I’m so glad she talked about the shrinkage that happens, the struggle of stretching your hair only for it to shrink once it hits humidity is so real for us 4c girls 🤧
It just HAIR. I’ve seen a lot of older Korean and Japanese women wearing afros. A lot of Japanese women chemically straighten their hair. Curly hair is universal.
@@greymatters7039 yes curly hair is universal but there are different levels just like what was shown on the chart which is why this comment specifically mentioned 4c hair and not just curly hair in general(and different racial/ethnic genetics can cause different things to occur even if each person has curly hair. example being white people's scalps with natural curly hair produce a good amount of sebum aka natural moisture and the hair stays hydrated and healthy whereas black people's scalps don't produce alot of oils which is why the girl in the video mentions all the oils and Creams that have to be used to keep our hair healthy and why black people can't wash their hair too often or it'll become dried out, brittle and damaged) correction: it's not that we don't produce oils but rather that it doesn't travel throughout/down the hair . And it may be just hair to you but not everyone feels that way and not every culture feels that way. There are some cultures where hair is a big part of the culture and cultural practices. There are plenty of cultures where how you style Your hair and how you wear your hair is tied to ceremonial practices, religious beliefs and even status. You can both acknowledge that hair isn't a big deal to you and still understand and respect that its important and a big deal to someone else Native American people don't let people touch their hair because they believe that whatever that person is carrying will be transferred onto them and carried in the hair/braids. Especially if it's negative energy
I love that they seem very sincere in learning about other techniques, and I love that she took the time to explain everything and allow them to get in there and try it out
This was a cool episode. They were so respectful in understanding afro-textured hair. Merlia was great at explaining the pure basics of natural haircare.
Damn, she's giving a whole masterclass. Seeing her speaking Korean like this is inspiring. Good that she's helping hairdressers in other countries to understand afro hair types , too. Though I personally haven't set foot in a hair salon since 2008 and never will - had enough trauma. I've got a lot of hair and, after even my mum was struggling with it when I broke my wrist, I've come to accept the only person who can deal with it is me.
My second youngest daughter has hair just like this, so dense and luscious. Learning how to properly care for her own hair from the age of 12 has given her pride and ownership over her head of curls, and it really shows! ❤

Towards the end, I just adored how softly and into it the guy with the blue shirt was with her hair. Like he was shaping it and touching it gently, most likely being impressed and intruiged by her hair. I love the respect. As someone with very very curly hair, it's nice to see someone respecting curls than just grabbing at it as if it's a foreign object
She did such a beautiful job explaining everything in a way that they could understand. She hit every mark perfectly, it is really nice that they were interested in learning and the fact that she reached out to them is so thoughtful. Enjoyed watching this 👏🏾
I just want to add on to what he said at 2:53! A lot of black people have to learn to style their hair on their own because you can’t trust that a salon will know how to style your hair, so you have to learn to do it yourself. Of course there are some people who know how to style black hair but it’s not very common, and you have to seek stylists out on your own or through word of mouth. Also, natural curly hair can take a lot of maintenance and work, so if you were to go into a salon every time you needed to do your hair, it would get time consuming and expensive! This is why I think it’s super cool that she’s so open and willing to teach! And thanks to him for being willing to learn.
Yup! Even some black hair salons don't always know how to properly take care of black hair. They'd know how to style it but not care for it. Like you'd get braids and they'd be so tight water or worse leaves your scalp and leave you with a headache and receding hair line or they'd straighten your hair and it look good for the moment but damage.
@@solarmoth4628 actually it's not so hard that people believe. The problem is that black people got so used to thinking that their hair was "unmanageable" and to straightening it, that they just forgot how to take care of it. I used to spend less time on my hair after I stopped straightening it than before. I also used less products and saved a lot of money.

Curly hair is super versatile and can stay in hair styles for days when wrapped and taken care of. I’d also like to note wearing Afro styles and puff styles can be damaging to the ends if you do them a lot. That’s why we use protective styles (braids and hair wraps to protect our ends) and wrap up our hair at night when we go to bed. Love your videos, I’m glad you and the team are so curious about different hair types :)
now i know why it's called as protective style. another thing i always wonder, how long you can leave braid without washing it or it can be wash without untangle it? i always watching how people do braid on internet and seeing they use lot of products and gel to secure it, it makes me wonder if they didn't make product buildup and or smelly hair after leaving braids for long time. sorry for my ignorance. i am an asian so i am not exposed to black people.
Indeed, it does take a lot of work to take care of our curly hair (especially with how thick it is and have a lot of hair, like me, my mom struggles quite a bit)
@@alzahrahabdullatiff9297 Your question isn’t ignorant💕. We can leave our braids in for 3-4 months depending on the style and how long someone wants to leave their braids in. Most ppl when wearing braids we only put jam on the braids while getting it braided and then put mousse and oils on our hair afterword. Most ppl use Grease, jam, and oils. build up depends on how long you have your braids in now you can wash your hair with braids in but some ppl do not and prefer to just leave the hair alone to let it grow and do what it does and put oils in to help also keep their hair protected. Me personally I do not wash my hair with braids in just bc it takes hella long for braids to dry and I don’t have time but ever black person hair is different that’s why certain products work on some ppl and don’t on others for my hair I get healthier and longer hair when I don’t mess with it while it have braids in( I’m also natural.) Natural hair products honestly depends on you curly pattern and if you have low or high porosity hair as well. Sorry this is long💕💕.
@@alzahrahabdullatiff9297 personally i leave mine in for a month, but i don’t use gel and many products while i braid, and i wash my hair regularly while i have braids in, it all comes down to personal preference. and your question wasn’t ignorant no worries 😊
Im a black woman who already knows all this stuff but for some reason watching her explain it so nicely in Korean has me hooked! hahaha I like how the hairstylist is so engaged and happy to learn. And she is so good at Korean. I hope she enjoys her time there!
I’m a black woman and ik it can be stressful/anxiety inducing to let others do our natural hair (hence not going to the salon, cause of the fear of someone messing it up & having to do the extra work & possibly weeks to fix it) so I’m glad she was able to let them work on their hair & learn! More stylists need to learn how to do black hair so we can utilize services like everyone else & be able to treat ourselves & have someone who can have a 360 view & be attentive. For me (and ik other black naturals) we know the back of our hair is harder cause you can’t see as clearly, & even using mirrors is trouble & time consuming so you have to settle with it probably looking not as defined as the front! But dang her Korean was great, & again I love her want & ability to let them learn because it’s such an interesting & diverse hair texture!

I think this is the kindest cultural exchange I've ever seen. 🥺😂 The explanation was so clear and thoughtful. As an American with a biracial child I feel like this has been the MOST informative and concise video I've ever found on the topic. Thank you. 💜

I love this video and all the positive comments! To someone's earlier point, this is a beautiful exchange of cultures! Also her Korean sounds amazing! I hope as I continue to learn I can be as proficient as her. Two things that I want to comment on as 4c thick hair person, knowing that this video is exposing people to kinky-coily hair who may have limited knowledge. We can all benefit from a professional trim at least once a year. With 4c hair it sometimes can be misleading the actual damage our hair is going through with styling, manipulation and detangling. The method she discussed is a good alternative when you cannot get to a professional stylist , but it's always good to have someone really look at our ends from front to back, either through shaping the hair in its natural state or through straightening the hair and then trimming. And when you encounter knots as she did don't rip the hair apart. As someone who use to do that, that technique can be very damaging. What we heard was the hair likely breaking or splitting. When I encounter knots like that rather than ripping the hair, a little water, a wide tooth comb and professional hair shears to remove the knot works well with less damage. Thank you Kiu and Merlia!
Jenn Marini, I personally don't trust many hair professionals with my beautiful Black Natural hair. I have been with my Natural hair now for 19 years. If I ever go to either a hairstyle or barber shop, the individual(s) have to have Black Natural hair or locs themselves to touch my hair. Or I will ask if the individual knows how to cut or style Black Natural hair, if they don't I leave. 08mar23

@@solarmoth4628 my goodness yes. You can’t even just go to any black salon. You have to find one that specifically specializes in natural hair care or deal with the consequences just like you mentioned. Even then, it’s “at your own risk”. I think this (and the fact that natural hair care can be pricey and time consuming) is the reason many of us do our own hair for the most part. I personally only go to salons when I’m looking for a silk press or trim/curly cut. I love to see stylists making this kind of effort to learn.
I love that you are so interested in continually learning about all kinds of hair. That proves you are in the right profession. From someone with completely straight 1A hair (that has weird course wiry bits that stick out randomly), I am jealous of both Marila's curls and her ease in speaking Korean.
I really love this. As a black girl with 4B type I watch his videos often but can never truly relate. I appreciate that they took the time out and were very receptive to learning about curly hair.
What made me so happy as a black girl seeing this is that he handled her hair with so much care and gentleness I’m so used to ppl grabbing pulling and pinching and pull yanking my hair to stretch it and snapping it off in the process, he also didn’t pull or tug a lot when brushing which can lead to fallout and broken hair strands this was refreshing to watch ❤❤

Parabéns pelo conteúdo Por favor coloquem legendas em português para nós brasileiros entendermos melhor o vídeo, obrigado.
Merlia did what so many of us type 4 hair girls who watch these videos have wanted to do but are too scared to do, because of how protective we are when it comes to our hair. We are greatful she took the leap. With the skill that he already has as a hair designer, once Kiu ssaem fully learns how to take care of, cut and style type 4 hair, especially bleaching and colouring it with as little damage as possible, every type 4 hair person in Korea would be booking with his salon.
This video shows so much respect. Even being hairdressers, they let her talk about her hair and listen carefully even being the "experts" about hair. Having the initiative to learn about coily hair is very cool too! Most hairdressers i went to in my life didn't know how to style my hair, a 2c-3a, and just straightened it. I imagine how it's like for type 4 hair, it must be even harder to find the right person to cut and style it in the salon.
I’m a hairstylist and have been watching your channel for a while now. I love this so much! She saw a teaching opportunity and did it in such a lovely way! I hope she returns for another lesson ❤ also she’s very inspiring because I’m learning Hangul and I feel so shy when trying to speak it out loud. I think I should start practicing more and not be so afraid of making mistakes.
I loved this for so many reasons. I just started learning Korean 3 months ago and I have a 4B/4C hair type. Merlia, you are communicating beautifully and gave me something to aspire to. It was heartwarming to see the authentic appreciation of cultural exchange. Props to Kiu for providing the open and safe environment that allowed for these three beautiful souls to not only give us coily hair lessons, but also provide sociology lessons as well. I wish you all well.
This is my favorite episode so far. I love that she's willing to educate hair stylists who aren't very familiar with this hair type. And you'd be surprised, even in America a lot of salons don't know how to style 4B or 4C hair. I'm also happy that you're willing to learn!
Hi I'm watching this from the US. You guys have know idea how happy this makes me 🥰 It's soooo refreshing to see people enjoying and appreciating each other's cultures, what we share, and admiring how we differ as well. ❤️
I need to ask her how she got over the fear of speaking/ making mistakes in Korean as an Introvert. Because she sounds so natural! Also thank you for this video~ I have 3c hair and I'm living in Korea. I don't think that the hair stylists here , would know how to do my hair, so I don't go. But now, I at least have you hahaha
if you can, find a place that is willing to learn as she did and you will both go on the journey together as your hair needs change. I feel like people forget that there's no set standard for our hair, it changes as we change and it'd be lovely to have a stylist beside you for the journey. All the best
being an introvert doesn't automatically mean you're shy. be confident, practice speaking alot and prepare for the area of topics you wanna cover for the conversation (here it'd be hair and textures etc). i'm also an INTJ that's taken an interest in languages and i just go for it lol, mistakes are normal and if you're constantly afraid of making them you will never sound fluent.
@@aaa-9399 I'm not talking about being shy but the energy drain that comes from interacting with people as an introvert haha. Also I can speak about various topics , since I live in the mountains most if my friends can't speak English at all so I have improved on that part. But literally just the mindset I hate th gut wrenching fear and sweats lol that I get while speaking. Basically on the outside I look/ sound fine but on the inside I feel like I'm gonna vomit. Maybe it's more of a social anxiety idk. But I'm so tired of it.
Merlia is such a gem! I'm really happy how Kiu 쌤 approaches learning about other hair types. Also, Sejin is too cute being so absorbed in his curiosity 😄
I would be so scared of their judgement. Instead I'm happy for their curiosity. It must've taken so much courage for her to do this but I'm so glad she did! I love this cultural exchange!💜
Nothing to " judge". I am Asian with straight hair, 1C. We all have different hair and skin based on race, it is good to understand about others. Most Asians are just curious. If some hairdressers turn you away it's usually because they don't feel confident handling your hair type.

. And it may be just hair to you but not everyone feels that way and not every culture feels that way. There are some cultures where hair is a big part of the culture and cultural practices. There are plenty of cultures where how you style Your hair and how you wear your hair is tied to ceremonial practices, religious beliefs and even status.
You can both acknowledge that hair isn't a big deal to you and still understand and respect that its important and a big deal to someone else
Native American people don't let people touch their hair because they believe that whatever that person is carrying will be transferred onto them and carried in the hair/braids. Especially if it's negative energy

우와..이 분 어학당에서 배울 것이 없을듯....
I’m so terrible at styling my hair and getting carpal tunnel made it basically impossible so I had to cut it super short. I wish it was easier.
Yes. Well said.
I was thinkin the same thing

Thank you for the explanation!😊 I've always wondered why😅,
now i know why it's called as protective style. another thing i always wonder, how long you can leave braid without washing it or it can be wash without untangle it? i always watching how people do braid on internet and seeing they use lot of products and gel to secure it, it makes me wonder if they didn't make product buildup and or smelly hair after leaving braids for long time. sorry for my ignorance. i am an asian so i am not exposed to black people.

It’s possible that her classes helped!
if you can, find a place that is willing to learn as she did and you will both go on the journey together as your hair needs change.
@@kmms4720 unfortunately i live in the mountains so only online classes are available for me , but they helped with confidence too
@@aaa-9399 I'm not talking about being shy but the energy drain that comes from interacting with people as an introvert haha.
Can we talk about how amazing she is speaking Korean? She is increadible
Everyone is curious but people of color don't have these videos about hair or anything pertaining to other groups, but simpletons could never perceive this reality nor could they see threw the lies, frauds, or truth! This video is only for clout, watch-time from views, and youtube revenue, it's only entertainment, basically acting for the camera! When the cameras are off its the complete opposite..elevated minds are not easily deceived!
@@Sunshine-zi4nq Except there is something to judge, otherwise our hair wouldn't be judged all the time the way it is lol
@@Sunshine-zi4nq OP is very rational to be afraid of judgement, doesn't matter if it's from Asian people or anyone else who doesn't have this hair type
@@simonneversleeps9018 ya but in Asia most aren't going to understand and I think to label that Racism isn't fair. I wouldn't go to Africa and expect them to understand or even be aware of my culture and what might be unacceptable or offensive to me but not them due to differences
I was nervous about this video but everyone was great! I was glad she corrected him by saying there were more styles that you can do with curly hair.
Yes I was nervous as well clicking on this video but you can tell she is a very intelligent lady who has a lot of confidence in her self and her hair. This is the type of 4c representation I love to see ❤️❤️ Marlia if you're reading this I think you did an amazing job
개성있고 다양하게 연출할 수 있어서 더 예쁘네요~ 한국에서 좋은 추억 많이 만들고 즐겁게 지내시길 바래요~^^
Please have her back because I love her personality and she will be able to show you more styles. I am an African American woman from Arizona and I’m also a natural hair girl as well. Me and her have similar textures. Would love to see more content showing natural hair in Korea.
I came across this video and I think this great. This is how the world should as a whole learning from one another. I think the young lady has a beautiful spirit and with that opened up there minds to what’s different about the different types and textures of hair in the world. People get it wrong a lot of the time. This video was very informative and important. I enjoyed watching this one. ❤
This Hairstylist is so passionate in His Job and does Not judge
I enjoyed this video and wanted to comment on how respectful they were of each other's cultural differences and the willingness to listen and learn in their curiosity ...I too think her grasp on Hangul is very enviable I hope to get to the point where I can speak the language with natural fluency too
