This is essentially the bootleg of Don Doko Don 2 that had Mario and/or Luigi placed over the dwarves, but NOW it's got more of an entire Mario overhaul, in terms of characters and their graphics.

now all we need is an overhaul of the adventure island spriteswaps, kung-fu mari, the kid nikki 3 spriteswap, the joe n' mac spriteswap, and the funi grandpa game, and our lives will finally be complete

But, this would be the 4th game where you actually fight him. The other 3 being Super Mario Land 2, Mario & Wario (Japan only), and Wario’s Woods.

@@dmcmusiclover2995 The reason why I “switched” them, is because I prefer Wario over Bowser. Wario is my favorite baddie ever since he first appeared in Super Mario Land 2.
@@Ivanegarcia I see what you mean. I think Bowser is perfect for the final boss of a Mario game. I don’t know how Wario would act like the evil wizard of Don Doku 2. Usually, the main antagonist is the final boss of a video game. He or she could also be the protagonist’s arch-nemesis. Wario is Mario’s rival, but not quite his enemy; I think Wario’s nemesis is Captain Syrup. I mean Wario is the hero of most of his games and even was a hero in Super Mario 64 DS.

This romhack add "everything" based in mario games, and sprites done right
I like how this bootleg didn't just slap Mario's sprite over whatever the main character of the original game was and called it a day. They actually went all out with the theming.

Looks to be Don Doko Don 2 for Famicom. After I read your comment I looked around a bit and I think thats what the base game is. The hack and the original both look pretty good to me

the pirate scene has plenty of examples of games that blur the line between the two. The Contra series for instance mixes in original games with ROM hacks and even some ROM hacks of official ROM hacks (in the case of Contra Force being renamed into Super Contra 6 when Contra Force itself began life as a title called Arc Hound)
