Habits: washing machine+basement declutter. I start a big load of wash, then go to basement (or garage) to declutter, until the washing is done, (1 hour). I can hear the wash machine from basement, so I do not even have to use a timer. I stop decluttering right when the washing is done, so I do not get too tired. I have about 10 loads of laundry per week, which makes 10 hours of basement/garage decluttering total per week. My reward is a nice fresh load of clean laundry.

Very motivating, thank you! I want a clear house, but I’m not taking action, and it prolongs the feelings of overwhelm. But when I take action, I get a lot done and feel so much better. I need to d a little every day, instead of once a week. Thanks for the encouragement!💝

Same for me as Laurey. I’ve been decluttering for more than two years (lots of inherited furniture and collections from two family members, plus some health issues prior to that that caused me to do the bare minimum around the house for a few years). Now that the end is in sight, I realize my goal has been to declutter to the point I can relocate out of state (retirement) but find myself conflicted about leaving the amenities of a major metro area and friends in favor of lower cost of living. Wrestling that is my conundrum. (Sigh)

Another excellent topic and like the 'tying new habits to an old one'. It works well for me and my aunt. I walk on Sundays, talking with her on my cell phone, it keeps me going the full 30 minutes. Gayle, you look lovely in that blue top. And Ed, you are so funny! KITA was new to me, too. 🤣

Thank you for saying everything counts. Often I get upset when I can't finish a project but since the pandemic, I have little personal time so I've had a mind shift. If I'm able to get anything extra accomplished, it's a win.

Thank you for another great, informative episode. You always have such thought-provoking topics.
I have a downsizing question I've begun asking myself, "If this didn't belong me, and I were cleaning out my house after I'd passed, would I keep, donate, recycle or throw this away?" Clearing out my parents" apartment after my mom's death has changed my perspective. If I find something I think my children would want I ask them, and let them know that they don't have to feel obligated to take it. They have taken a few things, but so far most has been donated.
Thank you for all ya'll do. I look forward to the next episode!

it's a great method to detach oneself emotionally from the inanimate objects we collect ;) Awesome and thanks for sharing

Some items are still difficult, but that question definitely helps me to be realistic (and brutally honest). I just do not want my children to face decisions about a lot of stuff while they are grieving, as I had to do.

I'm making a sign for my "Command Post", and I have been working on it. Despite feeling overwhelmed with the paper piles on my desk, I have sorted & dealt with some papers & bills , & am using my bin of Wipes to clean the dusty computer dust, etc., even little cleared off areas at a time. it is a good start!

I know our stuff talks to us. Almost constantly. So ..Lately I’m finding if I hold an item and talk to the item about why it’s there, what it’s done, where it belongs in my life, I can find it’s place- whether in my home or moving on to somewhere new. If it talks to us, why not talk right back?🎉❤😊

I totally agree! Talk right back and work it out!

I try to tackle the hot spots pretty regular, but inevitable ends up being the area that catches things going in and out of my house. I pass this area several times a day. It’s the one spot that is a drop zone but “eek” that it is right at my front door.

I will be taking early retirement shortly due to serious health conditions. Now I need to deal with my work wardrobe and see what I would actually still use.

I've developed a habit of walking while I talk on the phone. So when the phone rings is a trigger for me to walk out the door. You are my de-clutter trigger---I watch you and declutter an area.

I have 2 triggers that come to mind: feeding the cats signals cleaning the litter boxes and getting paid signals doing my timesheet.
I’ve been working on a tiddle from a few weeks ago. Our shelves have gotten untidy and they’ve been yelling at me. We’re going to be opening soon(ish) and I’m straightening and shelf reading the juvenile collection.

Gayle....why don’t you have a basket or something that sits in your command post. Then when you have to collect all those little items at the end of the day, you just pile them all in the basket and deliver them to all the appropriate places and then retry the basket to reset for the next time.
