I've been looking convertibles over and over again and I still don't see how the buyer retains any risk. If the company does poorly the buyer holds a bond, if the company does well the buyer now holds shares. Either buying nothing but convertibles is the perfect no-risk strategy, or its some kind of a trap for investors to generate cash for a company that ... doesn't intend to pay it's debts. What am I missing here?

Your question isn't clear . however I'll try to answer it the way I understood it. Convertible bonds have lower coupon rate than regular bonds and thus will provide low interest(income) to the holder . It a plus side for the company because it has to pay low interest rate than on regular bond. similarly its low coupon rate is counterd by the fact that the holder can convert it into shares, which is an advantage for the holder too because if the share price increases then he/she can convert them into shares ( number of share is predetermined) . So both parties have advantages. Company has advantage because it pays lower interest on convertible bonds and the holder has advantage because he can convert it into shares if the situation is favourable. And yes bonds are the safest investment opportunity for any individual but on contrast they only get fixed return . While stock holder bears much more risk but his return can be unlimited. Moreover during liquidity the bond holder gets his money back before stock holders which makes bond even more safer investment. Bond are for passive investors who just want fixed return with very minimal return . While stocks are riskier but on the bright side we have seen investors in stocks being millionaire overnight too but it's never the case for bond holder.

Sir u can't buy a convertible it's a feature which comes with bond the bond which can be converted into share is known as convertible n if u need safety of investment then it's better to invest in bond becoz it's a debt n as we know that bebt are (interest) paid first than dividend or u won't loose money
