- The actor who rose to fame with "Trainspotting" and wielded a light saber as Obi-Wan Kenobi, is now starring as a '70s icon, fashion designer Halston, in a new Netflix series. Correspondent Tracy Smith talks with Ewan McGregor about how he prepared for the role; his familiarity with his character's addiction; and about returning to the "Star Wars" universe in a new TV series.

Sean Connery made me enormously proud to be Scottish, and Ewan McGregor seems to be becoming a more versatile version of Sean Connery, although, Connery was sexier by far, but what a talented actor Ewan McGregor is. I have just binged on that show about Halston, still to watch the final couple of episodes, and have to say, I was astonished at how well McGregor performed in that role. I do believe he has exactly the same voice as Halston, having seen an interview of the real Halston. I love how friendly and honest this interview is. Ewan has always been thought of, here in Scotland, as being very down to earth and approachable. and I think that comes across in this interview. I would recommend watching his performance in Halston, an American fashion designer that I have to say, I had never heard of before this series, despite being 56 years old now.
I mean honestly watching this guy performing a gay character so well done, even the sex scenes, was something I was not expecting at all!! He deserves any award for this accurate acting!!!
Thats because he's an actor first and a movie star second and this is why British actors win the bulk of awards.. A straight male American actor would have much difficulties in the role and a Black actor wouldn't touch it out of fear the Black community would drag him..
The one Black actor in the mini series Sullivan Jones isn't well known yet, so he can get away with a gay sex scene.
Mamadou Aziza You're making some pretty wide generalizations there. I agree that British actors can be pretty wonderful (interesting, for instance, that pretty much all the leading male roles in THE QUEEN'S GAMBIT, American characters, are played by Brits--and so well!). But I think your assertions vis-a-vis US actors are unfair, even if based in some reality. Also, things are changing on that front, and have been for awhile.

What a terrific actor, I believed he was Halston, what conviction. Even the voice was perfect.
Excellent. I was transfixed by his role in "I Love You Phillip Morris", playing opposite Jim Carrey as his love interest. Quite a revelation. Very funny yet poignant. 💁🏻♂️
I thought he was horribly miscast. I seem to be in a minority of 1!

I think Benedict Cumberbatch or one of the other regal British actors would have been better like Matt Smith or Robin Woods..
Although only Robin Woods and Ewan McGregor would dare take on the gay sex scenes and kissing a another man.. Brave.. I don't see any American straight male actors willing to to it..

Ewan took that role and wore it like a genius.
He was made for this role. I thought his performance was outstanding. He always has a twinkle in his eyes that brings every character to life.
Ewan Macgregor is as charming as he is talented and versatile as an actor. He didn't just play Halston, he became Halston. I love that he disappears into his roles. Mark of a true pro. And he actually seems like a nice guy too. Silver fox 🐺.

I made the mistake of watching 'Halston' around 10:30 last night when I originally intended to watch the first episode, then go to sleep by midnight. It didn't happen. I got hooked and watched all 5 episodes until 4:00 in the morning.
Great performance from McGregor! Of course, he's never delighted a bad performance. He's one of those actors who's automatically good in every role he takes.
Hope he'll snag another Emmy & Golden Globe nomination and win for his performance here.

Yes it took me about 30 minutes into the first show to realize it was Ewan McGregor. It took my friend 2 episodes LOL! What a thoroughly enjoyable experience to witness this performance and to go back in time to the later disco era NYC!

McGregor was the best part of the prequel SW series. He was perfect as Obi Wan.

one of my favorite actors..and honestly, there were times during some of the scenes in 'Halston', where Ewan disappeared, and you felt like you were observing Halston in real time. It was eerie.
I’ll never forget being a teenager in the theater with my friends the moment he began to belt out those notes in Moulin Rogue, after only seeing him in Trainspotting before that. What an amazing talent. We all shrieked with delight. 😂

Just watched Halston. Ewan Mcgregor was fabulous. A line from Halston that stands out for me was when he had his first angry, friendship-ending argument with one of his best friends and after she stormed out, Halston asks his lover, "Is it the cocaine"? He thought he could stop before it got out of control, but it was already too late.
I’ll never forget seeing Evan first time at the indie theater, in Trainspotting. It’s been so great to see his career unfold and the longevity. He also nailed this role, I am obsessed

While the Halston family may not be happy about this Netflix venture, I am old enough to have been there when Halston was king. Over the years from his fall from grace to his unfortunate death from AIDS, the world seemed to forget about this legendary designer they once worshipped and now, due to this production, Halston is reigning supreme once again.

I stumbled on this limited series i was going to terminate it after 10 minutes and some how i kept watching and was blown away with the performance and the story. i binged all 5 episodes and told several friends and family to download it

He was so zany in Birds of Prey (and always liked him in Ghost Writer). Has many sides beyond young Obi-Wan.
Oh yeah, I think Obi-Wan is probably one of his least interesting roles (no offense to Ewan or Star Wars). I loved him in Trainspotting, Shallow Grave (an EXCELLENT oldie!), Down With Love and others.

He's brilliant. Ewan can play really different characters. For example, Velvet Goldmine, Salmon Fishing in Yemen, Young Adam etc. It's hard to believe it's the same actor.

I was a young woman during the 1970’s and remember all these events. I wasn’t all that interested in re-visiting this era, but I watched it based on my admiration of his acting. He did a great job!

There are several lesser known films he made, definitely worth watching if you haven't already! Shallow Grave, The Pillow Book, Velvet Goldmine, to name a few. Not that the more popular ones aren't great, he always chooses his projects wisely. Love him!!!

Yeah I am glad Ewin was able to shine and get the recognition, I watched his travel series Long Way Up, Down, and Around and he seemed like such a cool guy, and was dogged by the Star Wars fame, I am glad he was able to show his range. Good for you Ewin, well done, amazing acting!

I watched all episodes Ewan was brilliant as Halston and im old enough to remember the brand. Sad he lost his fashion house. But still Halston was a very innovative designer.
