If there was a vote for Best RUclipsr of the Year we could vote in, you would get mine. I'm wanting to design a Sprinter conversion and have watched all your videos on that so far...and learning how to use this tool makes it very easy for me to see how my own creation will look. Thank you very much for doing this. Looking forward to more videos in 2018!
Brilliant!! Spent last couple of days following online tutorials thinking I'd never get my head round constructing my van using Sketchup, wanted to cry..... but then remembered Greg!!! My saviour!! And he's come up trumps again :)) GREG FOR PRIME MINISTER!!! Thanks Greg :)
Sketch up is a very powerful tool, but not one you can easily figure out alone by accident, thank you for showing us how-to. Very useful and informative.
Hello John, really pleased you are giving it a go and hope you get on well with it. You can work in feet and inches by changing the template. I was brought up on imperial measurement but nowadays I find working in multiples of 10 kinder on the old grey matter 😂
Just made my van on sketchup using the wrong dimensions I found somewhere else online. Using these right dimensions I've now got wayyyyyyy more space to play with!!! Epic
I have watched 15 tutorials on Sketch Up. I've given up 15 times! Then YOURS! I downloaded it yet again and I finally get it! I am so thankful that I found you! Really, you should just make a copy and label it "Sketch Up Tutorial" for everyone trying to figure out how the dang thing works! Thank you!
Thx sooooo much for the clear instructions on sketchup. Have been trying to draw some plans to have my working van accomodated, so far without success. Now, after watching your tutorial, I'm finally getting there.
Greg Virgoe Hi Greg, indeed the other tutorials (like any of your posts/videos actually) are also very helpful and clear. I'm devouring them !😉 Thx again for your time and effort in sharing these
Hello Dave, It makes no difference what i'm drawing, what i'm trying to convey is the technique and what tools to use when. The same principles you can apply to draw anything you like. Rather than teach you one tool I like to draw realistic objects.
Greg Virgoe, you are a genius! I am 66 years old and have never been able to understand how to navigate programs like this before, but you make it so easy! I am fully restoring a 1949 Silver Streak Clipper caravan and have stripped it back to the shell, having just renewed the chassis and this program you introduced to me will make it so much easier for me to plan the internal cabinetry, etc. Thank you for your valuable time making my life easier and more enjoyable.
Hello Arthur, thank you very much for such fantastic feedback. Really pleased that you found the tutorial to be useful. Hope your renovation goes well for you 👍🏼😁
It's February 2021 and I'm using these great tutorials to help design my own van. Thanks for making relevant and detailed videos Greg..... They're still a great resource years after you made them.
I must tell you and say THANK YOU! I only stumbled on your channel out of pure luck!!! You are like a dream come true. I have only watched a few of your videos and already learn so much i didn't know. I'm converting a cargo trailer not a van but that's not important. All the principles are the same! I was struggling in the dark with it all. You've turned the lights on for me. Not only that but you are now holding the light for me and shinning it on the work surface as I continue on. Truly THANK YOU so much. VERY Sincerely John,
Hello John, made my day to read your feedback. Really pleased that you found my videos to be useful to you. Best wishes for your cargo trailer build. 👍🏼
Can only repeat what others have said. Excellent topic and quality of explantion. Difficult for me to visualise the van and I didnt fancy gluing 'to scale' bits of cardboard together. This is just what I needed when I needed it. Thanks again.
With just a few tools you can create some very realistic plans to help you visualize your dream van. Please let me know how you get on. Thanks for your comment.
Greg you are a life saviour! I have been watching your videos for a quite a while whilst finding and choosing our bus to convert, and honestly it is less daunting because of the effort you have put in. Many thanks!! We have chosen and soon will be getting a Vario d814. Will be picking your brain at some point I’m sure. Hope you all stay safe, happy and free
What an awesome bus, I like the shape and size of those old Mercs Hope you find a clean one with not too much rust. Good luck with the conversion and thanks for watching our build. 👍🏼😃
Appreciate the reply. It does look nice and clean from what I can see. Is an ex council with great history so fingers crossed. I tried to put a link up for the a free version of make up I found that works without the 30 day trail but it doesn’t seem to be going up. Let me know if it would help and I can send it to you and you can post it 😊
I was a Design Technology teacher and Lecture in Carpentry and Joinery for thirty five years I can not fault you this is simply the best EVER I have seen on You Tube I have watched all of your videos………..Thanks a lot
Thank you so much for posting your Sketchup Tutorials, I have drawn a first and second draft of our upcoming van conversion and would never have been able to do it without your help. Thanks again! Your the best!
You are an absolute gem, I had dl another program that I paid a little bit for....not that much. But I have no idea what i am doing. But this is briliant and free!
Hey VG Vlogs. Question. So your free version shows the same click on icons as Greg's? My "free" (30 day trial) version is virtually useless. Has less than half the tools. Keen to know if you used the same link? Because for me the 2017 SketchUp Make version doesn't exist. As far as I can tell... I'm running iOS (Macbook) by the way, if that has any bearing??
Best video I ever seen about this topic. Greg, you are doing it in such a calm, friendly and informative way, nobody else do it this helpful way. Thank you very very much!
I cannot believe how useful these videos you are producing are. Was just thinking of how I was going to draw up a van to model and had almost bought a 3D model. Now I don’t have to - thanks heaps.
I totally agree with everyone saying videos of the year and how useful this is. Unbelievable! You give the confidence to go full steam and do it! Great job from Canada
For renovation projects, I usually start with making the design with sketch up which is helpful for budgeting. I also wanted to start with the design of the van with SketchUp first. Thanks for the step by step tutorials. I have learned something new.
Thanks, binge watching them now. My shop teacher would be so proud of me that I remember all this stuff when it was all about pencil and paper 40 years ago, if only he cooks see what’s possible now :). One quick note. Is there a video on you doing the wheel-wells? Thanks :)
This is GREAT! I am a Mechanical Designer by trade, and I was looking for a 3D CAD system to use at home for our van build. This is wonderful! Thanks again for the quick tutorial. It looks like sketchup is pretty much like a full-blown CAD system. It should be a relatively easy transition to use it. Thanks again!
What a nice guy Greg. Your videos are very good and very clear explanations.Thank you very much for your kind sharing knowledge.God bless you & your family.
Greg, although practiced with SketchUp, I have learnt some things today that I didn't know, and I have studied the online providers of help before. (I don't think it was old age making me forget!). Practical help - much appreciated.
Hi Greg - you are an absolute star. An absolutely perfect introduction to Sketchup pitched at exactly the right level to people with no prior CAD experience. I prefer port and starboard rather than left and right though - prevents confusion. ;-)
I tried Sketchup once before, but after having read the manual, I was even more confused in the end. Now, after 18 minutes watching your tutorial closely, it all make sense. Calm voice and easy to follow movements with clear explanation of what you are doing, is so welcome. Thank you! I would like to convert a van into a campervan also (somewhere in the future) and preparation is key, no matter how soon one start with it. All your videos are a valuable library of information which makes such a project less daunting. Most possible problems are already solved on the planning board, or easily fixed while building.
Greg, thanks for this video as you have made my life a whole lot simpler by giving a demonstration as I had been stuck with the 3D sketch-up system, but now I will be able to correctly sketch my own peace by peace. Thanks again.
Wow. So clearly explained. So well planned tutorial, there's a job for you as a University Lecturer. Except you clearer and more accomplished then most of them. Great Video
Today is 4/19/2020 and I have been a student of RUclips U for over 5 years now and by far this is the best video I've seen. I'm currently in the planning stage of building a food trailer and trying to make a 3D blueprint. This video is game changer. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Hi Greg, jus wanna say after converting 6 vans myself, in various stages of finish! What you are doing is far better than so called "professional" constructors. Respect & thanks . Good luck, Martin.
I have tried to use SketchUp for other projects but simply gave up. I had a difficult time trying to control objects, etc. Your instructions are so clear that I'm going to give this app another go. I also like how you get straight to the point and give succinct reasons why one should click here, do this, and find the tool here. The pace at which you speak is perfect! Thank you so much for this video!
Brilliant work as always! This is a PhD level van design course. Your instruction is world class. I am so appreciative of all the content that you have created and agree with Jeff K: You have earned my vote for Best You Tube videos of the year.
Me too....see below yours matey! He's UNBELIEVABLE and so generous to take the time to share his know-how. My vote ❎ definitely goes to Greg! ;-) Andy Kelly
Greg Taking time to work through your tutorial, was time well spent, BRILLIANT!!!!! Now on to begin to build my van layout to see what it will be like, can't wait to begin to bring my ideas to see if they will work.
Well impressed, u'r super capable practically & clever intellectually too. So many great vids are American, so it's nice u'r keeping the British end up, top level stuff, thanx Greg!
Wow Greg, You have made an incredibly painful process incredibly easy. I am building an Expedition Vehicle and all but gave up on Sketch Up to document my build in CAD. Can't wait to start playing with the program again. Thank you, Thank you.
No problem at all, you may want to check out my other SketchUp videos too, the subject may not be applicable but the method and tools used will be helpful. I like to draw real things so you can relate to it rather than drawing random shapes. The next one in this van series is a little more detailed. Glad you liked it. 👍🏼
Greg, Thank you so much for your time, patience and knowledge in creating all your van build videos. I’m about to embark on my own new project and without this series i would not of known where, correctly, to start. Top man. Thank you. Barry.
Your videos are incredibly clear. It must be nice to have such clarity of mind. I used to use and program AutoCAD back in the 1990s and haven't done any 3d since. SketchUp sure makes it easy! Thanks again
Unlike you I'm not hiding from Snow, I'm in the oppressing heat down here in Melbourne. You'll like this, I don't have aircon in my old Kombi so when it gets too hot I drop lumps of ice down the dashboard air vents for some relief and I had to do that today while driving back from the nearby beautiful Dandenong Ranges. My 1st World problem :)
Hello Simon, I'm using probably the most expensive lightweight furniture board for this build, it's about £150 per sheet so this plan is to make the absolute maximum best use of the material before I start cutting. To be honest i wish i had a CNC it woudl make that stage much more accurate especially for the doors.
I was intrigued as to what youde be using, im used to using any weight of panel on a narrow boat build, as the boat only does 4mph max...so you can get away with quite a bit , i have watched other videos with builders using aluminium frame. keep on keeping on..were all avid viewers!
There are three companies that I have been looking at to supply the furniture boards www.morland-uk.com/products/panels/furniture-boards/lightweight-furniture-ply www.decorlam.co.uk/motor-homes.html www.kiravans.co.uk/campervan-parts-tables/vohringer-superva-light-weight-ply
I've just discovered your channel Greg and it couldn't have come at a better time. I'm currently building a Fiat Doblo conversion and, having never used any design program before, your videos on how to use SketchUp are a godsend. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and making it available in such a way that even an absolute novice like me can understand. I was concerned a design application would be too complicated for me to begin using. Not anymore. Thank you!
Hello Chris, That's really nice of you to say so and thank you for taking the time to give me such great feedback. There are a few SketchUp video that will help. Even if what I'm drawing doesn't apply the techniques I teach you can apply to anything else.
Excellent video as ever! Very skilfully executed and clear to understand. Important for all of us to comprehend - not just the cutting lists, but the whole concept of our bed layout, wet room, etc, etc and will it all fit into the space. Brilliant Greg. R & T
I like to show people how to use Sketchup because it's such a fabulous and easy way to visualise your plans far better than pencil and paper could do. You can actually walk through them and get a true sense of what it will look like. Thanks for great feedback as always. Cheers
Hi Russell, I think this is one of the most user-friendly but can give you amazing results with a small amount of knowledge. Thank for your great feedback.
Amazing video Greg. I am just about to start a van conversion and your videos are extremely helpful. I know it takes a lot of time to put these videos together but your work is really appreciated.
Thank you very much Paul, I do spend more time filming and editing than in my van doing hard labour, but I really enjoy both parts so it's not a chore at all.
After months of researching build videos - these are some of the best! The video where you explained the thermal properties of various insulation got me hooked. Thank you and keep up the good work! Your efforts to share information is greatly appreciated. I've gone back and watched all your videos so far and can't wait for the next video!
Thank you very much for your kind comments, it's always nice to hear that they are appreciated. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and whatever I do I like to do it to the best of my ability. Hope that shows
Hi Greg, another great video, thanks. Dabbled with Sketch in the past and then Fusion360 as I've designed some rudimentry item to 3D print. took measurement of my floor plan the other day now heading outside to capture the walls and roof and doors and go 3D. Cheers
watched this with complete fascination. Absolutely amazing. One question but not for you Greg... I wonder if any of those who gave this a thumbs down might like to comment as to why? Regardless of your project this is amazing. Thank you.
I have got used to there being at least half a dozen now so I no longer bother about it. Yes, it would be good to get constructive criticism so I can improve the channel if necessary, but those that just wish to be rude simply get blocked with no reply, no stress :D
Greg, having recently been introduced to your videos by my girlfriend 3 months ago I am very impressed! We are to embark on a van build and tour as you have done. I have been in property maintenance all my working life and your attention to detail is second to none! We smile watching your videos and have worked through most of them. Your cooking and sigh seeing too just wants us to get there quicker. Incredibly informative and a brilliant reference for our own ideas. We have taken much already from your build and adventure and you have been very inspiring :0)
I found your channel and subscribed way back when you were installing a window to the van. But RUclips decided to get rid of part of my subscriptions. So eventually I thought no new videos where added. Luckily I stumbled back on a video while searching for SketchUp. You are still doing a great job at showing us how to do it. Thank you and boy am I glad to be back!
Welcome back and great to have you on board again. Sorry that you have been missing my updates and hope you will enjoy catching up. Than you very much for watching.
so i thought i was pretty good at skethup until i watched this, i really learnt a great deal tha i didnt know. really enjoy all your videos Greg, keep it up!
Hi Greg, I'm torn between a Sprinter/Crafter or a Peugeot/Citroen L3H2. The Peugeot is a better size for us TBH. I live on Alderney in the Channel Islands, where campervans are banned! So it would live in France, which is only 6 miles away. We would use it for 2 week trips initially but then much longer in a few years when I take early retirement. My build will be a long and slow one, especially as I'm sure I'll enjoy it. Your videos are certainly a major source of inspiration. Thanks.
Alderney? Is that for tax reasons 😂 lol One of the reasons I chose the sprinter was the chain driven cam shaft and reliability. I don’t know much about the French vehicles but if you are storing it and holidaying there then getting it repaired should be ok. Thank you for your support and good luck with your build. Cheers
Haha, any tax advantages are cancelled out by the crippling cost of living here! One of the reasons for spending 6 months a year in Europe wild camping. I hear you on the Merc, might well go down that road.
I'm re-watching some of your older videos, mainly the build ones (because I'm in a bit of a hopeless state of mind where I don't believe anymore that I'll ever get my van and I need some motivation). This will come in very handy because it's something I can do already without actually having a van, but it'll help me greatly to visualise what it'll look like. Thx, mate! Give my love to Lou! 🙏🏽😎
It’s essential that you have a good plan as it will make the build go that much easier if you know where everything is going. Especially when you come to wiring which is one of the first things to go in. Best wishes 🤩
Actually, the wiring will be the least of my problems, since I used to work as a telephone mechanic with training as an electrician too. I agree with you. Proper planning will save you plenty of headache later on. But I'm German and I guess we're known for our "measure thrice, cut once" attitude. 😂
I often use YT for problem solving & projects.. your channel is by far & away one of the best I’ve ever come across, superb content, detail, commentary & craftsmanship. Great stuff 👍🏻👍🏻
That’s really nice of you to say so Jeff, very much appreciated. There will be plenty more videos coming on the rest of the build. Thank you
Jeff K Agreed! The best I've seen...by far.
Agreed ;-) Fantastic thanks Greg - we are planning a 170 extended sprinter
Ditto from me, downloading it now.
Seriously, thank you. I have learnt so much just from this 20 minutes video.

Greg Virgoe HaHa 😂 looking forward (as you drive) Port is on the left and Starboard is on the right and that never changes even if you are reversing.😀
By the time I've remembered that, I will have probably crashed lol
Port is the one that comes out of a bottle, starboard is the direction you lean when the bottle is empty.

Today is 4/19/2020 and I have been a student of RUclips U for over 5 years now and by far this is the best video I've seen. I'm currently in the planning stage of building a food trailer and trying to make a 3D blueprint. This video is game changer. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Unbelievable helpful. And it was like watching a Bob Ross Video :) very relaxing
Hi Greg, jus wanna say after converting 6 vans myself, in various stages of finish! What you are doing is far better than so called "professional" constructors. Respect & thanks . Good luck, Martin.
That's very nice of you to say Martin, Many thanks Greg
Dear Greg, definitely, you are the best sketchup instructor ever, I have seen many videos related to and you are the best.
Thank you very much, I'm pleased you liked it :D
I have tried to use SketchUp for other projects but simply gave up. I had a difficult time trying to control objects, etc. Your instructions are so clear that I'm going to give this app another go. I also like how you get straight to the point and give succinct reasons why one should click here, do this, and find the tool here. The pace at which you speak is perfect! Thank you so much for this video!
Brilliant work as always! This is a PhD level van design course. Your instruction is world class. I am so appreciative of all the content that you have created and agree with Jeff K: You have earned my vote for Best You Tube videos of the year.
Hi Joseph, I can’t thank you all enough for these amazing comments. Very grateful 😊
Me too....see below yours matey! He's UNBELIEVABLE and so generous to take the time to share his know-how. My vote ❎ definitely goes to Greg! ;-) Andy Kelly
Been using the online version - didn't realise you could download it for offline use...thanks!
Ah that's good, you will find it works so much quicker and better layout options for tools too. 👍🏼
Brilliantly done. thank you so much for sharing. I'm just about to build cabinets for a Vito - a sketchup layout should simplify things.
Greg
Taking time to work through your tutorial, was time well spent, BRILLIANT!!!!! Now on to begin to build my van layout to see what it will be like, can't wait to begin to bring my ideas to see if they will work.
Greg you are the best explainer, really!
Thanks so much!
I'm really flattered, thank you very much.
Well impressed, u'r super capable practically & clever intellectually too. So many great vids are American, so it's nice u'r keeping the British end up, top level stuff, thanx Greg!
Thank you Alan, very much appreciated.
Top man. Thank you.
Barry.
Barry Whitham u are welcome and best wishes with your new build. 😀👍🏼
Your videos are incredibly clear. It must be nice to have such clarity of mind. I used to use and program AutoCAD back in the 1990s and haven't done any 3d since. SketchUp sure makes it easy! Thanks again
Thank you. Wonderful step by step instructions, just what I needed to get me working in Sketchup.
Thank you, David, I have a few more SketchUp videos you may also find of interest.
I realized that after I watched your video again and another time. Thanks for the quick reply
No problem 😉
You’re a life saver! So glad I found your channel! I now feel like I can get started on my sprinter van.
That's great news, pleased they are useful to you.
Greg, Inspiring is becoming your normal!
Hi Karl, thank you buddy, hope you are having a relaxing holiday.
NIce starter tutorial. I shall try and give it a go. looking forward to the cabinet design, and how you decide on a cutting plan, sounds interesting.
There are three companies that I have been looking at to supply the furniture boards

www.decorlam.co.uk/motor-homes.html
www.kiravans.co.uk/campervan-parts-tables/vohringer-superva-light-weight-ply
This is such a game changer, now i can actually visualize my camper project. Thanks you so much for making these excellent videos!
Brilliant video! Thanks very much! I’m sure this will save me loads of time and headaches...
I have redrawn mine a number of times and it's not cost me a penny, other than my time.
Wow I have used sketchup for around 7 years and still picked up some tips. Amazing work Greg!
Nate George that’s really good to hear. Thanks for letting me know. 👍🏼😊
Cheers
An excellent video for a new Sketchup user- concise, very well described and informative - thank you!
Thanks for doing this Greg. This was much helpful! Hands down best channel for Campervan build.
Best instructions ever. Thank you
Thank you 🙏🏼 glad you liked it
That was superb! My very basic sketch up skills have now improved massively! Onto planning my Sprinter!
Really pleased that helped you out. You might find my other SketchUp videos useful to you as well.
Wow! Your videos are the best. This is how I will do my planning! Super!
Glad you liked it 👍🏼
You are awesome Greg! This will help so much when I get to building my van and while I am still in my initial planning phase. You Rock!!
Hi Greg, you are simply perfect in everything you do. Thanks for posting your videos.
Best regards.
You are too kind, I am humbled by your feedback, many thanks!
Fantastic tutorial Greg! Have wanted to lean how to how to use a fairly basic CAD program for some time. Thanks for posting this.
Hi Russell, I think this is one of the most user-friendly but can give you amazing results with a small amount of knowledge. Thank for your great feedback.
Awesome tutorial mate, you are a natural at this. Very easy to understand and follow along.
Thank you very much for your kind comment.
Really glad you liked it.
That's a great introduction to Sketchup! Thanks Greg!
Pleased you liked it, you may find my other sketchup videos are equally useful ;D
Awesome! Thank you for taking the time to make this tutorial!
Fake Persona you are welcome.
Cheers
Mike Lockett I have a few sketchup videos that you may find useful. The processes are the same even if different drawing subject. Good luck.
@@GregVirgoe I've been working my way through them. Finding them great to follow and slowly building my virtual van's insides.
watched this with complete fascination. Absolutely amazing. One question but not for you Greg... I wonder if any of those who gave this a thumbs down might like to comment as to why? Regardless of your project this is amazing. Thank you.
I have got used to there being at least half a dozen now so I no longer bother about it.
Yes, it would be good to get constructive criticism so I can improve the channel if necessary,
but those that just wish to be rude simply get blocked with no reply, no stress :D
Really clear instructions as usual, Greg. Thanks for sharing. I'm looking forward to the next one.
Thank you for your regular support, much appreciated.
You sir, are an absolute legend...
Really appreciate that, thank you
You're an absolute legend Greg. Hands down the best Van build series I've found and I'm pretty sure I've watched them all lol
Greg Virgoe it’s a pleasure to be back!
so i thought i was pretty good at skethup until i watched this, i really learnt a great deal tha i didnt know. really enjoy all your videos Greg, keep it up!
I’m learning new stuff every day. Thank you for watching 😃
Great video. Well explained. Can’t wait to see how you draw the interior.
Thank you, That one is in the editing suite now. Soon to be released.
Absolutely FABULOUS - Thank you!
Hi, maybe you can upload your plan to the warehouse and send me the link, it would be nice to see what you have drawn?
I have so much appreciation for you making these videos. Cheers mate!
Thank you Sir.. Appreciated the tutorial
Fantastic video Greg, really well explained. Can't wait to map out my van and I haven't even bought it yet! Thanks again!
Hello Richard, what are you thinking of getting and what would be your travel plans?
Hi Greg, I'm torn between a Sprinter/Crafter or a Peugeot/Citroen L3H2. The Peugeot is a better size for us TBH. I live on Alderney in the Channel Islands, where campervans are banned! So it would live in France, which is only 6 miles away. We would use it for 2 week trips initially but then much longer in a few years when I take early retirement. My build will be a long and slow one, especially as I'm sure I'll enjoy it. Your videos are certainly a major source of inspiration. Thanks.
Alderney? Is that for tax reasons 😂 lol
One of the reasons I chose the sprinter was the chain driven cam shaft and reliability.
Hey Greg, I'm glad you are doing these videos. I'm hoping to learn something and start designing something for myself.
Hello Rick, I think it really is a very user-friendly software that you can pick up with only a few simple tools.
@@JensGraikowski sounds like it will turn out top notch 👍🏼😎
I often use YT for problem solving & projects.. your channel is by far & away one of the best I’ve ever come across, superb content, detail, commentary & craftsmanship. Great stuff 👍🏻👍🏻
This is really clear and we'll put together. Thankyou!
Glad you liked it 👍🏼😁
You are greatest ever .. Take Care Greg..
Thanks very much
