Just for people how don't already know...
Every MOSFET has an intrinsic fly-back diode built in. If you're going to add an external diode, make it a Schottky diode, so that it will conduct before the internal diode of the MOSFET conducts. A 1N400x is not fast enough.
Also, if you use a logic gate MOSFET, (Any MOSFET that starts with IRL, instead of IRF will do), you won't need a heat-sink for currents less than 5 Amps. You would need a 20V >= VGS >= 10V to fully turn on an IRFZ44.
Perfect when you are using a 12V power supply. The gate will open fully.
However, for supply voltages > 20V, you'll will need a 20V Zener diode (18V just to be safe) between the 200 Ohm resistor and the gate of the MOSFET, to ground, (From point marked G at 6:27, to ground), in order to protect the MOSFET's gate from exceeding the 20V maximum rating for this particular MOSFET.
Hope this helps some one.
Thanks for another nice video.
Thank you!
Is it possible to use something in place of the MOSFET? I have everything to make this circuit including piles of transistors, switching transistors, etc, but not a single MOSFET. Help if you can please.
Very well explained video. Very nice input and fine tuning from UFOhunter.
UF400x
The SB560 diode is good to put next to the transistor instead of 1N4001 ?
You never fail to amaze me with the wealth of knowledge you have in such a young age, and how you teach. Bravo !!!
I've watched so many videos on motor pwm controllers and this is undoubtedly the best one. Thanks!!
As far as what i know and according to the data sheet of all the 555 timer ic's, the absolute maximum voltage a 555 can handle is 18vdc.
Awesome work, man. Really, really good! 😊
Best explanation of the 555 PWM generation function yet. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
As usual really good video, I just thought I would share my circuit as I have set mine up slightly different. Swapped the 1nF cap for a 820pF (821), changed the pull up resistor from pin 7 to a 20 K ohm and added a resistor between the the two diodes opposite the pot of 220 ohm ( so as you look at your diagram the 20 k ohm resistor would link the vcc to the top of the right hand diode and the 220 ohm resistor would go from the top of that right hand diode to the top of the left diode). This way you have a frequency of 25 kHz (still good for PWM fan frequency) and a maximum duty cycle of 99.7% and minimum duty cycle of 28% so the fan should not stall. I have no scope so it is all maths. Hope this is useful. These are the formula; t1=time on, t2=time off, C1=timing cap from pin 2, R1=pull up resistor from 7 to vcc, R2=resistor from 7 and right diode to left diode then the left side of the pot is Rx and the right side is Ry so t1 = 0.693 * (R1+Rx) * C1 and t2 = 0.693 * (R2+Ry) * C1. Adding both answers together and dividing 1 by your answer gives the frequency. By putting the 20 k ohm resistor in even with the pot turned all the way the other way the resistance can not go below 20 k which limits the lower duty cycle to the 28% ((100/total time)*t1). The low resistor at R2 lets you go almost full power
Always a great pleasure to watch your tutorials. Thank you very much. You should have been my electricity 101's teacher...
Brilliant and just what I need right now - thank you
Bet tutorial , best animation love Ur videos dude..
Very Nice described by you. Nice Video. Keep It up always 😍

Clearly explained. Thanks.
Cool, please do more like this
Nice explanation of dc controllers
Awesome explanation, tank you guy
Congratulations for a great video.
Intro is awesome !, 200th Like and 2000th view . An awesome coincidence ! I took a screenshot !
Thanks dear brother u r awesome and so knowledge full for me.thank again.
Me encantan tus videos! Just discovered you through EEVBLOG...hope you become the next electronics youtube star!!!
Thank you!
Hi mate, i have question, if i have motor 200v, i used ac220v rectifier and get 310v dc. When i used pwm duty cycle is 50% i will get the volt is 155v?? Or just change the curent like on the video???
Still confiusd about this. Thank u@@ELECTRONOOBS
Great one!
love your channel
Thank you for clearing all ...isnt the diode be replaced with a pulldown resistor!!!
Verry good👍
Just curious if you think an lm358 would work better than a 555? Also would adding more IRFz44 in parallel increase the current I can use? This video helped me in one of my project binds...LOL
555 ic can drive those mosfets? As i was thinking that it will result in extra heating of mosfet due to only use of 555 ic.
Thank you that informative video! I Built this circuit but I've got some problem. For me the output PWM signal is still on high and the voltage be changing only 0.1-0.2V when I turning the potmeter. Anyone got idea what I've done wrong?
Could you build the same circuit, but for a voltage of 36 V? (Knowing that 555 only works up to 15 V.)
I’m interested in controlling the fan speed with a esp32. Should I pickup a 12V potentiometer based PWM controller and a digital pot or is there a better solution? My fans draw around 60W.
Damn awesome channel
nice video!! but i think hard about how to change the potensiometer with an ebike throtle sensor (hall sensor) . i want to apply this circuit as an ebike speed controler
Is there a way to get a lower level PWM signal like 3.3v or 5V ? In the video the PWM signal was at 12V peak.
Awesome! I need a small core transformer for the output and build a rural electric fence charger. Any idea what/where I can get it? Thanks
Which power amplifier is used for amplifying the sensor output followed by PID controller?
Great video! What would be your max current input and output in this circuit?
You are earning money rather than that of public service. There are thousands of channels who provide schematics with video. Just for freeeeeeeee
Hi bro! Can i use (irf540n) mosfect insted of other one
Can I use a 10 amps and 24 volt DC motor, (conveyer belt speed control motor) in this circuit. Both direction
i want to know one thing..554 timer's max voltage is 15 nad minimum is 5...how can we apply upto 28v ..please reply
Hi sir. Nice to meet you
I want to do same thing but by using FPGA Spartan 6 as we have project. can you please guide.
Thanks you sir thanks a lot😁😁
Very nice demonstration. I understand the PWM working but
I have confusion selecting the optimal PWM frequency. How to select a PWM frequency for DC motors.
I built it, but does it go to cero output value? the motor spins when the Potentiometer is at its lowest value. What can be done to have the motor not to spin when connected?
what is the handheld oscilloscope are you using in this video? I'm looking for a good handy one.. thks
Hello
how to variable frequency and duty cycle both?
Awesome
Hola. Cual sería la mejor forma de aumentar la corriente de salida o la potencia del controlador? Manejar un solid state relay? Gracias
hola, puedes usar un hcpl y un IGBT y controlas el hcpl con el controlador recuerda aliviar
Excelent explanation! By the way, what kind of the little oscilloscope did you used? Mark? Where to find it?
How about adding fan to blow some air behind the heat sink? Good idea or Bad idea?
Also. Does it work with 6v-9v small motor?
How can i change the frequency of PWM. What is best frequency for motor operation by PWM.
Dear Bro,
Don't we need a 10k with gate of mosfet to ground?
Sir please can you answer me a simple dc motor can move by using servo tester and MOSFET?
Is the operating frequency constant?
Can I use IN 4007 diode in place of IN 4001.
Another great project and concise explanation!
I was beginning to think you'd lost your banana until it appeared near the end!
I'm curious as to what's in the 'Time Travel Stuff' box, is it a watch and a train ticket? 😜
Pete Allum thank you very much! In the box there are portal guns.
Hi thank you for the tutorial but can I use the AC circuit with 220v?
This circuit is just for DC. AC power controller will be different. Search for SSR (solid state relay)
do reverse engineering the AC light dimmer..then you will know..
I did everything as you did, but when I turn my knob it only changes the frequency, not the duty cycle. Not sure what I did wrong.
what video editor are you using
Hi Can you know how connect or control the camera by using arduino............
Hi I want to control this PWM with "RF" Remote..How to do it?...please help
what kind of remote that you will be using?. if it an generic 433 mhz rf remote just connect the input of transmitter with an pulldown resistor. then the receiver also with pulldown resistor on its output then connect it to an mosfet. done !!!
Love your videos man! Also the banana for scale was a nice touch.
can i use lm317 answer plsssssssssssssss
the second resistor is 200 ohms?
7:14 Sir why frequency is changing now? It should just be around 27K. can anybody explain this to me ?
Waiting for the quadcopter video
The moment you said that you wanted a spinning table for showcasing your parts, I imagined turning the knob all the way and parts flying across the room.
Subs. Counter works now? Or is die?
how to generate pwm signal using op amp with triangle wave and ref voltage please
I made it and it works but my mosfet heats up a lot. Any help is greatly appreciated
can i use a 1n4007 diode?
Posteaza un videoclip in care faci sursa care o folosesti acum
What type of capacitors did he use and why?
555 Max Supply Voltage 18 volt
I clearly noticed that frequency is also changing with width of pwm. What's this ??
Nice😃. Only one question. What is story behind the banana
Banana for scale: Thanks!
is 555 timer automated application ? many thanks !
what is the freq of PWM signal??
What model is the baby oscilloscope?
DS203
i need to buy PWM for hydrogen production . hydrogen unit need 220 volt 2500 watt . i have 220 volt inverter . which bridge rectifier and capacitor should i use to convert AC TO DC . how to connect capactior . which PWM should i selected . how to select PWM . how to calculate it
how speed control of a ac induction 1hp motor
You will need a frequency inverter.
I can use a smd 555 timer and a bjt to make it more compact.
Would a 10k pot work
Its an amazing video. I am making this for my project and i need a bit of help, so is there any way I can contact you. Please reply
i can't seem to get a duty cycle of 0 to 100...
What is frequency.?
bonjour belle video possible de partager ton schéma merci
2oo ohms or kilo ohms ?
the 555 timer ic isn't working at 24v dc
If you use a 7812 voltage regulator for the 555 and from the same supply you connect the mosfet and motor it would work too maybe.
Don't forget me when you will have 1m subs.
28v? No!! The 555 absolute maximum Vcc is 18v!! (Read the 555 PDF) But don't give it any more than 12v since its output voltage swing can damage the gate of MOSFET!! Use a 1-watt zener diode or a 7812 to regulate the 555 part of the circuit.
I´m a newbie, so, someone has to explain me such things, and although the matter interests me since longer (one might then think I must already know everything), still this video had some new knowledge for me, so, thanks...
PWM-generators from ebay control frequency/DutyCycle but output solely 5-30mA... It would be hugely usefull to know how to amplify their pwm-output-signal, so that 100-200mA can be drawn... Would you please realise this project ??? Please Please Please !!!!!!!!!!!!! If I use yout suggested circuit instead, I won´t be able to know the frequency/DutyCycle without a better-quality-osciloscope, which would let my budget explode, and defeat the purpose... Those pwm-generators don´t show graphs, but communicate the set frequency/DutyCycle simply by showing nunbers on their lcd-screen, and are very reliable on that, so, no need to heck each of the thousands of different settings with an oscilloscope each time...
position of the two capacitors should be interchanged

I’ll use a BJT because my motor is low current.
Thanks for your videos - I'm a subscriber.... Where is the SCHEMA ? I went to your www.electronoobs.com/eng_circuitos_tut18.php it states working.... and I was able to click on PARTS LIST - thanks for that.
