WOW! Keep living the dream people. Jeff...brilliant man, don't change a thing. Your bride is your savior. As a dad myself, I've raised my kids to be independent, think for themselves, care about their environment and be aware of what's available to them. Rose...we all know you are the solid, hard working beauty behind all of it, stay strong. 99% of the wives in the world could only dream to have the satisfying lifestyle afforded to you. Top shelf are you! I can't say enough young lady. Girls... your parents stepped out of the norm in faith to help make you be the best you could be. It's been an absolute pleasure watching your growth. You have an opportunity to be anything you choose. Be blessed, safe and enjoy each day. A very Merry Christmas to you all! Thank you all for sticking it out and providing us with a glimpse of your lives.
I live in an area that was mined a lot during the gold rush and panning was a great hobby. When I was in school for dental lab I would catch a scorpion and kill it with either and sprue it. I used lacquer hair spray and would pose it then put in in a tall crucible and pour the dental plaster in it. From there it was the process of using the burn out oven then casting it using my pure placer gold. You could see every hair and fiber of the critter after polishing. I left the sprue on it as a stand until after polishing. I also made rings but would toss in old gold bands with my placer gold.
Right on guys. Sucks that the gold didn't turn out correctly. No worries though u can still fix it. You guys have a pretty good spot u were highbanking.. love the gridlessness family. Merry Christmas and happy new year everyone
I stumbled across your channel the other day and just finished watching your video on your micro-hydro system. Could you do a video showing the way you designed and built the water catchment basin, the inlet and pipe layout (type of pipe, depth installed, etc) and how you designed and built the pump house and water discharge system after it's gone through the turbine? Do you use that same water for drinking and if so, how do you clean/sanitize it?
as I watched this on what y'all call boxing day hope you had a nice Christmas, My only experience with smelting is lead wheel weights for fishing weights and Black powder musket balls even that can have its hurdles, i eventually learned how to do it keep trying and have fun👍👍👍
I'm so sorry Jeff I know you had your heart set for ur Rings 🥴. I'm keep forgetting to tell you that my Friend got me a new wooden spoon! I wish you All a Merry Christmas 🎀🎄☃️ JO JO IN VT 💞💨❄️
Try to not get a flashback of the flame straight into the nozzle because the nozzle melts at around 1200°C but the flame is 2800-3100°C itself. This is the single event that destroys these nozzles the fastest. Still, I envy your living. I lived in Maple Ridge (Van, BC) for a year in 2010 and I've always wanted to move back, love it there.
Man this makes me want to have a small vial of Yukon gold for my collection as well as sell some to people I know. Now 1 thing I can offer is if you find any garnets or gemstones in general; I can always facet some for you. I’m still working on my business; but I need more customer experience and to get myself use to a work flow. It’s been slow; but I’m getting there
Hi Use clay or sand Make your own mould I.e. press and existing ring as per the size required into the clay and cast the "liquid gold " Then just hammer of file and buff the ring to finish it the mould
In world War 2 men took solid silver or gold coins and would beat the edges with a spoon while in the trenches and the edge would flatten like a ring. They would file out the middle to fit their finger and boom you got a ring. Its called trench art, my grandpa does it
I'm not a smelting expert, but some of the other vids I've watched, placer gold has to be refined to get 999 purity and that involves the use of chemicals. Please correct me if i'm wrong. That would explain the gold you had
I am pretty sure the gold you had contained other elements like nickel, lead, platinum etc. depending on the mix it will make the gold brittle. You should first refine the gold to 24k with aqua regia or poor mans nitric acid. Once you got rid of the additional elements that way, you will be successful in rolling it out without cracking. Also you need to heat the alloy every so often between rolling, so as to relax the built up microcracks when rolling it out. Watch youtube videos how they make jewelry...they regularly get the gold / silver to red hot to soften it again. Each rolling makes it harder / more brittle
You all should mint some coins with a big G on one side and a pine tree on the other side. I wonder if you could get a tool and dye company to forge you a coin stamp. If you could, you could really make it fancy.
It’s definitely exciting to literally pull money out of the dirt. Hopefully the value more than offsets the investment. The experience itself is just a bonus. 👍

He who smelt it dealt it (hahaha). Oi!-bad pun. I’m a jeweler whose been in the business over 20 years. I’ve poured and milled countless gold pieces (rings, bracelets, pendants, etc). Anyway-Stuller and Hoover & Strong are excellent jeweler resources that might send you professional alloy mixes to add to your pure gold to make ROLLING GOLD-(not CASTING GOLD.) ROLLING GOLD is a different alloy mix designed to make metal more malleable for rolling out with a rolling mill to compress and stretch better. THIS is what YOU NEED to mix to mill your rings. CASTING gold is designed to take to a lost wax mold better, but it will crack and split under compression like the gold did when your goldsmith worked with it. It’s AWFUL to work with!!! I know-I’ve worked with both as I hand mill pieces and do finishing work at a store that casts custom pieces we 3-D design. Also, mixing pieces of copper and silver you’ve bought that wasn’t specifically made for alloy blending may have other impurities (even if it claims it doesn’t) that might adversely effect your alloy mix. Please contact Stuller and ask them for access to materials and insight on what you need. Heck-on your trip take a tour. I’ve always wanted to You may need to set up an account with them, but even if you can’t (they have strict requirements) you can find a jeweler that already has an account that is willing to help you. (raising a hand, shyly) If you ever make it to Central NY, look up Cunningham Custom Jewelry and ask for me. If you like, you can camp out on my land and see the sights, and I can teach you how to make your own rings with your own gold. I taught jewelry classes for four years, and taught private students. You and your gals can DEFINITELY do this. I’ll even teach you remotely, if you like, but you’ll need a few tools (always fun to get new tools!!!). Rio Grande or Geswin are great sources. Best!!!
Brilliant video, you really did it! I am amazed and so happy for you. Can I order a ring already? Happy Christmas to you all from Europe. 2022 12 25 16:13
That black is iron. One can melt it and cast it into something. As for the copper. When it is heated, it begins to oxide and the further heating turns the oxide into a gas that burns green. And the more you heat it, the more oxide that turns into a gas that burns and so you literally burned the copper away. It went up in green flame/smoke. So, nest we get to see if you will turn the pure gold into 18 K, ok?
I’m going to guess your gold had impurities in it. Perhaps the black sand. It should be refined. Maybe your jeweller guy should alloy the gold for you. Your silver should be .999 not .925. New crucibles need to be prepared with borax so the metal doesn’t stick to it.
The problem when making the 18 carat was that the smelted gold was not 24 carat. You need to refine it to get 24 carat. Look at the RUclips channel SREETIPS and see if he would be willing to make 18 carat for you.
he wont do anything with other ppls gold but the refining steps are simple plus only add one metal as anymore can cause the grain to become to large and cause the metal to break

See if you can talk Mount Baker Mining and Metal company, purifying that gold is doable. Friend to Dan Hurd and close to my area of WA state.

10:41 Is it possible that copper wire is alloy itself? So your 18k gold alloy become more strength than it supposed to be?

those close'ups..kind of what Dan Hurd does to make it look like a lot of gold....lol

the mat your using is for larger gold, I would think you would collect more with a tighter mat
Gold
Could the problem with that gold be due to your use of sterling silver, and not pure silver?
That was not the problem. The sterling is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper, so as long as you take that into account when you alloy, it is just fine.
Man, this is going to get lost waaaay down in the feed. I don't get notifications.

Who is the sixth girl getting a ring?
Ok I’m confused. Just Rose and the girls get rings? Are you getting one too?
Why did you add copper and silver…Isn’t that why the gold was brittle
