I absolutely LOVE the dedication of Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee to their relationship. I adore seeing them together. On a different note, the teenage boy, Vance, irked my last nerve and the deputy's wife - I've got no words.
Ossie Davis was not only a legend but also a WWII Vet. He enlisted in 1942 at Ft Benning and served in Liberia with the 25th Station Hospital, he was honorably discharged in 1945. While in the army he also wrote and performed for the troops entertaining them, a true class act.
This was a good movie, I've never seen this before. Kyle Johnson who played Vance also plays Newt in The Learning Tree which is one of my favorite movies.
I really enjoyed this. I only came to see these actors toward the end of their careers so I started looking up old shows and moviesI have developed an appreciation for the movies that are older...the actors had to rely on skill and ability and not the technology that the performers rely on during our era.
I'm on an Ossie marathon: I'm Not Rappaport, 12 Angry Men, and Evening Shade. Next up, Ruby Dee in The Incident. Brenda Sykes (also from "Skin Game") was very pretty. Moses Gunn was "Carl" from Good Times. I recognize Kaz from lots of 70's tv shows.
After watching this movie, I get the impression that it was a de facto pilot for a potential TV series. It appeared that it could have worked. Ozzie Davis was strong as the lead character and Ruby Dee would have been good in the supporting role. But I suppose that because it was 1971, network execs didn't think a show starring a black man and woman in a serious role would have caught on with America's TV audience. A shame because I think it would have become a hit.
joe: The '70s is when more and more black actors appeared not only on TV, but in starring roles in movies. Never heard of this one, wouldn't mind seeing it, though.
@@alondathomas293 That's true Kirk, but this film was released in the early 70's just at a time that blacks were starting to appear in starring roles on TV and when the blaxpliotation movie era began. But this was a DRAMATIC starring role for both Ozzie and Ruby. That said, I'm just speculating that TV execs didn't think the American viewing audience would accept and respect blacks in serious roles at that time. Yes, at that time Flip Wilson who had the number one show on TV with a comedy hour of that name, and Sanford & Son comedy sitcom was starting to become a hit, but this show with Ozzie was intense drama. Just speculation on my part.

thanks for posting good movie and shows thier's good and bad people in all parts of life and that people can change at times- and it can be hard to look outside a box were you have been rase a certain way -
How close was the Gregory woman to Janet Wilder and Larry Walters? Wasn't she in her house? Was she 100 feet away? 150 feet? I wonder how clearly she could have heard what was being said, and how could she determine a rape was going on? Alma couldn't see what was going on. Perhaps you should be less judgmental and stop with the shame.
But this a racist town where you are either on one side or the other and in this case blacks are not your side if you are white. That is how racism works more often it is the women who are more racist then the men.
this is typical behavior for Americans, does anyone remember Kitty Genovese (March 13th, 1964) beaten and stabbed to death while 38 of her neighbors watched/ignored her cries for help, I agree "apathy" in the case of murder, should be a criminal offense

The Sheriff is a good made for TV movie, with a great cast. Ossie Davis as the sheriff keeps things together, while his son and the father of the rape victim both flip out. Ross Martin, two years out of The Wild Wild West, is the rapist and a slimy character. The wife of the deputy played by Linda Day George does not want to get involved, but finally realizes her testimony will be the only thing that puts the rapist away. The Shreiff was well made and a believable story.
I remember seeing this movie when it first aired. Back in the 70's ABC would air its "Movie of the Week" and this was one of their better films. Also, the movie was a good pilot for a TV series. They should have made it such.
Once I noticed that ossie Davis was in the lead of a early 70's crime drama, I had to give it a look& to my assumption,I was pleased :-) performances in rowdy Harrington Gladiator and spike Lee Jungle fever branded me a fan of Davis work,it's theater captured by a lense,is the best way to describe his craft in my humble opinion. Just that characters morals& ideas is a tailor made fit for more. Hollywood and TV could have been so much better if racism didn't exist, we could had Bruce Lee staring in Kung Fun and Ozzie Davis and Ruby Dee starring in their own series The Sheriff.
It was actually a "one and done" TV movie - though it does have the feel of being a pilot film for a proposed new TV series. (ABC must have been running such films in "Mod Squad"'s time slot - and one other show, besides - during the summer of 1971.)
To my knowledge, because I experienced it, Macon county Alabama had the first Black sheriff. 1968, named Luscious. Black mayor too named Johnny Ford arrived in 1968 accompanied by his white wife. Matter of fact he's still mayor today. How could that happen? Black town, Black HBCU and Black schools and businesses. 1968 was EVERYTHING!! Hippies, music and love. We didn't have time for hate. Most who came out of that town and went on to to become very successful people known around the world. Quite a few scientists and engineers as well. When intergration came through, they sent about 3 White kids to our high school because we had a choice as whether to bus to White schools. We had a few Black students whose parents bussed them out but we had 3 pretty great schools and all Black teachers who also taught us Black history, so we liked things just the way they were. The new kids seemed surprised that we didn't think anything different of them. Just ordinary kids as far as we were concerned. Yes there was KKK incidents in surrounding towns especially at night but ours seemed safer to me as a kid. I miss that time. Most special period in my life and memories will always make me smile. And now, here in 2020, we are going through more racism than I ever experienced in the south. I don't think America will recover from this evil and we will never surrender to those that wish us harm. Never again.
Correction, not the first...there were Black sheriffs in Black towns after Reconstruction in the 1870tys. Also in Tulsa Louisiana in the early 1900s when Black folks became so prosperous it became known as "Black Wall Street". The Whites became envious and burned it down.
