When you said there was going to be a kaiju trilogy on the Terry Talks Movies playlist, I immediately thought of the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy mostly because Mothra is one of my favorite kaiju. While I had little affection for the Showa era Gamera films, I have to admit that the Heisei Gamera movies are among the best giant monster movies I’ve ever seen.
I haven't yet seen any of the older Gamera films but I have seen these, and they're very enjoyable. The 2006 movie Gamera The Brave reboots the franchise yet again, and it's also a lot of fun, although it returns to the more kid-friendly style.
Thank you, Terry, for spreading the word on this trilogy. I’ve been telling fellow movie lovers for years that these aren’t just good monster movies. They are good movies, period, with good stories, cinematography, special effects and acting. While the original Gojira still has pride of place as my favorite kaiju movie, these three films aren’t far behind.
Congratulations on Your induction to the world of Gamera!!! In Your earlier vid You mentioned a good kaiju trilogy that You came across, and I figured it Had to be the Heisei Gamera Trilogy!!! Daiei really Showed Toho how it should be done with That Series!!! At the time, Toho had finished their Heisei Gojira/Godzilla series with Godzilla vs. Desteroyah, and kaiju fans were kinda burned out on the current Goji Formula which spaned 7 movies! Heisei Gamera breathed New Life into the Kaiju Genre with the 1st installment of Gamera Guardian Of The Universe, and when I saw it, I was Chomping at the Bit for the Next Flick! As a Fan since childhood of the Showa Gamera Series, the Heisei Gamera Series was an Unexpected, Next Level, Emotional, Mindblast!!! I even Loved Gamera The Brave(2005), even though it brought back the Childlike Aspect of the Showa Gamera, it was done in a serious but fun, almost reverent, way that really tugged at my heart strings!!! Anyhoo, I could gush all day about Heisei Gamera, but I think You've pretty much hit the nail on the head with Your Review!!! Another Daiei series You might wanna check out would be the Dai Majin Trilogy from 1966!!! Samurai & Kaiju Creepyness!!! Keep Rockin', Terry!!! 😄😄😄
@@terrytalksmovies , Oh Cool, if Ya liked the Dai Majin Series, You might get a kick out of, The Magic Serpent(1966), put out by Toie! It's got that Magic, Samurai, Kaiju thang going, and it's a Fun Romp!!! The Hero is played by the Older Friend/Ally of The Assassin Leader in Takashi Miike's 13 Assassins, of course, he's quite a bit younger!!!😄😄😄
I was never into Gamera movies much, the early ones just struck me as rather silly, and I'm not sure i ever finished one. But I watched Legion last year, and yes, definitely worth a watch for any kaiju fancier. Guess I'll need to re-visit the franchise.
The Showa Gamera movies steadily declined quite badly, but the Heisei era movies were brilliant. I saw them a while back on streaming. The 4th movie, Gamera the Brave, was a bit of a throwback to the kid-friendly era, but well done, fun, and the kids weren't irritating, a problem with the original Gamera movies.
The director of these three Gamera films would end up directing one of the best Godzilla Film, Godzilla GMK . If you like the Gamera Movies , you need to watch it .
@terrytalksmovies GMK is excellent and usually appears in many fans' top four Godzilla films (with the original, Shin Godzilla and now Minus One taking the medal positions).
It is a great trilogy. To me Gamera grows up. After the first 2 original films Gamera became a kiddie show as did Godzilla. With a better story and bigger budget the films were well made and definitely worth viewing. I have not seen them in a while but I remember that Revenge of Iris ended on a cliffhanger and thus an opening for a fourth film. I will have to revisit them.
Was trying to guess what “kaiju trilogy” you hinted at in the last video Terry, I was betting on Daiei’s excellent period-piece “Daimajin” trilogy (highly recommended 😉) as i figured Heisei Gamera was less likely to have gone under your radar, but here we are 😄 Definitely some of the best kaiju movies ever, even for those not usually into the genre. Glad you enjoyed them, and would love to see your thoughts on Nezura 1964, it’s an interesting take on the subject matter 🤔 Edit: By coincidence, “Gyaos” rhymes with “mouse”… not a _rat_ but still 😄
I saw those years ago and really enjoyed them. It was in the early days of Netflix. The discs had some humorous commentaries, one was of the monsters themselves and one had a Texan or southern US accent. I definitely need to pick up a copy of those movies.
I wasn't able to freeze the screen but does your copy of Attack of Legion have the "Lake Texarcana" dub? If not, do yourself a favor and watch it online. It's hilarious.
There are a number of fan-made videos on RUclips of the two meeting up. Toho have always turned up their noses at the idea of an official crossover as they've viewed Gamera as a knock-off of Godzilla. Ironically, Toho distributed the Heisei trilogy.
@dlee827 Very cool! I will check them out for them, thanks. As a kid, I liked Gamera just as much as Godzilla. The flames coming out the shell was genius. Truth be told, Godzilla was inspired (aka knocked off) by the movie The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms. Same idea of a giant lizard monster on the loose in a city, but as we know, Toho used a man in suit versus stop motion animation.
@captlazer5509 Toho were definitely influenced by The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms but they put their own take on the concept in the 1954 Gojira and made it into something very distinctive.
I used to see the old Gamera films on TV as a kid. Most are cute kid or kids befriend Gamera as he fights another monster who is usually quite silly looking. MST3K did a bunch of them. So I avoided the 90s films as I thought they'd just be the same stuff but heard they were good and finally watched later on. Excellent films although that 3rd one ends with a fourth seeming to be needed. Gyaos was from the third of the Showa films and the idea of a monster coming from an egg someone finds is from the 2nd. Love those people POV shots from Revenge of Iris.
The Heisei Gamera trilogy were a big step up from the 60s ones and had an influence on subsequent Godzilla movies too. Of the 60s Gameras, the first: Gamera the Giant Monster and the sequel: Gamera vs Barugon (no relation to Godzilla's pal, Baragon) were the ones I thought the best. I have a good 4-disc set of the first 11 Gamera films, put out by Mill Creek, which includes the Heisei trilogy. It should be available on Ebay or Amazon.
Another terrific video Terry, yes the location work is key here, I love it when Japanese films get out of Tokyo. The trilogy also does a great job of integrating the monster story with the human stories, which is where many kaiju movies fall flat. Incidentally, the Gyaos was played by Yumi Kameyama, one of the very first female suit actors in Japan.
Great video!I remember being blown away by these when I saw them in the 90s,amazing stuff. The director eventually made a Godzilla movie that was definitely one of the better Millenium G films!
Being already familiar (and mostly unimpressed) with the original series, when the first of the Heisei reboots appeared on one of my streaming channels I thought, what the heck, it might at least be one of those "so bad it's good" movies, why not give it a look? Talk about exceeding expectations!
Brillant set of films. I saw first film as part Japanese film festival in the 90's. Then it was shown on SBS on a Saturday night, when they show cult films. When Arrow announced box set if all Gamera, I brought , the whole just nice extras. I have been big fan of Gamera as much as Godzilla. In the set you got hardcopy of Dark Horse comic of the first film. I totally agree about all the film set. I have small vinyl figure of Gamera. During late 60's that had the Gamera theme song.
Gamera doesnt get enough love, Im more of a godzilla fan BUT gamera is very underrated and i would of loved to seen those Titans Fight, Godzilla vs Gamera
I enjoyed Guardian of the Universe, but I've watched Advent of Legion and seen that dozens of times. I haven't gotten to Revenge of Iris, though. I am much more familiar with the original 60s and 70s Gamera films.
Advent of Legion might have become my entire personality upon getting the bootleg VHS in the 90s. I've also since given Gamera money with buying the collection with everything up to Gamera the Brave and a lot of Bandai models.
Must add as a child in late 60's, I saw three different type Japanese films all dubbed of course, Godzilla, Gappa and Gamera. All but two of the Gamera films are less interesting. As Heather said I watched too much when I was young 🤣
Hey, you should do a Steven Segal retrospetive. Just kidding, can you imagine? His daughter, I assume is from the woman he was still married to when he bigamously married Kelly le Brock. He's such a foul person, i'm glag his daughter is doing well, she must have been raised without him in her life.
Patricia came up with the idea almost exactly right the Toho producer tonoca. On a plane he saw a clown that look like turtle. The flight was after a deal that fell through.

I have the Mothra trilogy on a hard drive. At some stage I'll get around to it.
I haven't yet seen any of the older Gamera films but I have seen these, and they're very enjoyable. The 2006 movie Gamera The Brave reboots the franchise yet again, and it's also a lot of fun, although it returns to the more kid-friendly style.
Try the Heisei Era trilogy.

Godzilla Minus One is up there, too. A hell of a $20 million achievement.

I've seen the Daimaijin movies but the box set may have to wait for the wallet-drought to end. 😀

You should enjoy yourself, Phil. There's no cringe in the trilogy.

The three I saw just worked as kaiju movies. That regionality was a brilliant choice by Daiei.
Gamera the Brave isn't connected to the trilogy
"They had a horde of rats, the rats had fleas-"
OMFG, that's how rats transmit Bubonic Plague! WTF was Daiei THINKING????? 🙀
They weren't.

You watched the Showa Era Gameras, huh?

Looking forward to Nezura 1964.

Totally worth picking them up.

I don't believe it does. 😀
Love Gamera. My favourite aeronautical terrapin.
Gamera rox.
Gameraaa! Gameraa! (Singing the Gamera song).
Go for it! 😀📽
The two little Japanese women singing. I loved these movies when they came on Saturday or Sunday TV.
Gamera vs Godzilla have met up in video games but done as a feature film as well as Godzilla: Minus One would be outstanding.
I'm happy for them both to exist in theirown worlds. 🙂
There was also a stage play at Expo 70 that had both fight on stage .
I seen a few pictures but no video

Gyaos, Legion and Iris are genuinely scary monsters in the Heisei Era movies.

I like the Arrow Video version. The extras are superb.

The Gyaos was incredibly well done. Scary AF.

There's an art to doing a kaiju movie that isn't full of cringe.
I'm not really into Gamera or Gojira/Godzilla but you have just given them a great spiel for anyone that is. Great work.
It's worth dipping your toe into the pool with the Heisei Trilogy.

IKR? Much better than expected!
As a kid Gamera was my absolute favorite.
Cool!
I'm a fan of the first Gamera movies, so count me in for these. Thanks, Ter.
Great pleasure. 🙂

I have that set. I really enjoy Gamera. Trying to get my grandchildren to watch them at mo.
These ones really landed well for me.
There's a recent anime Camera: Rebirth that reboots Gamera. I liked it, though not as well as the Heisei movies.
I might check it out. Thanks.

The trilogy is solid for me. It fixed the problems with the previous iterations.
I love these movies ( even the bad ones ) I have both Arrow Box Sets...Gamera Is awesome
I agree. 😀

No effing way!😉😂
Yes please review it.
Review what? 😀
My favourite kaiju movies, sorry Godzilla. Gamera the Brave is well worth a look too.
I'll check it out.
I like these movies but never understood if the main monster is good or bad, i guess it isnt the point for the japanese
The main monster is always like a bouncer. Some things get broken as it throws out the wrong 'uns.

I actually had lunch with the directer if this at of all places..... outback steakhouse.
I ate there too, in Cupertino near Apple HQ. Horrible food and none of it Australian.
