- I was recently sent one of CZUR's document scanners to make a video on. Normally I don't accept these requests, but I made an exception because this thing could really improve my archival efforts.

Perhaps they could've gone with a transparent acrylic material for the finger thing to make it easier to fix in the post-processing. It would also not obscure the page's content underneath it.
Well, you can make it.
I said yes!
3D Print it!
I want to see the "One year later" version of one of these videos. Did you continue to use it? Did you get fed up with something about it? Did you get something different or go back to a previous method of scanning?
Tech Tangents showcased either this scanner or another model from the same line in one of his videos a while back. You could ask him if he still uses it.
13:24 Hey, I happen to have the 1983 edition of that book, "Understanding Telephone Electronics" by Radio Shack! The 1983 edition is purely text and black and white on the inside, with an orange cover wrap.
I think the reason it's much better at cropping out the yellow tools is because, while it's perfectly able to detect and delete the bright yellow pixels (as they've got a pretty got contrast to the plain white page), the task of reconstructing what was obscured by the tool is much harder (because the page is never perfectly white / scanned perfectly white). On the other hand, when using the B&W mode, the image suddenly isn't comprised of 256ish RGB colours anymore (or at least can be), it's now shrunken down to two "colours" (Black and White). Therefore, as the page's background's scan is now - literally - perfectly white, the tool can be replaced easily.
I wonder if you try greyscale option which might get rid of the color of the finger cots and do a better job on the pictures
I didn't know scanners like this existed!
MJD is doing God's work
The Library of Congress and some other libraries have a Book2Net scanner which allows you to lay the book flat on the scanner and then the image is saved to a USB stick. It is much better than using a flat bed scanner or copy machine
this was really interesting to watch, never saw a scanner like this, btw thanks for doing the amazing work of archiving!
Actually you have seen a scanner like this.. you own one, too - your phone. Document scanners on your phone work the exact same
REAL MJD HOURZ
Thanks for the video Michael! Very interesting stuff, been wanting to scan a few books that I own, might look into this 😊
this tech looks cool and very useful
My local library had that! It’s very cool
Finally. A new entertaining video to watch
Okay, I gotta have one of those. Would save me boatloads of fiddly work with old books.
cool video, as always 👍
I wish that a product like this existed a few years back (or rather, that I thought to search for one), because back in 2016 I threw out a bunch of Nintendo Magazine System issues (NMS basically being an Australian version of Nintendo Power), partly (and stupidly) because I thought they were taking up too much space in my house (even though it was just one tub of magazines that could have fit under the TV cabinet). Looking back, there was a lot of Nintendo history in there, like screenshots of cancelled games, limited edition / rumoured consoles and such, and I really, REALLY wish that I had scanned them in or at least not thrown them out.
I love binging this channel
cool scanner! also archiving vintage technology is such a dream job, it's like two of my interests combined 😲
Very interesting! I didn't know that exist. Thanks
Good stuff!
Instead of using B&W, did you try greyscale? That would keep the photograph integrity while reducing the appearance of the finger bits.
Where do you upload/share things you have preserved? I have a giant hoard of various preserved media I would love to share
the Internet Archive!
1:40 I am still waiting for the review of the ice cube tray. :P
Hello from Mexico!
$400 is kinda steep.
Yeah for basically a tripod and a Webcam....
@@Mobin92 Good luck getting comparable results both speed and quality-wise without the software. Also, the camera is better than your typical webcam. There are certainly top quality webcams/conference cams more like the quality of this one, but they are also very expensive and not representative of what comes to mind when the word webcam is mentioned.
I think it mostly has to do with their custom software.
cool stuff
Can you scan that "Understanding Telephone Electronics" book? 😅
best RUclipsr ever
Wonder if a person used a piece of glass larger than the book to press it down flatter, would it pick up reflections or just see the book.. just thinking out loud.
he is like the fifteen RUclipsr to make a video on this scanner
Can you make sections of a page color (images) and the rest B&W? Best of both?
Cool
Hey patreon Guys
As CDs deteriorate over time, one day that CD may stop working altogether. Therefore they should be digitally archived so that the data is not lost forever
Weird, didn't get notified about this video
400 is an insane price for any kind of home use tech. People should just buy a tripod and camera
I would very seriously consider something like this if i knew that i could change the colour scheme to white text on a black background.
there are devices like this already but this would cost literally thousands less with this simple feature, if someone knows that'd be great
what is thunderscan?
YES IM EARLY!!
Why didn't you try the Grayscale color mode?
I did, it doesn't remove the finger cot outlines.
Wait... I'm confused. Is this a re-upload? I distinctively remember at least one video about this (or a similar) scanner not that long ago?
You probably just watched someone else's video
You're probably thinking of TechTangent's video!
@@kyleayy Yup, Shelby made a whole DIY scanning system like this. I think I've seen at least one other like this, but TT is definitely a recent one.
Ahh yes that's right! Had me confused there for a while :D
@@kyleayy Or CuriousMarc, or RMC, or Noel's Retro Lab (there will be some others probably but I'm naming those from channels I follow).
12:10 What about grayscale?
Unfortunately that doesn’t help
Where did you go? Your videos were good!
Been wondering the same thing. Hope all is well with Michael.
Who wants to see him do a speedrun?
wooo early watch
How does the Scanner Work… 🤔
It basically takes a photo from above. Plus some software magic to flatten the page in the photo.
Its not like a scanner in the traditional sense. A flatbed scanner scans 1 line at a time with a strip of photosensors, this is more like a downward pointing webcam or phone camera. The hardware is very overpriced for what it is, all the good stuff is done by the software. I imagine a flatbed could run rings around it for image quality and any decent phone camera on a stand could match it as well.
Giving you the product is a form of payment, it's called payment in kind.
Michael! I have a collection of Windows Missing Feature installer you might want to make a vide on. if you're interested let me know.
Graph?
ANOTHER VIDEOOO
If there was a clamped bar at the bottom, then the book might not move as much.
hello it has been 7 hours since the video was published
- 8:00 Can you swap the black background with a white one and have the software automatically crop correctly? 🤔
- 11:55 Um, the photo is grayscale. Did you try that? That might remove the cots and retain the image. (I think my neighbors were outside and heard me shout "grayscale!" at the screen. 🤦) Isn't there an edit-tool in the software to blot them out?
- 15:21 Is it saving them as JPGs instead of PNGs? 🤨
- 16:21 What's the protocol for pages like this? Crop to the page edges or crop to the small content?
- 16:45 You don't see W.C.Fields much these days.
- 18:21 You view PDFs in the browser? I prefer SumatraPDF.
Mjd please post a new video 😢
You and various tech RUclipsrs are not the only ones who use Internet Archive.
I also use it not only to download digital stuff because I want to explore them or to somehow preserve on my PC, but also upload stuff there for archival purposes.
Uh, I never said we were the only ones who use it lol
@@MichaelMJD I know. Also, kudos to you for preserving stuff on case the originals are gone forever.
I would happily pay for the software but the hardware is.. meh. I use my iPad Air to scan documents and the quality is phenomenal. But if I had that software I could certainly do a lot more.

I bet you can't have IOS 17 on iPhone X
Windows video pls 😢 i miss them
Why not put the finger cots under the page you're trying to keep flat? That way you can get them where they need to be and not obscure the page with them.
i got one on the library where i work and its really cheap plastic and a very bad quality scan, in comparision with a real scanner
