- On January 18th 1958, Willie O'Ree took to the ice with the Boston Bruins after being called up to the team on an emergency basis. In doing so, O'Ree broke the league's colour barrier and changed the NHL forever...
This is the story of the first black NHL player.

I met him and I have a signed Jersey from him in person also he is from my Home City!
Daane Williams you live in Fredericton
yes i do! It’s also the capital city of New Brunswick and jenica atwin is our MLA
I’m from NB too but I’m from Saint John
Oooh cool
I conducted an interview with him at an ice rink in Escondido (california). Wonderful gentleman, full of stories, and someone who's really involved with the community down here in So Cal.
Yeah, I have a Bobblehead doll of him in his Gulls jersey. He's pretty much a legend amongst the San Diego Gulls community.
I think O’Ree deserved to have a longer NHL career. He had the potential to be up there and continue spreading his influence, but that incident against Chicago did him dirty.
Several people who played both with and against O'Ree said that he was an excellent player who never received a fair shake. He was never going to be a star, but by the assessment of his peers the man was a strong skater, a smart defender, and never shied away from physical play. Every team needs people like that.
@@doctorx3 So, he'd be that second line forward who could provide decent scoring for the team.
Thank you for covering this topic! Well done!
Congrats to 15k💪
I’m glad I watched this video, great job and amazing topic.
Awesome upload😎👍 & congrats on 15k😎🙌
A true legend. There has to be a first and I can’t imagine the pressure of being that person. Also what a badass for playing blind.
Love your videos!! The topics are always interesting and you really do your research. Keep up the excellent work. I grew up on Long Island and I remember being so happy to read about Mike Marson in the encyclopedia of Hockey. I was really, really good at hockey but decided to focus on football, baseball and basketball instead but never lost my love of hockey.
He grew up with my grandfather
Have you ever gotten to meet him?
Shane Stanton sadly no my grandfather died 30 years ago so no
I am Noah I meant, has that connection allowed you to meet Mr O’ree?
You forgot about the Willie O’Ree place
Cool as always
You should do Herb Carnegie he was one of the best black players never to make it to the show.
Tony Whitehill he even predates O’Ree. Some even say Carnegie was better than O’Ree
I believe Carnegie was a big star in the semi-pro leagues, but none of the NHL teams would touch him. According to people who played against him, he had all the talent and drive to be a brilliant pro level player, but the NHL would not give him a chance. The Rangers did offer him a spot in their minor league system, but for *less money* than he was making as a semi-pro, and he would have to uproot his family and move hundreds of miles to do it. Carnegie decided it wasn't worth the fuss, and I don't blame him.
One more addition: Frank Mahovlich and Jean Beliveau sang his praises. Those are two of the best players of their generation, and respect doesn't get much better than that.
George Armstrong was the first player of color to become a regular (and then a star) in the NHL, though he's often overlooked. Armstrong was quite light-skinned, and could pass for being white.
@Leonhard Romkey nope. A similar but also unique history of colonization, exploitation, and genocide. Black stories need to be told, and Indigenous stories need to be told. Neither one supercedes the other. No one wins unless we all win.
Larry Kwong was actually the first to break the league's color barrier.
Yes, but asians didn't suffer the same discrimination that blacks did in our early history (this obviously DOES NOT ignore the very real oppression that happened to asian communities). Black people were seen as lower than any other and white americans and canadians especially have a history of extreme bigotry towards black people. Point is that black people were seen as worse than any other minority for a long time and for them to enter a very white sport like hockey was a big deal at the time, and for good reason, because as the video points out it took black players suffering the horrible discrimination in the NHL and continuing to fight for the right to play that really broke down the wall that said hockey was a white sport.
The jackie Robinson of hockey
Why does no one ever talk about him??
Connor Kahlke cause nobody wants to and nobody forces them to
christopher draper I just think it’s weird .
Because hockey has always had a problem with acknowledging and respecting players of color. It's dominated by white people. weird alt right and conservative types have some boner to hate on whoever is different just because they're different.
@@christopherdraper5815 Don't be a coward. Say what you really mean.
Wow ! I'm surprised at his courage. To stick ard n take all that crap from some ignorant ppl. The Jackie Robinson of hockey for sure. They need too make a movie about this. Nice video. From a subscriber.
y'know..i thought there was going to be a lock-out mentioned in this video.
My skating coach is marsens brother
This man is placed on a pedestal for being Black. He never even played a full season in the NHL. Not even ONE.
Do what happened to Mackenzie skapsko
@ ScotiaNorth @ NorthNHL :: uTheNorth !! uTheChamp !!
i know u did it for the longest time and ur probably sick of it but id like to see taro come back
Lorne Richards nah love these vids
@@masonmeloccaro not saying these vids r bad just that i would like to see the heights this non realistic draft pick would of went
My guess is that he was good enough to play in the nhl, but because of his skin colour, it was much tougher.
Spot on. Hockey has a long history of racism and "white purity". It's been hard for any minority to break into hockey and it's a god damn shame because who knows how much better the sport and teams would be if we didn't have a stick up our ass about the color of someones fucking skin. I will never understand why people see the need to look down on other races and ignore the struggles they endure while crying about our own struggles and how no one apparently listens, when white people hold almost all of the industrialized world's power to this day.
Who's 'Grant Fur'?.. lol :)
the Bruins need to retire his number 22! and maybe the league should do as well!
Bruins finally did it but I agree for the league because all MLB teams did it for Jackie
Shocked that Boston allowed this guy to play. Boston is not the most progressive city lol
If I remember reading correctly, the Boston Red Sox in Major League Baseball was actually the last team to name a black player to their roster.
Boston is shockingly schizophrenic on this issue. It can be very progressive or shockingly bigoted, depending on the scenario. The same goes for every liberal city in the USA.
Wasn't it because Yawkey was actually incredibly racist? I think they actually renamed Yawkey Way outside of Fenway a few years ago. Haven't heard much about it since I live in Florida now.
Yeet
Now it’s only the Native American hockey players that have to deal with racially verbal abuse
Funny how the NHL never talks about the origin of their game. That's because it was invented in Africa and the first Hockey teams were Black
Players in Canada. Do your research in search of the TRUTH!
yes that's true
So basically he was trash
