As someone who thinks Dreaming Spanish videos are useful but strongly disagrees with Pablo's anti-grammar-study stance, I think this will be a much more efficient and effective approach that will make your understanding of Spanish more wholistic.
I highly recommend the videos of a RUclipsr called Qroo Paul. He has a beginner grammar series called Cero to Conversational which is very good and also has the best videos on RUclips about the subjunctive and other topics.
    Good luck.

OMG I’m so sorry you struggled so much with whether you should learn grammar!!! Comprehensible input is excellent, but that doesn’t mean it can’t or shouldn’t be supplemented by other methods, like explicit grammar learning and translation! For many people, comprehensible input alone won’t work. Language learning is too complex to categorically say that for EVERYONE, X and X alone is the way to go, and Y, Z, etc. are bad. Please use any and all methods that will help you meet your language-learning goals! Pablo’s purism is not something to emulate!

Thanks for sharing your journey. Solely listening to learn language patterns is a very slow and inefficient way for adults to learn Spanish. You can learn those patterns much faster by focusing on them. Once you learn a pattern, you can use logic to create sentences using that pattern -- even sentences you have never seen or heard before.

Hey Qroo, Greg and I were talking about you this morning. I watched your Lesson One video about Subjunctive Present, although I don't think that's what you called it. It was mind-blowing and I kept giving Greg examples left and right where we heard it but never understood it. Por ejemplo, "cuando puedas". I never understood why they used an A in puedas...now I do! Thanks for the videos and true, focusing on the patterns is a game changer.

My issue with "only" listening is to acquire the specific manipulations (tenses) we do in native language and want to do in next language would have to take a long time because there are so many subtle things YOU (personally you with your style of speaking) use which others may not on a regular basis. Its the voice of the author- you. Why something written by you will sound slightly different from others.
I use "even" a lot because it means something significant to me. Example
I didnt even get to drink any
The even in the sentence (in my mind) allows i didn't get to do several things but at least would have thought i would have drank
So i cant leave it out of the sentence
Then i need to find that same subtlety in the next language

I believe Pablo speaks about this in a video. Where it's understandable if you live in a country and just need to speak.
Also, Pablo's estimations I believe, I'm not 100% sure, were built on his experience with Thai. The whole point behind not speaking for a while is so you don't produce sounds that aren't natural etc. for an English speaker learning Spanish, it's not that hard imo. If you understand the sounds and have a basis for pronunciation, you're good. This could be 400-500-600-700 hours. No idea but definitely not 1000.

  • @JenniferSpanish

I love grammar just as much as you guys, and I feel the same way. I've been trying to do the purist approach (95% of the time, at least) just to see what CI was all about. I don't have the time constraint for speaking. What I did notice, after 1250 hours, grammar started to seep in, and I've been noticing different grammar tenses more. I'm almost at 1500 hours (woohoo!!!), but I still don't have a solid grammar base. I do love to watch Hola Español and other learner-based videos for grammar and vocabulary. (I do the same for German, too). This is the 5% where I'm not a "purist" - I've found reviewing vocabulary and grammar along the way actually helps, as well as trying to produce something once in awhile. Also watching the beginner and super-beginner videos helps out with grammar, too. (I was always so confused if they were speaking in the present tense, or past tense in those early videos). I do feel like an 80% CI to 20% Grammar ratio is the best.
7:35 - I lol'd at the "I'm rich!" insert. I was practicing speaking with my aunt (from Texas) and a family friend (Costa Rica) and we were joking a bit about that (inside joke). All in Spanish, of course! My aunt was joking, "La millonaria aquí". (No, I don't have millions like Agustina de Argentina - that's another Dreaming Spanish reddit joke for those that don't know). Speaking of my German above, I did catch myself trying to mix in a German word with my Spanish when I couldn't think of the Spanish word fast enough.

  • @Eiei0h
    @Eiei0h День назад

Oh no! I’ve been watching, curiously waiting to see if you guys will start speaking. But I don’t think I am sold on the dreaming Spanish progress. But speaking is the mastery of a language. Right now I am doing a lot of listening because I lack 20% comprehension in the area. I’ve done some speaking practices but to see what I sounded like, but if you understood the language you can express yourself and speaking. I guess the process is convoluted because I was communicating online through writing for a long time with people in an interactive process that helped me refine and identify the proper use of some of the vocabularies especially the verbs I have learned, that in the few occasions I had to use my Spanish, it seems there was no issue. I think one needs a basic foundation of the grammar before jumping into the listening process of dreaming Spanish. Obviously there are plenty of resources from the dreaded Duoling to free online course like Spanish with Paul. But truthfully, no one method can suffice.

Thank you (once again!) Your videos are super helpful for those of us on a similar path. One thing I've noticed about the DS videos is that some of them are much more language-rich than others. So you might have 3 or 4 times as many words per minute in one video versus another. And in some we get more new words being comprehended than in others. So I don't think all minutes or hours are equal. But regardless, yes, I think there's a chasm between comprehension and speaking, and it's probably best to wait as long as possible to speak, as you've been doing, but at some point, we just have to jump and do other things...

Don’t be concerned that the teachers are from America, but you live in Spain. I’m a Brit, and had only spoke to Mexicans for the first two years of my learning, but didn’t have too many problems when I went to spain. I just made sure to watch youtube videos etc with Spaniards.
Also, talking out loud to yourself like you mentioned is a great tool, especially when your Spanish gets a bit more advanced, because a lot of the more complicated verb conjugations like past subjunctive etc aren’t that common so might not always come up when you’re chatting with a tutor, its good to imagine random scenarios where they would be needed and force yourself to say them, just to practice.

It’s a night and day difference between studying grammar from day one and studying grammar after you’ve done a good amount of reading and listening. The grammar or sentence patterns you study should feel immediately useful instead of useless. That said I would still slowly study from day one too. Hopefully with a good class. I found a wonderful free online Korean class for my level. I started a week ago and it’s been great. It’s once a week and I’d prefer something twice a week but it’s so nice to be in a class. I teach Spanish in the US. I do think Dreaming Spanish is a great system...comprehensible input is very powerful tool. That being said, speaking is the last, and hardest skill people learn. Babies--think about how they listen 24/7 in their little lives and only speak in tarzan-like sentences when they get to maybe 18 mos. to 2-3 yrs old. @@GregandLisaLewis-vz6ut Assimil is a language learning company very popular in Europe. From what I understand, their method/program covers grammar notions. They have books and recorded lessons. I am planning to go through the book for Spanish at one point, but I have not started yet, since I've done mostly input (DS... but also Hola Spanish, Spanish con Maria, Spanish con Daniela, Linguriosa, etc. as well as content for Natives whether on RUclips or Netflix.) I also recently started taking one-on-one lessons with a tutor, to get talking practice, while still spending most of my learning time on C.I. The Spanish Input channel recently looked into this, and he revealed that Krashen reports that even 10 hours of quality input is enough before you can start some output. The best advantage of waiting is that you can understand everything before you need to converse. Once you are at that stage, you can as well start lessons to speak. Best of luck 👍

When we found that out, we crossed them off the list at first but Greg was so attracted to the idea of unlimited classes that he kept looking at them. We finally agreed that any Spanish is good Spanish and just went for it. Since we've listened to so much Spain content, we are familiar with some of the different words used. We also only speak Castilian when we talk to our tutors. They know we are in Spain so they don't say anything when we do. Some even know the difference between the two vocabularies.

I don't necessarily think that you guys are diverging from Dreaming Spanish just because you are deciding to explicitly study grammar. Most of Pablo's recommendations are for not speaking at zero or very little input hours and having a silent period in order to not solidify your mistakes and not provide a feedback loop of learning from your internalized voice based on your native language instead of your target language. Since you guys are past 600 hours I think you are mostly following his recommendations. Also Pablo's recommendations on explicit grammar study I believe is mostly just based on that he thinks it's not required and for people that don't like studying it might create a barrier for people to continue learning. On another note, I believe that all the teachers on WorldsAcross are from Latin America, right? Now, I haven't tried it so I don't have any personal experience what teaching methods the teacher may use but I did want to point out if they are from Latin America and you are using them to practice speaking specifically to keep in mind that Spain and Latin American Spanish use different grammar, for instance Spain uses the vosotros form while Latin America does not. I also wanted to say that I personally have 895 hours right now and was going to start speaking at 1000 but I decided to just start practicing pretty recently within the last 50 hours. I didn't really know what I should do so I've tried a few things just to start getting some practice which I won't get into here but I feel like I'm improving just by the simple fact that I am actively practicing. I'm not sure why you guys say that you think you would have to get 1600 hours to get to where you want to because I think the general consensus in the community is you get pretty comfortable at 200 hours. I don't know how much practice you have already done but I'm confident you will get there much sooner than 1600 hours of input. One last thing, sorry this is so long but I don't think you necessarily have to study grammar but just have conversations that use all the grammar that you need. Having a teacher there will be the key that can guide you and make appropriate corrections when necessary but it doesn't specifically have to be oh we're going to practice the subjunctive today but more so that you say something that uses the subjunctive and you say it wrong and the teacher corrects you and I think this is more natural and effective. You guys already have all you need from the input that you have received you just have to convert it from passive to active knowledge.

Hola! Thank you for your thoughtful comment. You make a lot of good points. I think being in Spain gives us a different perspective on what it means to "speak". We've been "communicating" since the beginning, which is great! But we want to do more than that. We actually want to speak. Grammar definitely plays a part in that. The type of conversations we want to have are "I see the coffee shop was closed, and you were on vacation for the past 10 days. Did you have a good time? We definitely missed this coffee shop being open. We had to find a few other places, but none of them were the same. So we're glad you're back. And we'll have the usual. " So how do you say all that in Spanish 🤣 One other point...we did have some concern about the Spain dialect. But what we've realized is that there are so many dialects here in Spain, and speaking Spanish is what matters. Once we are comfortable with speaking, it will be pretty easy to pick up on the dialect specific to our region of Spain. Thanks for stopping by and contributing to the discussion. Buen dia!

Thanks for another update! I'm at 640 hours and have been trying to chart my way forward on how I'm going to practice speaking. I was going to go the route of AI (ChatGPT, myteacherAI) but I'll give WorldsAcross a look- thanks.
As a DS fan myself, I think there's nothing wrong with deviating from the platform when the time is right. 😊 If I'm not mistaken, Pablo even had a video about how the intermediate plateau can persist if one never changes up what they're doing, so it's all good. I'm planning to leave DS within 100-150 hrs myself.
One last thing I want to add: with respect to grammar, in my experience, I can't emphasize how much reading has helped this. (I use LingQ and am at 1.2M words read). I know reading is advised against in the DS roadmap until later, but I can say without a doubt that it has helped a ton with grammar, vocabulary and overall comprehension.

Cool, check WorldsAcross out. Their tutors are from South America though so keep that in mind. We looked up LingQ...totally forgot about it! I'm about to finish the Juan Fernandez books so we are going to use LingQ. Thanks for the recommendation!

Unfortunately the speak early and burn in your gringo accent crowd will use this as fodder But I do support you. Pablo learned English grammer in High School and forgot it but that tuned his ears to 'hear' or notice the grammer. This is actually common to CI. The "forgot my Spanish" crowd is much faster. Pablo's second lanugage was Japanes which has difficult grammer but but but but but that was his 3rd language and he was strong at learning by then. Personally I remain true to Pablo and his method because I hate grammer and I ENJOY litstening and have no reason to rush at all. I'm at 1070 hours. I will meet you at the fluency line soon. :) BTW I started from 0 with DS.

Yeah, we all learn differently and have different goals so it's not surprising that we use different approaches. If nothing is urgently forcing you to speak, then taking your time makes sense. Listening is definitely a less stressful method to learn.

Nice to see you guys back. I am about to cross 100 hours of DS, but I might as well confess I am already cheating. First up, DS says to log in "other work" and I don't bother counting Duolingo minutes or whatever. Second, as I think I mentioned, I go with a pretty hard line over what counts in terms of an hour. If I don't understand, probably 95% of what is in the video, not just the concept, but 95% of all individual words, I look up the 5%. With that said, I am sure that Pablo is 100% correct in that picking up Spanish with a good accent requires listening to native speakers with a good accent. He is also 100% correct that reading, while good for reading, does not help with the pronunciation one will need to speak fluently. I am looking forward to checking out worldsacross. Thanks for the updates.

I’m only in Spain for a couple of weeks at a time. So I’ll continue with Dreaming Spanish.
Slightly off topic. I’ve been watching a lot of DS videos back-2-back today because of the weather. Twice I’ve gotten a message asking me to sign in to prove that I’m not a bot. Have either of you had this message?

Get out on the street guys and just practice talking with anyone and everyone. It´s actually known that when speaking after x amount of hours of input will be similar to an infant when they start speaking. It´s difficult at first but you will progress, there is no doubt. Poco a Poco.

@@GregandLisaLewis-vz6ut Yes, that's great! Remember the motivation you guys had for listening and accumulating all those hours? Use some of that motivation for speaking. No doubt your listening comprehension will be really high. You're there with that and you'll get there with speaking too. You'll probably think that you're speaking is ''fatal'' but it probably won't be that bad. As a few do, you might think '' My comprehension is very, very high. Why isn't my speaking''
The speaking needs to be practiced just as the listening was. Input / output. No te des por vencido chicos. 👍

Good for you guys! In your situation you definitely have to fast track speaking. I think it's the hardest part but also the final piece of the puzzle. Get out there and 'just do it'.
I got super lucky and found a wonderful tutor on Preply that I do 1 hour a week with. I love her!
I also have studied a bit of grammar, I enjoy that part though....🤷‍♀️ go figure.
Greg, glad you have started Language Transfer. I agree with Lisa it is very good. Before I found DS I got through almost 1/3 of all the sessions. As soon as I can find some more time I'll continue on with those also.
