In 1997, the rate had reached £66 p/w live in. The rate was £2 per hour, but deducted accommodation rate was around £50 p/w from pay. This covered Heating and lighting/appliances. We had no cooking appliances but did have access to free meals. Laundry was at a low charge excluding uniform which was cleaned for free. Couples accommodation was of one room with shared baths/showers (annex) but single accommodation was with shared living room with cooking appliances. Ironing equipment and fridges were introduced by 1998. These were located on staff lines. We also got paid seasonal bonus of around £1000. By 1998 we all received min wage rate. With overtime rate of time and half. Further charge of optional wage was added of £12 p/w. Accomodation was greatly improved. By the time of the skyline, pay remained within the min wage rate. Seasonal Bonus therefore was increased. Albeit the working atmosphere had greatly changed. 97/98 had us feeling like a family. United. Apart from that of a on going problem of drugs which grew alarmingly worse. The policy of termination leading to 20mins of eviction from accommodation and site of work, had been changed by 98. That females were not allowed to be evicted if after local transport was closed. Therfore females would be escorted of site the following morning, but banned from using the sites amenities. (Stores/restaurants/bars)
This remained the policy in 99.
The drug culture that had grew on the site, had been promoted by local suppliers from the Minehead residences. Sourcing staff to deal within the grounds. A death of an overdose had been evident (but not publicly announced) in the year 99. Heroine had reached the park.
Alcohol was even greater a problem on the site. 24hr licensed shops, bars and local stores were readily available.
Like I said, we worked hard, long hours... but boy did we party. The staff lines would exceed the nightlife for long after customers were in bed majority of the time. Albeit, by the final 2 years, I was happy to save money and entertain myself on my gaming console. I left with nearly £5000 banked each year. When seasons stopped (around autumn) I would travel to other well known campsites and work throughout xmas and new-year. I loved those years, would return tomorrow if I wasn't a family man. Butlins work was a culture I will never forget. The good times and the bad. 💯

Worked 97-99 at Minehead. I received £66 p/w 5 days-6days in 1997. Free meals, both at staff Diner and work place (if in foods). Earned a couple of weeks off in holiday pay. Worked hard. Played hard. By 1998 nat min wage was well received. Plus tips as waiters boosted pay. Only, free meals were stopped. But small fee of £12 p/w covered breakfast and evening meal. I enjoyed working at Minehead, felt no pressure or duress. Great start to my working youth. Great memories.
