What tools do you feel are essential for the beginner sewist?

I think you covered this really well. A pin cushion is good either for the wrist or not. I don't know if you want to go into how to use patterns sometime. I love your ruffled top or dress. Did you make that?😍

Thank you for saying that it’s not necessary to buy everything we see on social media.

Really appreciate the honesty in your message! So true how even after sewing for 30years i feel like i can't keep up to the 'Jones's ,like I'm missing out, but after each project i create I see how the supplies i do have, served me well and will continue to for many more years. Always good to start out slow & buy what you can afford, things do wear out or break down & and as your skills increase that is when you can upgrade.

    Good information 👍🏽
Three things every beginner sewist should have I believe are: good scissors for cutting fabric and a separate pair of scissors to cut paper, good thread and a desk lamp or a good light at your sewing machine area.

Great list. I purchased a 1950s Singer 15-91sewing machine. That machine will last longer than we'll be alive and the stitching and buttonholes are better than the new machines. It is a straight machine but has a reverse function. Also, Singer made so many of these machines that it's not hard to find parts for them.

Excellent list. Thanks for shouting out the consumerism trap. The "gotta have it all" harkens me back to my rubber stamp hobby. 😬 It wasn't until recently it even occurred to me that fabric lines get discontinued. I definitely can appreciate better thread and even better quality fabric and scissors. I have a good pair of Ginghers. I just bought pinking shears ( not Gingher). I regret not buying a better pair, not for blade quality, but more for comfort.

When cutting my fabric I find it helpful to use a grabber bar with suction cups on my big ruler. It really helps me hold pressure on my fabric. You can buy the grabber bar with suction cups in Walmart in the shower/tub area for about $10. Its the same exact one they sell on Amazon for upwards of $20.

I like it! Sometimes companies take a product and market it TO the sewing & quilting crowd and double the price.

I love the clips for holding fabric instead of pins mostly. Amazon has a great deal on them.

My son bought me a double ended seam ripper where the tool goes into wood. The guy practically gave to him because he was shocked he knew what a seam ripper was.

Yes.. love remnants. Those 5" square packs you can make a very simple quilted table cover or little wall hanging size since the fabrics colors are complementary. But I have a question about the oil in this machine.. What is the deal exactly? Is there anything I should be doing about it over time?
