I was recalling the days when I used to watch Pinocchio (Disney) when I was 7 and I remember sitting on the Pinocchio ride in Los Angeles Disney Land. I recalled the Pleasure Island scene where boys were all having fun and doing whatever they wanted without any repercussions. In the end they are transformed into jackasses, as they were making jackasses of themselves and sold into slavery - most likely into back breaking hard labor. The salt mines is most likely a death sentence. As a minor I couldn’t understand the whole scene but as I’ve grown older, I've realized that it is extremely terrifying esp where Lampwick (the boy who befriends Pinocchio) turns into a jackass. None of the boys are rescued and it’s a one way ticket to hell. The boys dont die, but are transformed into a very low form of existence. Jordan Peterson gave a brilliant analysis of these scenes. Hedonism is so destructive that people engaged in it do not even realize it. The arrogance and narcissism that takes over you makes you oblivious to the destructive path that you are taking. It makes you self centered, arrogant, narcissistic, heedless and hostile towards those who are trying to point out the destruction your path entails. This is how Lampwick behaves with Jiminy the cricket. He mocks, taunts, and behaves insolently. The jackass in the novel is a symbol of stupidity, ignorance, loss of humanity, loss of self respect, humiliation, the transformation from a human being to something lower than a beast that is fit for exploitation and slavery. The boys who were transformed into jackasses still retain a part of their human intelligence, and they realize that they are being humiliated, esp the way Lampwick reacts as he sees his transformation. He shrieks in horror as he sees his reflection in the mirror, and begs for Pinocchio to help him and even call Jiminy. But it is too late. The tough boy Lampwick crumbles and is broken down. When hedonists who are deluded to think that they are free to do whatever they want and are all about permissiveness, they lose their humanity. They lose their intelligence, wisdom, moral compass and sense of responsibility. Pleasure Island represents such a place. It is a hellish place, which is cursed (as that is where the boys transform and never return), but it is very deceptive as it gives off an illusion of unlimited fun, pleasure, unlimited food, smoking, drinking, gambling, fighting, vandalism, delinquency, irresponsibility, self centredness and anarchy. This is a place where one makes a complete jackass out of himself. Behind the scenes, the coachman and his cronies (the black like figures) are preparing the crates and ships to trap the boys, once they are transformed. Notice in the end the boys who are transformed into jackasses are begging for mercy but are shown none by the coachman. Instead he becomes more tyrannical, cracks his whip kicks, bullies and manhandles them. That is an ultimate loss of self respect. The jackasses look sad, dejected, humiliated and subdued. They realize that they have been enslaved and that there is no going back. All of their pleas for mercy and help are in vain at this point. One boy turned jackass begs (in a weeping voice) to be sent back to his mother, only to be roughly handled and silenced. Bruce Lee said "If you make an ass out of yourself, somebody will be willing to ride you". When you lose your humanity, self respect, your morals, your identity; you become a slave. a slave to your whims, base desires, to those who will easily exploit and manipulate you. The coachman represents evil, tyranny, cunning, guile, and is a psychopath (where he grins at the fox and cat at the tavern - that smile shows how evil and villainous he is when he reveals his plan to kidnap "stupid little boys" who "never come back as boys") - extremely frightening. A lifestyle of hedonism makes you stupid and lose your intelligence. One does make a jackass out of himself. Also this concept of permissiveness and freedom are illusions. They are deceptions. There is no such thing as freedom (of course when we talk about freedom, we need to know the context). We have rules and morals to abide by. We cannot just do whatever we want. A life wasted and all in vain is the most painful regret, and especially when we realize that there is no going back. The boys who were transformed learn this the hard way - when they realize that they have lost their self, their identity, their freedom, their honor, their pride, their self respect, their families (whom they will most likely never see again), their intelligence, their voices, their clothes (as they are stripped off by the coachman before being sold) and most of all - their life - as it has been in vain. Pinocchio manages to escape as he does not go down the path as deeply as his friend Lampwick. He sees his friend getting transformed and abandons his drink and cigar and follows his conscience out of the darkness. He learns that Jiminy is his only true and sincere friend who is his true well wisher and guide. Because of this he is saved from destruction. For me, Pinocchio was the most terrifying Disney film. Disney tales have really powerful lessons and are not just mere entertainment. .
Disney movies have subliminal messages that are very detrimental for a childs mind, i would never want to subject my children to this crap. They dont need to watch a disney movie to learn the good of life, just like you said you never understood what the movie was showing, neither will any child understand, all they will see and understand is the bad subliminal messages that will mess with their thought process and eventually their behaviour.

There are very deep and profound lessons, and if you watch how Jordan Peterson for example breaks them down, as he did for Pinocchio, it’s astounding as to what you can learn from them.
