Running Hell made a top-10 appearance (tied in the 10 spot) in the GaMetal Song Ballot from 2019, and had a decent showing (most requested Cave Story song) in the 2020 song ballot, so I know this is one a lot of you have been waiting for. Lucky for us, it was one of the randomly selected songs for the Side-Quests 3 album!

14 attempts to beat it the first time. The 13th was a double KO on Ballos last phase. 14th run was the day after that 13th attempt. Was great regardless and I would repeat the same blind experience.
I was honestly thinking at first that the sign was a death trap, until I found the wall
got to that part aswel, 1st i was freaked out that most of my shit was gone (mostly levels) then i regained some, got through the most of it and then the waves of angels come and i was overwhelmed quickly.
never beaten it but tempted to buy cavestory + to try and finally finish the fight.

@@unlimited8410 Being indie makes it more impressive, because it didn't have a big budget or team behind it.
Yeah, I don't think the "indie" part denotes it in any way inferior. If anything, I think its a badge of honor. Especially considering it was early games like this that really helped carve out the modern indie market in the first place.

The jealous king had Ballos apprehended and thrown into prison, where his punishment was brutal and cruel. Humans can be terrible creature indeed…

This is the best mix of nervous anxiety and heroism to ever be in a final level, and you did it justice. Let's go, Paper Bowser!

was JUST talking to my friend about playing cave story again since its such a good game. looks at phone and sees this was uploaded it's a sign, god is real and he loves cave story just as much as us.

I always considered labrynth fight to be curly's theme, and this one to be curly and quotes theme. Because this fight is probably their most personal, they were created to destroy the demon crown and this is the only true way to do it
I agree.
This whole theme sounds less like Curly and a lot more like "the odds are against us, but we have to succeed. This is what we were made to do."
I also associate Running Hell with Ballos a lot, due to actually learning about him here and all. That dangerous/tragic sound of the first part fits him well, and the heroic later parts cheer the player on to finally put an end to the cycle.

Running hell is one of the reasons why Cave Story is one of my all time favourite games
I do really hope to get some Last Battle action some time in the future, since that one is such a banger

This is the best song from that game, IMO. Nothing else gets my blood pumping like this.

BUT GOD, the song kept me going, and a remix is just what I needed
I KNEW IT! The silhouette for this one was bothering me SO MUCH because I knew I recognized it! And then I made the assumption that it was this, and I guessed right!
Man, this brings me back to those days years ago, first-time playing through this game and constantly dying in this area before ever reaching Ballos. Then I would finally reach Ballos and die some more

I know nothing about this game or this song or even this character.
Yet GaMetal totally makes me want to find out. Damn fine work.
The original game was freeware! You can download it pretty easily, so by all means go and find out! There's also a version on Steam that costs a small fee, but comes with some additional content like upgraded graphics, 60 FPS (Freeware is capped at 50), additional side content challenges, and alternate remixed soundtracks.
Oh also there's a version on Switch but it's basically the steam version with 2 new soundtracks and local multiplayer Co-op (Don't ask me how that works in a singleplayer metroidvania, because I don't know)

I got a physical sensation that shot through my whole body when I listened to this. The Cave Story soundtrack was some of the first music I EVER started listening to, and running hell was my favorite track of the whole OST. I was 8 or 9 years old when I played the game, and I listened to the soundtrack on my cruddy Sandisk mp3 player that I had at the time. This cover gives me feelings that are indescribable through words. Thank you for this awesome cover Jonny.

I have played through this game multiple times and it still baffles me how this can be called "Curly's Theme" when there are much better songs to represent her character.
Still, Running Hell is one of my favorite tracks in any video game, and this cover does not disappoint. Keep rocking, my dude.
Still one of the best indie games of all time, one of the true greats. You REALLY captured the sense of anxiety and "by any means necessary" that Running Hell installs in the player! Hope to see "Last Battle" or "Eyes of Flame" sometime.

Absolutely love the way you handled this one Jonny, the sequential build up in each new section really reflects how Hell just ramps up more and more as you get deeper into it. Hit this one out of the park, I LOVE IT.
