I live just 6 kilometers from the Afsluitdijk in Witmarsum on Frisian soil. After driving across the dike more than 100 times to and from North Holland, it had become relatively monotonous. However, this upload/video has made me appreciate the Afsluitdijk once again. I have the utmost respect for the fish migration river being constructed on the Frisian side. This project will allow millions of fish to return to inland rivers, where they will lay their eggs in freshwater. The fish migration river and the rest of the dike is nearly complete, and every time I cross the Afsluitdijk, I make it a point to check on its progress. Just by seeing the Afsluitdijk for real, you understand how huge this dike is.
My grandfather was back in 1947, 1 of the first 11 ANWB (AAA) roadside technicians. They rode Harley Davidson sidecar bikes, which had been left behind by the Canadians after WWII. My grandfather drove several times a day, from Zurich, place under Harlingen and driveway to the Afsluitdijk, through to the Vlietermonument on the dike and then back again. A ride of about 80km (49 miles) At that time, there were no double separate lanes like today. So turning on the dike was still possible back then. I still have photos of my grandfather in uniform, on his Harley Davidson ❤
I still remember the motorcycle with sidecar. Much respect for these mechanics. It was in the wintertime when our Morris Minor broke down on the Afsluitdijk it was freezing cold and the ANWB mechanic came on his motorcycle with sidecar and still had to work on mijn dads car. Chapeau!
Another important name is Jan Adriaanszn Leeghwater. He made new designs for windmills and in the seventeenth century he turned big lakes into polders, like the Schermer, Purmer, Starnmeer, Wormer and Heerhugowaard. He also was hired to pump lands dry in Germany, France an England. He died in 1650. Two hundred years later, in 1852, the Haarlemmermeer was pumped dry with a few huge pumping stations, one of them named after Leeghwater and still functioning to this day. In the never realized plans of Leeghwater himself, two hundred windmills would have been necessary. Airport Schiphol lies in fact on the bottom of the Haarlemmermeer, the name Schiphol dating back to the 15th century.
i remember my granny's storys, my grandfather worked on it, it was also a depression in NL this made lots of inner coastal cities safe, and work ( Money ) for ppl. but in hindsight, knowledge for further project. and my dad worked at the eastern scheld. what a difference my grandma said. after seeing it all. all those machines.
18:11 the image on the screen doesn't do it justice, yes there is a road, yes there are cars on, but driving on it... Tht is a whole different experience. I am not "shout of the rooftops Dutch proud" but I feel it when I drive from Friesland to Noord holland and back when I visited my mother who lives on the other side of the stretch of dam... I live in Groningen, she in Noord Holland, it never ceases to amaze me. A village on it, yes, defensive bunker complex on it, a camping site with mobile homes and caravan places, a jacht harbour, a gasoline station, a restaaurant, on both sides immense sluises and vaults and ofcourse, we are Dutch :) a bicyclepath the whole length
Sea levels do not rise... coastlines have been where they where thousands of years ago... if they did..why do the rich and famous still buy property there?
What kind of crazy argument is that? Do you truly believe rising sea levels means large swathes of land will suddenly disappear and not bit by bit? Aside from some outliers like Florida which is disappearing at an alarming rate that just doesn't hold water. Also, coast lines change all the time, they can't be the same over many thousands of years, which shows your ignorance on the subject even further.
What are you talking about? There is literal live monitoring 24/7 That shows a rising in the sea level. And in the netherlands we are consistently checking and improvingour coastline to keep up with this.
Hans Goedkoop always has good documentaries.
Highly glad you liked it. 😊
One of my favourite historians/documentary makers

I live in the south but I crossed the Afsluitdijk a number of times, once even by bike, and it never ceases to fill me with awe ...

Do you remember which year that was?
I could have been my grandfather 😊
In the Afsluitdijk monument was engraved: "A vital people, will build its future". How cool is that?

De Nederlandse en Belgische kustlijn zijn continue opgeschoven landinwaarts. Hele steden en dorpen zijn verdwenen. Dus sla geen onzin uit!
Onnozelheid siert geen mens.
