GoldenEye was such a huge part of my childhood. I remember family get togethers and we'd play 4 player split-screen for hours together. (this and a WCW game) Proximity matches were probably my favorite because of the chaos of it all. One of my all time favorites. It's always a joy seeing someone else have the same love for it.
I loved the game as a kid. Even bought the book to try and beat the bonus missions. Multiplayer with this and Tomorrow Never Dies were family game nights. So much fun. So much nostalgia.
As someone who only played Perfect dark, the spiritual successor to this - it’s wild to see the same basic core elements here. Also, a TON of assets are reused in Perfect dark (sounds, movement animations, etc). Wild shit. That game though was more bold and ambitious compared to Golden Eye in my opinion - I mean, it included full voice acting! And I think it required that 8 MB RAM expansion pack haha 😂. Really pushed the N64 to its limit.
I remember playing this at the store as a kid. The other kids couldn’t beat the first level. None of us had seen Goldeneye, so when I managed to beat it, I guessed from the objective to bungee jump that I needed to jump off the bridge. When it displayed the mission ending cinematic, everyone, myself included, thought I had beaten the level, only to screw it up at the end. Then we realized I had actually beat it. We were amazed that jumping off is what we were supposed to do. Like I said, none of us had seen the movie. I actually bought the game and beat it before I saw the movie.
This game MAY have left some type of impression on me, to the point where I've got the real versions of the Klobb, KF7, and RC-P90-- probably with more to come 😅
Sort of related but if anyone has any passing interest in speedrunning or the work that goes into it, I found watching videos on the behind-the-scenes of speedrunning Goldeneye to be really interesting.
