I was in Darwin, Australia in 1983 while in the U.S. Air Force. Never underestimate the Australians' determination to work hard and to play hard. But work is first. lol
" .... and they tell me Old Coster gives everyone hell .. when he gets on the booze at Three Rivers Hotel .. YEAH, He's a WHOPPER !! Come on, Coster !! ". Uniquely Australian & uniquely Slim Dusty, that line; I can't think, even for a moment, of anything resembling that line being embodied in a country song, anywhere else in the world. So good !!
We are stuck in Greenvale at present because of the floods and the hotel is a short walk away. Great song, conjuring up memories of what it must have been like.
Takes me back to the days in the early 70s when I followed construction through the north. Never worked on the greenvale railway, was at the other end, Yabulu the treatment plant near townsville, loved slim then and love him now
My Uncle kicked about with Stan Coster. I grew up with this and now play this at many campfires, along with Lights on the Hill, great times in Australian music. R.I.P Slim. One of the greats.
Great song penned by the great Stan Coster.... Sadly the line is now gone, but there is a modern version of the Three Rivers Hotel still operating there.... They have a tribute plaque to Slim and Stan out the front of the pub...
Wow, I grew up on John Williamson's version of this song and never knew this one existed. They're both great artists and both versions are good in their own way but Slim's version has way more oomph to it! Stan Coster's version is fun too.
@MrLisamichelle My father was also at Green Vale were this song comes from. My father was on the final trim grader team. lived from camp 1 through to camp 6.. Stan was an operator as well on this job
I worked with Stan on the Greenvale line, he was driving a dozer doing cleanup work. Thorough gentlemen. We both ended up in Karumba cleaning up after the floods after that.

A lot of country singers pretend to be country folk, but Slim was the real deal.

What a bloody legend! Good old Slim will be missed. I lived in the town that this pub was in, and this song matches it perfectly!
Great Slim dusty Track! God bless Slim.

The line and tunnels are still there, there's talks of opening it up for tourism. You can still spot them on google maps.
I grew up listening to Slim, the best he was.
Rest in Peace Slim

I come from iron knob south Australia
Went through Greenvale a few days ago and played this song.
I never knew Slim did this one (or that it was written by Stan), I always (mistakenly) assumed Kherneghan created it...
I will have a for you slim love all your song
played this at my grandfathers funeral, R.I.P
This song is for my old Aunty bean
My grandad worked on that railway with ole slim
No he didn't. Slim didn't work on the railway. 🤣

I really liked the job that the band did with this song. To me the subsequent recording lacked the extra punch that the first had.
