  • Almost all musical instruments fall under one of three categories: string, wind, or percussion. Each type of instrument relies on a different vibrating source of sound. For example, string instruments rely on strings, and wind instruments rely on a reed, lips, or flutter. Watch as we discuss musical instruments in more detail with examples in this video.

i know nothing about music so please be patient with me. if these different methods of music instruments are essentially doing the same thing, ie creating sound waves through vibration of the air, can you rig a string instrument to perfectly mimic the sound of a wind instrument (and vice versa), or is there more going on there? and if so, in order to do such a thing, would the instrument require some ridiculous design?

Well, the difference is the material (wood, metal, type of string, etc) and how the sound is produced. A clarinet is played by air winds, a guitar by plucking a string. So essentially, the air is squished through the different holes in the instrument vs the string vibrating.
