Martin Miller I don’t get these new kinda troll comments.. the guy lost straight away by commenting ‘so what? Guthrie is better?’ Martin is right, if you’re looking at music as a competition then go somewhere else... It’s all about perspective and whatever personal music moves you.. The internet and especially the guitar community has become very sad and bitter
@Mark Guthrie Govan is a great guitarist, but there is no such thing as the "best", as an OPINION cannot be labeled as a FACT. You could have said "I THINK Guthrie Govan is the best" and left out the "so what?" as it was a significant part of the video that people may have missed. Mature a bit and have a wonderful day.
@@droiderp true words to live by... At a certain level there is no best... Everyone has something of value to offer, even it the phrase played at that moment might not be the most technically demanding stuff you ever heard. Musicality is what fits the music and there are endless possibilities that fit
Enroll at Berklee or MI, and practice your scales 8 hours a day. Then when you graduate and "make it" you'll be able to play to an audience of 50 at the famous Baked Potato in North Hollywood a few times a year. Awesome! :)
To those of you debating who is better, I'll just say that if there weren't a Greg Howe, there would likely not be a Tom Q. GH has overwhelmingly influenced modern rock-fusion guitar, and has been doing since before TQ was born
Tom breaks a string early on, has a chance to switch guitars, but instead opts to not interrupt the song vibe and moves forward anyway. Brilliance. Sheer incredible talent and musicianship and utter professionalism. And yes, all the incredible TQ legato goodness on an LP! Greg and Tom: superb work! cheers!
Greg as a musician and human is pure class. So many guitarists have appeared to "outshine" Greg but in the greater scheme of things, Greg's solos have been the most creative and mind boggling in electric guitar history. He jams for fun and it's not to try and outdo others...if I knew I was jamming with Greg, I would be ready to go ballistic!! Greg knows he has NOTHING to prove.
If you have loads of experience improvising over this kind of track with great dexterity and ability to recognise harmonies when you broke a string it actually forces you to improvise with such limitation and therefore forces your brain to be more creative and make the most out of what you have. Damn you Tom Quayle you've just proven another great theory.
Guys, do you realize how many times Greg has probably played over this track? You don't think you'd lose a bit of inspiration after a while? Especially since it's basically just two chords? Plus you gotta take into account that sometimes you just don't "feel it" on particular days. I've heard Greg do mindblowing improvs, but I've also heard ones where (to me) it seemed a bit uninspired. It happens to everybody. Btw, where can I get this track? It's pretty cool.
How many albums Greg Howe has? Think of it guys??? Compared to Tom Quayle but in this Generation Tom Quayle has melodic groove in this particular guitar jam?
Love Quayle playing the Paul. Both guys are monsters and it's not about who's better. When you're on this skill level, you can play better with 2 fingers than most guitarists can play with 4.
Why is it always a competition with you guys. Can't we just sit back and enjoy listening to two guitar players that are worlds better at improv than most people will ever be? Thanks for the video btw. I have this backing track and it's a lot of fun to play over. It's always interesting to see what top tier players will do with it.
Big GH fan from way back, surprised to see he wasn't doing a lot of his insane tapping and inversion stuff like on Introspection, I guess he had all that incredible stuff, pre - thought up, sitting down in the studio, Im' kind of new to TQ, and trying to play SOME of his stuff too, I will NEVER be able to go on endlessly like them,, both great players! Joe Average Guy, don't have a clue who they even are.. lots of less talented players are rich and famous.
1:16 utilising space in the form of silence to contrast against the sound. I was amused and disappointed to see that it came when Greg attempted to pass the Batton back to Tom! Great players without question. It is after all part of the phenomenon of the guitar Olympics!
nice!@@GregMichael yeah thats true he sounds good on any guitar and thats an obvious observation but its rare to see him play a les and like i said he sounds so good with it. cheers!
It's a backing track from the book "Funk Guitar" by Chris Amellar I think...go online and check it...might have spelled the name wrong but the backing tracks are played by an actual band and they're brilliant. Same think with his jazz jamming book, also played by a band...
Im sorry but no one has anything on greg's harmonic approaches and creativity not even govan he's always singing his guitar. Govan has such rich tone and clean playing but is a shredder at heart.
When I was younger I thought of it as more of a competitive thing who’s better who’s this who’s that it doesn’t matter who’s faster who has a cooler so now the only thing I miss is Having a live band as opposed to backing tracks the days watching Mike Stern and Jaco Pastorius a grand 55 in New York it was magic so the point I’m making is I’m oldI miss musicians playing with other musicians drummer and bass player is a keyboard player sax players they’re all great
Thing with Greg Howe is, all his licks sounds natural, feels like usual minor pentatonic but we know it isn't. Same thing with Jimi Hendrix, when he play weird notes sequences (like the solo in purple haze for example), it does add the colour of the song but also feels very natural. Seems like they knows something that others don't about music theory?
Greg broke the limits of shredding rock guitar, introducing new chromaticism taken from jazz, in opposition to what Holdsworth and McLaughlin -who were already in jazz-, did. That´s why all guitar virtuosos are in debt with them. The rest are simply fireworks...
Im Greg howe fan from eighties. Obviusly is not his better day. Tom Quayle playing more confortable, clean with better tone. Both are excellent guitar player to enjoy.
Nobody won, because it's not a contest haha. Tom's playing speaks more to my soul than Greg's, but Greg's is more "impressive" if that makes sense. Both fucking rule.
Both are awesome guitarists. Dude on the right uses his middle finger more than Howie. That's why it sounds like dude on right hitting more note in his solo. But Idk.
I feel Quayle should expand to maybe a 7 or 8 string guitar. I feel also that Rustey Cooley although perhaps a lesser guitarist did well on the video 'Rusty Cooley Shred Jam '... which appears to me to be the exact same progression.
people, please don't forget who is the father here... maybe govan, hutchings and quayle are mind blowing players, but they're all influenced by Greg's playing..
Most of you people only can judge a guitar player for a few videos on youtube, much people hear trough the eyes, oh his fingers move so fast, oh his fingers are so cute Lol, now go and listen some records by Greg Howe (I recomend from 2000 Hyperacuity) and grow up, the art of play a guitar is not only a vision thing, video kill the radio star, man Lol.
Haha... don't put Govan in the same sentence as the others. He is in a different league. To me, the others are just wanking. Govan would destroy them. Don't get me wrong, I love them, especially Greg Howe. I have all of his albums. But Guthrie Govan is in a different league when it comes to improvising.
Greg Howe played live shows in front of thousands of people. I know him personally and I don't think he can be intimidated by any player. I organised this event and invited both Tom and Alex to jam with Greg. He was just enjoying watching those guys and having fun. Post a video of yourself playing live and then come back to write your immature comments.
Most of you probably didn't even see it, but Tom broke a string right after his first solo and kept going amazingly well.
Mark What does that have to do with anything? Music isn’t about being better, guitar players have to drop this toxic, immature attitude.
Martin Miller I don’t get these new kinda troll comments.. the guy lost straight away by commenting ‘so what? Guthrie is better?’

You guys can't appreciate a guy adapting to a broken string. Wow, the US is descending into an antisocial hellscape.
I'm 45, but when I grow up, I want to play guitar like this.
I'm even more (a bit) younger. There's any hope for me too! :D
haha
Enroll at Berklee or MI, and practice your scales 8 hours a day. Then when you graduate and "make it" you'll be able to play to an audience of 50 at the famous Baked Potato in North Hollywood a few times a year. Awesome! :)
Now you 48, how is the result?
To those of you debating who is better, I'll just say that if there weren't a Greg Howe, there would likely not be a Tom Q. GH has overwhelmingly influenced modern rock-fusion guitar, and has been doing since before TQ was born
This ends the debate🤘👽 enjoy people thats how this dudes doin it right....ENJOY!
come on guys they are both good...it is like comparing michael jordan and kobe bryant..
that is true but doesn't make him necessarily better. The first wheel was not the best wheel. Genetic fallacy.
Greg has a unique style, imitated by everyone...he's still the clear portrait of this approach to soloing...
... together with Alan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale
Both of them are killing... If you're trying to figure out who's better, go watch boxing
I'm not trying to figure out whose better, but ima go watch boxing now, thanks for the recommendation :D
Tom breaks a string early on, has a chance to switch guitars, but instead opts to not interrupt the song vibe and moves forward anyway.
Brilliance. Sheer incredible talent and musicianship and utter professionalism. And yes, all the incredible TQ legato goodness on an LP!

Joe Satchton tom is tuned in 4th.. EADGCF

Greg knows he has NOTHING to prove.
theyre both amazing.... just outstanding
Sounded more like a jam than a cutting contest. An old legend and a new one, great to hear and see.
Sweet Jamming! Thanks Greg for posting this and being a great guitar/music educator!
If you have loads of experience improvising over this kind of track with great dexterity and ability to recognise harmonies when you broke a string it actually forces you to improvise with such limitation and therefore forces your brain to be more creative and make the most out of what you have. Greg howe and tom amazing guitar play ❤
Without Greg there wouldn't be Tom

TheFutureVirtuoso its on youtube dmin fmin dorian jam track
notable , cada uno en su estilo, exelente tecnica , almas nobles gracias por subirlo!!
cool to see tom play with someone he likes so much
I think Greg's past caring in this one... he's just going through the motions. Seems to enjoy watching Quayle play more.
I found Greg to be much more musical actually
I'm 60 and I still want to grow up and play like this!LMFAO!!!!😆✌🏻️so does Quayle! Ha Ha
Has anyone thought that maybe Greg was taking it easy on Tom?
Seems like mutual recognition and respect going on there.
If you have to view these videos as a competition, then watch X factor-if not, just appreciate 2 brilliant musicians performing together.
I never seen Tom enjoing this much on someone elses playng ... i guess he loves Greg too much
How many albums Greg Howe has? Think of it guys??? Compared to Tom Quayle but in this Generation Tom Quayle has melodic groove in this particular guitar jam?

Freedom flow thoughts and fantasies. Cool Jam.
I declare the battle even in a different way (each players won over the other in different areas of judgement).

Where can i get this BT bro?
Yeah I’m interested too! Where can we find the backing track??

Tom's tone is stellar! Thick & smooth yet full of harmonics. Both his tone and his style are reminiscent of Lukather.
I didnt think the day would come when i see my two heroes playing together. This was a GEM to watch!!
greg is mi favorite guitar player ,all he do is verry good
For fucks sake. No one 'outdoes' anyone! I like listening to GH more than to Quayle, but they are both stunning players. It's not a competition.
Tom breaks a string, is playing a real guitar and still kills it. Better tone too, but hey, Greg started it all back in the day
great tone of both.
Well, for some reason I am only just now learning of Tom Quayle.
Fucking awesome
1:16 utilising space in the form of silence to contrast against the sound. I was amused and disappointed to see that it came when Greg attempted to pass the Batton back to Tom! Great players without question. It is after all part of the phenomenon of the guitar Olympics!
Fantastic twu great by Rock Fusion,,
scottlernermusic.com/backings/Backing%206.mp3
For the people that want the backing track
Nice...fluid Tom and Greg seemed amused!
Wow....TQ broke a string after the first solo and still carried.... :)
Hahaha It's true 1:11 Tom Q. broke a string!!
SmzGuitar also checkout Alex Hutchings jamming with Greg Howe... :)
fretburns Amazing player!!
Tom absolutely on fire haha...
Tom sounds so good with a Les Paul
Tom sounds good on any guitar. Here played on my Les Paul 2005 through blackstar ht5 plugged straight into the mixer.
nice!@@GregMichael yeah thats true he sounds good on any guitar and thats an obvious observation but its rare to see him play a les and like i said he sounds so good with it. cheers!

HEY MANN Do u get the backing track?? can u rolle ittt please!
someone CAN tell me where to find te BACKING TRACK ??????????
they both did equally well !! great job guys!!
Jam pesada !
i must admit quayle is a phenomenal player, but you simply cannot compare him to greg. When greg plays, you know it is greg
i think you are right, when they play fusion they all sound like Greg, !
Look for "Funk Guitar Jamming" book+CD by Chris Amelar
Im sorry but no one has anything on greg's harmonic approaches and creativity not even govan he's always singing his guitar. Govan has such rich tone and clean playing but is a shredder at heart.
Quayles a badass, But Howe is 'LITERALLY A LEGEND!!!

Gotta punctuate, Bill.
Tom plays the groove, Greg floats over it.

Tom é de outro planeta véi
Quayles a beast
I still haven't tried this yet but the thought of it is confusing.
ghehehe i see the legend greg howe enjoying tom's lines
Tommy boy can run that legato like it's nothing.
Try it
You'll die trying
Im Greg howe fan from eighties. Obviusly is not his better day. Tom Quayle playing more confortable, clean with better tone. Both are excellent guitar player to enjoy.
I love Tom Quayle. Before taking shrooms I thought Tom quayle was better on this song but after I like Gregs playing here, its a lot more dynamic.
Tom is win!
Man Les Paul takes you in another planet :)
But who influenced Greg?
O cara errou tudo
Father & son
I prefer Greg's feel and timing, but then, damn I love both of them.
Perfect Tom but Greg more human !
the backing is tricky in term of u almost can play anything on it, lol :)
Tom has the better fusionistic vocabulary. Make no mistake, Greg Howe is a monster
Visions of sextuplets dancing in my head.
Fc greg howe
Nobody won, because it's not a contest haha. Tom's playing speaks more to my soul than Greg's, but Greg's is more "impressive" if that makes sense. Both fucking rule.
+Anthony DiBlasi i agree 100%
+Jonas Bylund I so agree too!!!
TOm Quayle playing a les Paul. Interesting!
On the evolutionary scale, these guys are from the shredescene era.
Both are awesome guitarists. Dude on the right uses his middle finger more than Howie. That's why it sounds like dude on right hitting more note in his solo. But Idk.
He had time in between solos to put on a new string
Tom looked nervous at the beginning - heed needn't have been...and he played even better once his string broke!
I feel Quayle should expand to maybe a 7 or 8 string guitar. I feel also that Rustey Cooley although perhaps a lesser guitarist did well on the video 'Rusty Cooley Shred Jam

...yeah... Than anyone.
Tun-o-matic bridge, so, not a big deal man ;)
Fusion Melodic Shredding: ruclips.net/video/YW3Qg3hLtL4/видео.html. It is a home video, but this guy is a great brazilian guitar player.
I never thought I'd say this but Greg Howe's phrasing is a bit sloppy in this video. He looks like he's frustrated too. Great playing none the less.
people, please don't forget who is the father here... maybe govan, hutchings and quayle are mind blowing players, but they're all influenced by Greg's playing..
Tom Quayle out did the Greg on this one hands down his phrasing was better
Hahaha. Monsters
Christ Tom.
i just feel bad that he had to play through a shit Blackstar....
Tom has a lot to learn from Greg
*LMAO* dumbest shit i've read today thanks for that. their both good.
i think for me Tom Quayle plays more better
Lloyd Benedicto , Maybe this time ...
Don't think I've ever heard Quayle with a shit tone
haha, thats what he gets for tuning to 4ths.
Haha... don't put Govan in the same sentence as the others. He is in a different league. To me, the others are just wanking. Govan would destroy them. Don't get me wrong, I love them, especially Greg Howe. I have all of his albums. But Guthrie Govan is in a different league when it comes to improvising.
It makes scale and chord shapes the same everywhere. It's pretty cool but not for me
Tom Quayle made Greg Howe sound amateur, o think he was intimated of TQ accuracy😁
Lots of unnecessary notes, too much, guitarist's these days make me despair
Yeah go listen to your bb king cds
