- Northern Ontario is filled with so many things to do that most people have probably never heard of. In this video, I'll go over my top 5 things to see in northeastern Ontario for this summer. I have decided to break it down for just the northeast because it wouldn't be fair to say just Northern Ontario with so much out west that I still plan to explore. I will have more information on how to find some of these places below.

#5: Screaming Heads of Midlothian Castle, Burks Falls, Ontario.
This is probably one of the weirdest but also most unique places i've ever been to in my life. It is about a 3 hour drive from Toronto and is 10 minutes off the main highway so it's not too hard to find. There you'll find strange statues all over Peter Camini, the artists, property. It is free to enter and make sure to have at least 2 or 3 hours free to explore the screaming heads.
#4: Temagami Fire tower, Temagami, Ontario.
Just under a 5 hour drive north of Toronto is the highly underrated Temagami Fire tower. The fire tower is just 5 minutes off the highway and is a very easy hike to get to. First check out the platform to take in the breathtaking view and after that make sure to climb up the 100ft tower to see a 360 view of Temagami.
#3: Eau claire gorge, Calvin, Ontario.
This is my new favourite hike in the area and I've just recently found out about this place. Eau claire gorge is about a 4 hour drive north of Toronto and is an easy hike with the best part of the being the gorge that drops 40 feet below. Make sure to brings snacks and water as there isn't too much around there.
#2: Devil's Rock, Temiskaming shores, Ontario.
This has to be the most breathtaking on this list and is truly a hidden gem in northern Ontario. I have no idea why nobody is talking about this place and I've only just found out about it last year. A 6 hour drive north is definitely worth this as it truly took my breath away. I will leave a link to the location to the main trail as I've driven past it twice.
Just a short 15 minute hike in, you'll come onto the incredible view of Devils rock which is a 300 foot rock cliff overlooking Lake Timiskaming. Make sure to not get too close to the edge as there is no fencing and is it quite sketchy but the views alone make it worth going.
#1: Talon Chutes, Mattawa River, Ontario.
Number 1 on my list is Talon Chutes, a series of waterfalls and cliffs located on the Mattawa River. This is a very popular place for cliff jumpers and groups of friends to have drinks and spend the day.
We drove to Talon Lake Campground & Marina and from there took our kayaks to the chutes. After about 30 minutes, you should get to the dam on Bolvin lake, where you'll have to tie off your kayaks and walk for another 10 minutes to get to the chutes.

Let me now any other hidden gems that you think deserve to be in the top 5!
Five finger rapids, french river.
@@spencehutchinson1904 Never heard of this place thanks!
I definitely agree with the "Devil's Rock" comment. Not sure why more people aren't talking about this. It's a really easy hike, even from the campground. And the breathtaking views that await are absolutely incredible. Thanks for sharing!
No idea but I don't live too far away and I didn't hear about it until not too long before that video! So it's still a hidden gem for now I guess!
Great looking spots I have only made it North of Sudbury once to Thunder Bay and what a trip.
You're definitely missing out there's even more places around here that I didn't mention in this video!
Excellent video! I am in North Bay and there were places in your video I didn't know existed! Thanks for sharing!
I'm from North Bay too and hadn't heard of most of these places for so long! There's a lot of hidden gems in Northern Ontario!
Super cool to see Devils rock. We used to hike up from Camp Lorraine when I was a kid.
One of the best hike in Ontario that nobody knows about! I'd love to go for a boat ride to get a different view of Devil's rock from the water too!
@@JoeClement Lake Temiskaming is beautiful! Gets some pretty wicked white caps when the wind gets going though 😬 awesome lake for sailing and it's always nice to go have dinner on the waterfront afterwards.
Great video!! I've spent a lot of time at all of your listed locations and completely agree Devil's Rock is one of the most amazing views ever. It's more of a local known attraction than a largely known known tourist spot. Talon Chutes is amazing as well. The walk in trail you mentioned is through private property, the owner is usually good with hikers using it but always good check with him first. ( best time spent at Talon was in the late 90's when they filmed a Molson Canadian commercial there. )
We couldn't find where to walk to talon chutes so both times I've been there I kayaked in which is still really nice!
@@JoeClement After you leave the town site heading towards Mattawa there’s a large rock cliff on the left hand side of the road. Just past that is the biggest trial. Depending on the time of year that you go it might be a little overgrown. We had a hard time finding it at first as well but once you see it it’s pretty obvious.
The trail takes you right down to the river narrows where they meet. Beautiful view of the lake and the chutes.
Great video, Joe. You've given me some new places to explore. I hope you keep making these types of videos.👍
Thanks!!!! I will start uploading some more Ontario based content very soon! Let me know if there's anything you'd like to see!
@@JoeClement Great, looking forward to watching more. I'd be interested in any crown land or conservation land trails you would recommend, as I'm not as keen on Provincial Parks.
Oh Man the CHUTES are the BEST ! :)
The chutes are so dope man!!!!
Great video, keep up the good work!
Thanks buddy!
Cheers mate!
No worries!
I live in Sudbury and always looking for cool spots to check out in northern Ontario! Excellent video!
Thank you! I will be exploring Sudbury this summer! Do you have any cool locations I can check out?
Totally terrific.
Thanks! Where do you plan on visiting?
@@JoeClement They are all appealing, but I think I would start with Screaming Heads. I thank you for your hard work and creativity in producing this video.
@@davidmcgee6258 Thanks I appreciate the kind words!
Have been to all but the 300 ft cliff. You can also get to Talon shoots from a small picnic area off Highway 17 (Pimici Bay). There is parking, and if you launch your kayak or canoe from there you can go upstream to the chutes- past some beautiful cliffs. Eau Claire gorge is beautiful in the winter with ice, a good snowshoe hike to see this.
We've seen tons of people walking in but after driving around trying to find the trail we couldn't and I didn't want to mislead anyone haha
Great video, I’ve been to 4 of 5, just need to check out the screaming heads!!! FYI Devil’s Rock is about 45 minutes further North from Temagami, more like 5h15m from Toronto.
I realized that after my post but if you're going to head to Temagami you mine as well hit up devils rock in the same day! I believe that screaming heads might be closed for the year....
North Eastern Ontario has been my backyard playground most of my life. I was really surprised the Cup and Saucer hiking trail was not mentioned. Manitoulin Island is very beautiful and the largest island in the world on a freshwater body. Bridal Veil Falls is a nice place to visit while there. There are lots of things to do when you visit Manitoulin Island. While in that area, Onaping Falls is nice. If you are in Sudbury, a nice place for a picnic is in the town of Capreol, and there is a little cliff to jump off and a public beach to relax at. If you are in that area, there is a nice trail at Green Lake and a nice view of some falls you can walk right up to. If you are looking to take a tour, a visit to the Big Nickel is always fun, and a trip to Science North is a fun place for the family. If you are looking for a fun night out, you can't go wrong playing porketta bingo. North Eastern Ontario is a big area and there are countless places visit.
I have never actually been to cup and saucer trail so I didn't want to mention any places that I've never actually experience personally. Thanks for other suggestions I might do another video like this next year sharing some other cool places to explore!
@@JoeClement I look forward to seeing it. Thanks for making and sharing the vid.
If you’re near Sudbury the wolf mountain trail is accessible by keep or 4X4 check out back road bill
Cool I've never heard of it! I'll have to throw it on my list of places to explore this summer!
You need to do a NORTH NORTH ontario one or northwestern
Totally agree!
Highfalls in timmins Ontario!
Never heard of it! I'm always looking for hidden gems!
@@JoeClement High Falls is a great hike! Especially great for beginners or less outdoorsy folks. We've done it with a 3yo, and a city gal who hates nature 😅 Beautiful spot for a packed lunch.
You can hike devils rock in the winter with out a problem poeple be a little more adventurous
Don't get me wrong I love adventure but it's a littke sketchy in the winter... especially when the ground is covered in ice
HARVEST!!
YES haha
Its so strange to always see Burks falls as such a destination now its my home town and Kamani pronounced ka-mar-ni was my high school art teacher its so strange that hes become what he has for putting sculptures in a field and turning his house into a castle type thing lol we used to go camp in those fields as teenagers and eat mushrooms and trip out on the peacocks running around good times but glad i left burks falls nice to visit for a day or 2 thats about it
