    Perhaps they could've gone with a transparent acrylic material for the finger thing to make it easier to fix in the post-processing. It would also not obscure the page's content underneath it.

    13:24 Hey, I happen to have the 1983 edition of that book, "Understanding Telephone Electronics" by Radio Shack! The 1983 edition is purely text and black and white on the inside, with an orange cover wrap.

    I think the reason it's much better at cropping out the yellow tools is because, while it's perfectly able to detect and delete the bright yellow pixels (as they've got a pretty got contrast to the plain white page), the task of reconstructing what was obscured by the tool is much harder (because the page is never perfectly white / scanned perfectly white). On the other hand, when using the B&W mode, the image suddenly isn't comprised of 256ish RGB colours anymore (or at least can be), it's now shrunken down to two "colours" (Black and White). Therefore, as the page's background's scan is now - literally - perfectly white, the tool can be replaced easily.

    I wonder if you try greyscale option which might get rid of the color of the finger cots and do a better job on the pictures

    The Library of Congress and some other libraries have a Book2Net scanner which allows you to lay the book flat on the scanner and then the image is saved to a USB stick. It is much better than using a flat bed scanner or copy machine

    I wish that a product like this existed a few years back (or rather, that I thought to search for one), because back in 2016 I threw out a bunch of Nintendo Magazine System issues (NMS basically being an Australian version of Nintendo Power), partly (and stupidly) because I thought they were taking up too much space in my house (even though it was just one tub of magazines that could have fit under the TV cabinet). Looking back, there was a lot of Nintendo history in there, like screenshots of cancelled games, limited edition / rumoured consoles and such, and I really, REALLY wish that I had scanned them in or at least not thrown them out.

      It basically takes a photo from above. Plus some software magic to flatten the page in the photo.

    • @meetoo594
      @meetoo594 10 месяцев назад +1

      Its not like a scanner in the traditional sense. A flatbed scanner scans 1 line at a time with a strip of photosensors, this is more like a downward pointing webcam or phone camera. The hardware is very overpriced for what it is, all the good stuff is done by the software. I imagine a flatbed could run rings around it for image quality and any decent phone camera on a stand could match it as well.

    - 8:00 Can you swap the black background with a white one and have the software automatically crop correctly? 🤔
    - 11:55 Um, the photo is grayscale. Did you try that? That might remove the cots and retain the image. (I think my neighbors were outside and heard me shout "grayscale!" at the screen. 🤦) Isn't there an edit-tool in the software to blot them out?
    - 15:21 Is it saving them as JPGs instead of PNGs? 🤨
    - 16:21 What's the protocol for pages like this? Crop to the page edges or crop to the small content?
    - 16:45 You don't see W.C.Fields much these days.
    - 18:21 You view PDFs in the browser? I prefer SumatraPDF.
