Indian Scout Bobber ODI Vans grip install

  • The stock grips on the 2020 Indian Scout Bobber were not comfortable in my opinion. This video walks through the process of removing the old stock grips from the Indian Scout Bobber and replacing them with something familiar to anyone that grew up as a gen xer, in the bike or skate scene. The grips I chose are the Vans grips from ODI. I’ve installed them on one of my vintage Haro Masters and like the feel of them so why not try them on my motorcycle. They are only 20 USD so I felt they were worth the risk and I am very happy with the results in both look and feel.
    The procedure is pretty easy and outlined in this video.
    Thanks for watching!

    For anyone else wondering, I read that when you order the 7/8” grips you receive a 7/8” for the clutch side and a 1” for the throttle side. Likewise, when you order the 1” grips you receive a 1” for the clutch side and a 1 1/8 for the throttle side. Hope this helps.

    • @MessyGarageBMW
      @MessyGarageBMW  Год назад +1

      Yes, the throttle side is larger for the diameter of the throttle tube. For the scout platform, you want to go 7/8

    Did you try using an air compressor to remove the grips? It's always worked perfectly for me and only takes a couple minutes....and you save the original grips as well.

    • @MessyGarageBMW
      @MessyGarageBMW  2 года назад +2

      Yes I did try that and didn't have luck (mostly due to the pressure and not having a good nozzle on it at the time.)
      I was never going back to the grips so it wasn't a huge issue. I have gotten it to work in the past though.

    • @MessyGarageBMW

      Yes. You will have to take a razor blade and cut the ends so you can bolt the mirrors back on. The rubber is soft so it is very easy.

      @@MessyGarageBMW well, I spent the last 45 minutes installing my new grips(found a pair that already had the end caps open at my local bike shop) and had no issues, even the throttle grip came right off. Thanks again for a well done video!! Keep up the great videos!!

    I have a question, when you removed and installed back the throttle tube is it really just a clip on or do you have re threads the throttle wiring on the control system?
    I just received the vans cult grips for my scout bobber 60.

    • @MessyGarageBMW
      @MessyGarageBMW  3 года назад +2

      It really is easy. Just slide it on the bar and into the throttle control and if will slide and clip into place. Hard to describe but incredibly easy and you'll see what I mean once you take it apart.

    • @MessyGarageBMW
      @MessyGarageBMW  3 года назад +2

      I had a similar feeling in my hands and this did help. Another thing to look at is your bars and if you are leaning on the wrists with the stock bars. Mine came with 10" apes so it is more comfortable on the back and wrists. That is a long answer but the short version is yes these did help me for sure.

      You need to get the grip off of the throttle tube. If you don't cut it you would have to work harder and may end up breaking the throttle tube and have to buy another one.

    • @MessyGarageBMW
      @MessyGarageBMW  Год назад +1

      These are certainly more comfortable than the stock. A bit softer and stickier but not sure if they are thicker. I've done a full day in the 1920 seat. It is more comfortable than it looks but it is not a road sofa. I think the wide seat allows you to shift positions and stay comfortable longer.
