I've loved this band since '...Pilgrams', and was lucky enough to see them last month at Camden Underworld ... had no idea they were sooooooo huuuuuge back home. Brilliant band.
Haha. Great band. Still around I see. I met these guys way back in Denmark after an outdoor concert together with the people from Medley Records (Michael and Paul). Was working for Music&Media and Billboard at the time. Good to still see them rocking.
Partly because D-A-D is an abbreviation of "Disneyland After Dark", now *WHO* do you think could have a problem with that name? They broke big in '89 with the single "Sleeping My Day Away" and the following "No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims" album, however their budget for touring in the US was pretty made 80 % because of their label having to lay in legal tussle with Disney, and lost. The result was a much shorter tour in the US, with only about 10 concerts in total (despite these concerts getting good reviews and all of them sold out), which of course isn't exactly great for an up-and-coming band. Furthermore, as "Sleeping My Day Away" was released as a single, the b-side contained a song, that to many felt like a stab at the rights to carry firearms (which it was). The song is now nearly impossible to find anywhere because of this. In the afterwaves of the very short (with nearly 20 cancelled shows, due to the budget being cut) tour, Disney also proclaimed that they felt "This band, who is not affiliated with us in anyway, is making people think negatively about our name." At first, the band was only allowed to use the abbreviation in the US, but only about a month after, the ban extended to nations with a Disneyland resort. That ban still stands today, as silly as it may sound. Another factor, as stated by the band itself, was that they weren't actually prepared for how big things suddenly got; the extensive European tour-program and the amount of attention they got in the US (as Warner music was really hyping them on, plus there was a wave of European culture being popular and "in" at that time in the US) took it's toll on a relative young and untested band for the big and intense American venues. In hindsight, despite getting blocked by Disney, the band's lead singer Jesper Binzer have said "It was probably better for us as a band, because we were under a lot of stress, and we were often close to getting into fights with one another between the shows." He concludes that he thinks it to be doubtful, that the band would be around, had they gotten big back then. That doesn't mean that D-A-D isn't popular, as glam/hair-rock/metal it is a bit of a corner in terms of genre, but it's a corner with very devoted and grateful fans. The band have large groups of fans in Japan, Germany, France and England. And until Volbeat came about, D-A-D was the best selling Danish band outside of Denmark.
D-A-D is returning to the United States in 2013 after over 20 years for a handful of select shows. Two consecutive headlining shows will be in New York on Saturday, March 9 (at Revolution in Amityville, Long Island) and Sunday, March 10 (at The Studio at Webster Hall in NYC). Info and tickets on the events page at streetlight circus dot com.
