Why WestJet Flew 20-Year-Old 767s

  • In 2015 and 2016, WestJet Airlines of Canada took delivery of four Boeing 767s, all formerly flown by Australian flag carrier Qantas.
Although the decision to buy a small fleet of used 767s may seem bizarre, they served a very important role for WestJet, as a way for them to test the waters of transatlantic flying.
Although all four aircraft are no longer with WestJet, it’s worth looking back on the past 5 years with these aircraft, and this widebody experiment as a whole.
This is the WestJet 767 story.

First I have to say 2020 has been a challenging year for the airline industry. How ever that said I originally booked 2 different dates back to Canada from London which were cancelled. My third attempt to fly was thwarted because I couldn't get a connection into Gatwick to make the connection for my 787-9. So wasn't impressed with their hub choice of Gatwick for trans Atlantic flights. I also wasn't impressed by the 5 plus hour lay over in Toronto before flying to western Canada landing 15 mins after my last connection of the day had departed resulting in overnight in Vancouver before a 45 min connection to YLW the next day. By contrast I flew the competition which was a 787-9 and was home in 15 1/2 hr compared to West Jet from Gatwick taking over 33 hr travel time. So no matter the plane if they don't reduce the connection lay overs from UK the route isn''t recommended.

Honestly, a 737 transatlantic wasn't terrible!

In the early fall of 2016 (?) my sister in law flew a 767 from YYZ - LGW. At the same time my wife & I flew from YYZ-YHZ-GLA on a 737. I initially wish we had flown into Gatwick as well. The thought of a 737 from Toronto to Glasgow seemed like a back ache in the making. Turned out the 737 trip with a 90 minute stop in YHZ was actually great. We had a nice dinner at YHZ. The return trip was really good as we cleared customs in Halifax. My sister in law’s s 767 had a mechanical problem and she was stuck in London for a week.

Westjet's newest livery is really nice but the idea of having a western replacement for Canadian Airlines International has been a strange experience. Sometimes the Westjet fares are too good to be true at least by Canadian standards but the real weakness of their system is connections. Either they are so tight that you risk arriving at the gate and are immediately boarding, or worse you missed your connection, or you wait countless hours until your second flight or sometimes they cancel your connection altogether. Retreating from Atlantic Canada means Westjet is no longer a national airline, rather it is just another well back of the pack Canadian airline. Its market share is a distant number two which positions it so far from any notion of competing for number one status. The 767's were its first foray into European routes. All four of them. That was a long time to wait to try to do what Transat does in superior fashion.

  • @rikright960
    @rikright960 3 года назад +2

Nice airplane. When the 767 came out in the early 80's, it pretty well spear headed the whole ETOPS process. Kind of ironic it was an issue to get certified with West Jet.

    • @joncalon7508
      @joncalon7508 3 года назад +4

It's not necessarily just the jet itself that needs ETOPS. The company and flight crew also need to be certified, and they didn't have any ETOPS routes to begin with so needed to go through the entire process to get the certification.

    • @afcgeo882

Interestingly B767-300ER still offers one of the lowest per trip cost amongst widebody aircraft these days, even lower than its successor the B787 due to its significantly lower MTOW and engine thrust.
The B767 desperately needs a replacement from both airbus and boeing but the NMA is nowhere near the horizon, only but a dream. The closest possibility is the A330neo, but unfortunately the A330-800 is overly capable and cost as much to operate as the larger A330-900. If only airbus would fit the GEnX-2B67 engine on the A330-800, that would have made a significant difference.

Awsome video, it will be very intresting how Westjet will develop in the next years. Longhaul demand most likely will be down for some time, but maybe they will also use some MAX with a true premium Cabin like Copa Airlines or FlyDubai.
Speaking about trans atlantic 737 flights of West jet, this would also make a good story for a video in my opinion. They were one of the first carriers to use 737-700 tu fly transatlantic even before Norwegian and later added also 737MAX flights before the grounding. Maybe tzey switch some -7 orders for the -9 with extra tanks and could fly routes up to 6500km+ :)

A scene from Frozen, which Westjet had on their jets.

    Why show a film of a Qantaa A380 instead of a 767?

I want to know which flights of WestJets are now permanently cancelled now that the 767s are retired. Or will those flights all move to the 787?

If COVID does not affect anything, then I believe that all routes will remain the same. But, some may be cancelled just due to low demand and or travel restrictions regarding the pandemic.

Canada has a deal where we take all of Australia's ancient Boeing legacy planes. As is.

I like that Westjet has the slogan “The spirit of Canada” on their 787s ... feels kind of like an Hommage to Qantas since they somewhat made the purchase of the 787 possible by initially selling their 767s

Its not. That slogan has been on there for a decade plus.

Too bad they got rid of such good work horses. The new stuff produced by Boeing, in my opinion, is questionable. I find myself picking flights that typically have older planes as I feel much safer in them.

I don’t know if we can call the 767 program a success. Learning experience would be more appropriate IMHO. Westjet showed how NOT to initiate a wide body aircraft into the fleet by doing almost everything wrong at the initial stages of the program. When they finally got their act together, it was too little too late; their reputation had been tarnished. It’s a good thing the 787 saved the day. Hopefully other airlines will take advantage of the lessons learned from the 767 debacle. Thanks for a very informative and interesting video.

Very good comment, and thank-you for it. Indeed, I think WestJet did not have their logistics well planned and managed before acquiring the 767's, especially when making the jump from short-haul to long-haul operations. I have a lot of speculations as to why the maintenance debacle occurred, and it has mostly to do with contemporary "management" operations prevalent among many organizations. Nevertheless, again, thank-you for your comment.

Thank-you Alex for keeping us Americans appraised of Canadian airline operations. We are hard pressed for Canadian news down here. Unfortunately, due to some health issues, I have not been able to review my “RUclips” videos for some time (not due to Covid, so you do not have to wear your mask when reading this comment - JUST KIDDING!). I just have one criticism, sir. Since I last heard one of your posts, your narrative technique has changed, and it is very choppy. It is not smooth flowing and sounds as if you stopped recording it between statements. Despite me enjoying your news, your manner of speech was a bit distracting.
Any, I do digress… Back in the mid 1990’s and early 2000’s, I did most of my business traveling, which included overseas flights to Europe. Except for a few flights, my trips were exclusively on 767’s, and the aircraft still remains my favorite wide-body. Essentially, it was just large enough so that loading and unloading passengers was still done most efficiently. But, there are so many reasons I loved the aircraft that are just too enumerable to describe in the allotted space.
I think WestJet was very wise to purchase the 767’s despite the age of that fleet. As you most likely know, the chronological age of an aircraft has nothing to do with its life cycle. Especially given the aerodynamic upgrades to the aircraft, i.e. winglets, et al, purchasing a used 767 is unbelievably less expensive than a new aircraft, even though it might require the periodic, overhaul maintenance in which the aircraft is practically rebuilt and other maintenance aspects. So, for many other reasons, I think WestJet did make a good decision to break into the long-haul market with the 767.
I have replied to others about the maintenance problems they had, which was a most regrettable logistical oversight on the part of someone. Without going into the details, that problem should have never occurred.
Again, thank-you for your post. I really enjoyed it, and it was very refreshing to view it after my long absence. I do look forward to your next video.

You failed to mention WS originally was in talks with Airbus for new A330s while they were talking with Boeing about 787s. Airbus had a better delivery schedule than Boeing, so Boeing promised to "find" them 767s to hold them over and secure the deal for 787s. It obviously backfired since the 767s were junk.

The 767's were a huge mistake by the then CEO and an example of his cheap leadership; just like the Plus seats and attempt to outsource cheap pilots for Swoop. They at least needed widebodies for their Calgary to Hawaii routes, so the excuse that they wanted to test the market was laughable. It was very "bizarre" that they took 4 old used aircrafts and maxed out the flying from 5 cities to London with no spares. How is that a trial? If it truly was a trial they should have only operated 2 a day instead of forcing all 4 into service with no room for error. With the strength of their network; and success of their Hawaii and Dublin routes, that should have been enough info to go ahead and lease or buy new 787 from the beginning.

Very astute comment, and thank-you for raising this point. Without going into details, there is no longer the art of leadership practiced among businesses these days (or they are very rare). Leadership has been replaced by management. In essence, bosses need to un-ensconce their posteriors from their palatial offices and boardrooms, and walk around where the blue collar work is being done. I could write a book on leadership vs. management, but I'm guessing that apart from my mother, I would not sell too many copies. Thank-you again for your comment.

These things were complete pieces of crap and WJ did little to appease the pissed off, stranded customers. Repeat issues, repeat cancellations.
They literally went with the bargain basement MRO facility and got exactly that, ships that were lucky to not fall from the sky - and were hangar queens as the rework on shoddy heavy maintenance ate into any potential profits.
Yes, the service improved years later, but boy, those first years were a joke for pax.
