    Big shout out yet again to 'Gary From Birmingham'. The man has taste. I'm glad he didn;t pay $6000 for one of these though! I kinda get 'it' even after a short period of time with his 17.09. It looks like a Ming, has quirks I have not seen anywhere else, and clearly, rock solid residuals. Will I be setting an alarm for their next release? Doubt it, but I'll happily bnorrow another from Gary in the future. Cheers, Jody

    Thanks again for reviewing my watch Jody and interesting to see the comments already 😀 There's something about this (and other Ming designs) that really just appeal to me, I think it's the fact it's unique and has an almost futuristic "Tron" kinda vibe. From first wanting one to then actually buying it was over 15 months so I certainly wasn't buying it based on hype or scarcity. Overpriced? Probably, but I'm still very happy to own it.

    I have one of these! I bought it direct from Ming as a milestone birthday gift to myself. I was captivated when I first saw the pictures online and decided to go for it. It’s easily the most expensive watch in my collection (by a pretty wide margin) but I just love it! I love that two-piece dial, and the sense of depth the indices on the underside of the sapphire give it. I love the way it wears and how it kind of feels classic (the size, the guilloche pattern on the dial) mixed with modern (it does have a bit of a Tron vibe when it glows). And I love, as you say Jody, how it won’t be mistaken for anything else…and if you’re a total watch nerd (and maybe only then) will you recognize it! I get it’s not for everyone (which might even be part of the appeal), but for me, it’s one of the prides of my collection. Thanks for yet another great video!

    Pass. Clearly with Ming you either get it or you don’t. I don’t. Each to their own but I think with a 3k (market price) budget you’ve got be able to find something a little more meaningful as a wristwatch surely? The case and lug design means any level of wear will surely mean a minimalist watch that should look clean instead has scratches and dinks - as is already the case. The Ali express crowd should be able to replicate this as a homage for less than $200. Nice review Mr M.

      to me, an old bird watch ethusiast in Singapore, ming watches are indeed overhyped and overpriced.... the design is nothing really that spectacular or unique. probably they just managed to get the interests of high end watch circle collectors and personalities to speak for them in earlier years. selling their "uniqueness" of them being a small, ethnic chinese run , malaysia-singapore based brand.

    I love what Ming is doing. $2-3k is a LOT to pay and, after the initial hype, the 17.09's seem to be dropping in value. The problem for me is opportunity cost. For not much more, you can dive into really interesting vintage and neo-vintage stuff like Heuer Autavias, Sinn Navitimers and such. Not to mention a whole raft of Tudors, Nomos,' Cartiers and so forth. So this might be a catch and release; enjoy for awhile just to experience a Ming. Maybe that's the route I'll take.

    Once I see a watch being sold above retail by the scalpers i always move on, I think the business model is to restrict supply on purpose a' la rolex and create a sense of " please ming sell me one of your watches " . Paying 50% up front is also a definite no no for me , for that kind of cash the list of fine, obtainable timepieces is huge.

  • @Nefville
    @Nefville 2 года назад +13

    Not that I don't like the watch but I am NOT in the habit of giving out interest-free business loans. Ming has been asking customers to put down a 50% non-refundable deposit more than a year in advance of delivery of the watch. And the majority of them are far more expensive than this. If Ming is so mismanaged that they need some or all of the money so far in advance to make their watches, forget it. I don't trust the company and I _really_ don't like the business model.

    I don't track things down to the second. I do enjoy the smooth sweep of a second hand across the dial. Part of what makes a mechanical watch special.

    • @giusepperocchi2979
      @giusepperocchi2979 2 года назад +2

      After owning many dozens of mechanical watches I don’t find it so special anymore, especially knowing it’s something achievable with movements worth next to nothing. I almost find refreshing, every now and again, the sense of precision coming from the ticking seconds hand on quartz watches, go figure. If we talk spring drive or very high beat movements it’s another story, that’s actually special.

    In my case, this watch design grew on me throughout the video. However, I don´t think I would ever want one at even a fifth of that price. I have a watch without a seconds hand--an Alpina quartz GMT. For quite a while, the lack of a second hand bothered me but I could not quite figure why. Now, I think it is because I use the movement of a second hand to almost subconsciously reassure myself that the watch is running. Doesn´t bother me anymore.

    I was initially underwhelmed upon buying as my "special" watch. But after putting on a nato and using as an everyday its brilliant. The longer you spend with it the more you appreciate the design. Theres been very little in horology aesthetic innovativation that honours the past while looking forward: you either get another heritage design or homage or something too brash. Some interesting design points, marking the inside of the crystal, large easily visible hands, minimalist styling, but also some huge design fails; the crown is not screw down, the case is too thick, only 100m water resistance and rather poor case finishing in that it is easily scratched. Worth perhaps £200 on a good day with the wind behind it.

  • @ElijsDima

    Looks nice, and the Ming brand is pretty good nowadays; however... objectively on this watch I do not see anything that *couldn't* be replicated equally by e.g. san martin or suchlike. The caseback is dead simple; the case is pretty simply finished; the bezel is pure polished; the dial is just stamped and painted brass.. Replicating this with a basic sellita sw200 for well under 500 is completely doable. And honestly if I was in charge of Seagull or san martin, I'd absolutely push out a model of two with this case and approximate dial.

    The downside of etching the markers on the crystal is that if you do end up shattering it, you can't just pop in an aftermarket one...unless you want a timeless design. And I don't understand the point of going for a GMT movement for a two hander - why complicate things unnecessarily!

    Well it is a watch. But this would have to be an acquired taste for me. I think it might be the starkness of the white lines, or maybe the inelegance(is that a word) of that starkness. It might be the kind of watch that strikes you differently in the flesh as well, but I'm not betting on that either. Outside of the script, love the dial design... but not the hands. I’m not a fan of the micro brand mini release. I understand the marketing strategy and it works, but I find it irritating. Baltic just did it with its beautiful new chrono. 300 units and poof. And they hyped it for weeks. Plus, I’m sick of the claim that $2,000 is an “affordable” or “attainable” price point. It’s neither. Both depend on your own resource level. What’s both to someone might be neither to another. For me, who is like you in many ways, I like to have a big variety of watches-as I get bored wearing the same handful everyday-so is l generally play in the $500 or less (and mainly $200 or less) pool. I can “afford” more and more is “attainable” for me, but I choose not to get manipulated into attaining anything that is marketed as affordable or attainable. That said, I love the new Baltic. If they produced it widely, I might actually have bought one.

    I think they're fantastic, the Micro Moser, they've had some PR snafus sure, the ladies model was a particularly egregious piece of fuggery but as for the function issues thats what garantees are for. Strong original, functional minimal design, theres very little like them except for Isotope who have a simalarly original, but cruicially, functional, fresh look.

    I like a 3 hander, a lovely white second hand would of made this watch for me. the price puts me off to be honest, but I'm from the north east and have a frugal mentality. but I would rather buy a second hand Omega with that king of money. regards keep up the good work.

    Two hands non date does it for me, love the hand design, dial, lumed glass.. But the flared out lugs instantly irked and even more the way the hands are mounted - it looks like an upholstery tack attaching them to the movement.. Urgh.

    Genuinely surprised with this one. I feel like the design grew on me through the span of the video. The lume is spectacular. The design overall is interesting and unique which I appreciate. I feel like I've seen some similar in vibe watches for much cheaper though (I think Marloe Coniston has some similarities)

    Very informative video, not for the majority I spose, however it did look very good and comfortable in the wrist shots which surprised me. Also I think it woulld be a conversation starter that would get you a lot of comments when wearing from any company you may be in.

    Unique watch but too many flaws. Modified Sellita movement, scratch magnetic bezel, short strap and strange lugs. I would want more for my money than a gorgeous dial. At the price range there will be better prospects than the Ming. Unlike Gary this type of watch has no appeal to me. As always great review and intro Jody. Keep them coming. 👍⌚😎

    Hey Jody! I'm a fan of what Ming is doing, and I was just about ready to purchase one when the whole GMT debacle happened. I think the hype went to Ming and their reaction to a fault of their own, was just distasteful. They could've handled their mess better but only made it worse by banning customers who complained on Social Media about the issues with the watch. In my opinion, atleast, that's when I decided Ming wasn't for me. Instead, I did end up buying a Grand Seiko Mt. Iwate GMT, and love it very much.

  • @thomasmathes5019

    I am one who never got the hype with Ming. The dial+hand designs are interesting but nothing that excites me. One big strike against (to me) it is the mechanically coupled independently adjustable hour hand (IAHH).
    I have a couple of Swatch Group watches with this "feature" (an Omega AT 8500 and a Certina high-accuracy quartz chronograph). Both have hour alignment issues with the IAHH, the Omega being much worse than the Certina. After my limited experience with IAHH I have gotten to despise the idea. If the Sellita design is as crummy as the Swatch one I would avoid any watch with IAHH like the plague. The only kind that never gave me a problem was with motor driven IAHH like in my Citizens.

    Perfect holiday watch, with that independent hour hand and with no minute markers you can more of less tell the time. Reminds me of a lot of vintage watches that just had a mark for the hours. I'd want more for that money but if you like it, why not?
