of the beanie less pointy? I am planning to make a ski mask/balaclava using this pattern but the only thing is that the top of the beanie is pointy. I would really appreciate your help on this. Really hoping to get a reply.
One reader in the comments gave a tip on switching to smaller needles for a flatter look. Just check-in upper comments
How would I do my first decrease round with 88 stitches??
Can I cut the gauge in half? Like instead of 35 stitches and 31 rounds, could I do something like 17.5 stitches and 15.5 rows= 2” in 1x1 rib
Yeah! It’ll have a different look bc the yarn will be thicker but it should be roughly the same size
Hello
Thank you for fixing it. I would also like to buy the $4 pattern but don’t know where to find it. Thank you for your help.
Hi Sandy, the pattern is in the link in the description. Once you get to the page, just scroll down to the bottom of the page and you’ll see a “buy” button. Hope that helps! And thank you for your support 😊
I am still not able to find the pattern for $4 🥲
@@sheepandstitch I am still not able to find where to buy the $4 pattern. I have looked everywhere. Will keep looking
I finally found it. Thank you!
davina i dont have circuler needles i only have 32inches
Hey the ridge got twisted on my needles. How do I get it all on the same side, please?
Unfortunately there’s no way to untwist it after the fact. Before joining make sure the sts aren’t twisted. I go over this in this knitting in the round video: ruclips.net/video/mO-w_N5CFZk/видео.html
Well, what if you have a family of 23+ inch head circumpherences? 😬How does more cast on stitches change the decrease formula? I've never knitted in round or even decreased before, only knit scarves and crocheted socks 😕🤷♀
Thank you very much for this beautiful tutorial, and thank you in advance for any reply.
Ps, I happen to love old 'sailor fashion', if you can say that☺Ds.
You can cheat a little bit and use yarn that’s a bit thicker!
Where can I print out the pattern? You say in the video that I can print out the pattern, but I've hunted through the website thousands of times and I still can't find where to print it.
Hi the printable pdf can be purchased at this link: sheepandstitch.com/pattern/how-to-knit-a-classic-ribbed-hat-free-pattern-and-video/ Just scroll to the bottom of the page and you’ll see a red “buy” button
Could you please share pattern link again, as I searched the entire site for it and couldn’t find it. Link posted is broken 😉
I also can't find the pattern for the classic beanie
I’ve just rechecked the link and it should be working now. Sorry about that!
The link should be working now. Sorry about that!
how tall is the hat
i just made a blue scarf for my mom :)
would as complete beginer that has never before done anything remotely close be able to do this.?
I wouldn’t recommend this hat for total hat beginners. If you’ve never knit a hat before, start here: ruclips.net/video/DSuecYYS3bw/видео.html
have to follow your video as when I tried to get to the "free" pattern - did not exist at the address given for us to click on.
Oops! I just rechecked the link and it’s working now. Sorry about that!
Hi! Decrease round 3 instructions in the video are different from the ones on the website :-(
it miss the part that say to knit in rib to marker.
It's sad that men hats/beanies are mostly done in ribs😭
I can't embroider/duplicate stitch on them. I can do the rib and stockinette but it looks like a girl's hat by then
Ah well, this is great to learn either way. Can't turn down new knitting knowledge
Or you can switch to 9in circulars if you really hate DPNs THAT much
YAY! I was hoping the 9” circulars would work! 🎯
I swear she called the "videos" as "Kniteos."
If not, maybe she should. Excellent kniteos BTW.
ooh :)
Can use magic loop to do this pattern
Yes you can!
I’m probably overthinking it, but what does she mean when she says “even” rounds?
Hi! Even rounds means continuing to knit in 1x1 rib without decreasing or increasing. Just keep the stitch count the same and knit on. Hope that makes sense!
Perfect! I’m halfway through the rib section and can’t wait to try the new-to-me decrease! Many many thanks! 😘
My name is Reema would like to know how to shape the hat
Could you send Reema a copy of the hat psttern
What size is the needles ? Thelma
What is the purpose of different cast ons? Long tail cast on is all i know but i dont know why 😭
Some cast ons are stretchier (like the German twist cast on) and are better for garments that need stretch (like sock or hat cuffs). Some cast ons are sturdier (cable cast on) while others can be “undone” to reveal a live edge (provisional cast on). The long tail cast on is a great all-purpose cast on, but other cast ons just have other more specific functions. Hope that helps!
@@sheepandstitch Thank you that makes so much sense! I have only ever crocheted so this is all very new to me
👍🏽🙏🙏🙏🥰
It looks to me like the way I joined it in the round, it doesn’t look right
I'm confused. Your hat is a solid color but the instructions call for two colors of yarn??? Am I missing something?
No the blue yarn is for the hat knit in blue. It’s shown in the beginning. One yarn ball for one hat.
