  • If you are new to our channel, HELLO! Thanks for watching our video.
We are Renata, Josh, and Gaia a Kiwi/English family, living in Auckland, New Zealand. Josh and I have always had a love for travel, and we did a lot of travelling together before having Gaia in 2020 (when the world shut down for a bit).
With our borders being closed for the past two years, we haven't travelled with Gaia as much as we imagined, so in May 2022 we quit our jobs to pursuit our dream of full time travel with our toddler. It is only a few days now until we are getting on our first long haul (10.5 hour) flight to start that adventure.
If you'd like to hear more about our plans, you can check out these two videos:
Quitting Our Jobs: • QUITTING OUR JOBS TO T...
Preparing for full time travel: • Preparing for FULL TIM...
Josh & I are both probably a bit biased towards New Zealand, as we absolutely love this country, and feel very lucky to live here. We know that not all kiwi's have the same experience of living in New Zealand, and this is just our personal opinion on what the big pros and cons are.
We hope that you enjoy this video anyway, and that it shares some insight on what living in NZ is really like. If you do enjoy it, please make sure you click the SUBSCRIBE button, and give this video a thumbs up so we know what kind of videos to make in future.

I’d suppose the housing standard isn’t great in NZ (Auckland) because the weather is pretty good. So a bit complacent with insulation and heating . You see that in parts of the US as well.

I'm glad that I saw this video. I have never been to NZ at all but many of my mates say that it is the place where I should live being the kind of person that I am (into the outdoors, hates people, loves isolation, etc...)
I first came to Australia on a working holiday visa from the US, and now an Australian permanent resident - meaning I can also live and work in NZ as a permanent resident too via the Trans-Tasman Mutual Agreement. I'll be moving to the UK and Ireland for a few years before moving to NZ, and honestly, I hope the cost of living standards in NZ get better by then. Your video gives me hope!

Some of the most over priced food items in NZ we actually produce right here. That whole "we are isolated" vibe isn't the reason... if it was we would have the cheapest milk and meat in the world. As it turns out NZ is a great place to be a vegan cos animal based products are so expensive. I pretty much agree with everything, but...NZ is expensive, but with fresh food it pays to eat seasonally. Growers raise tomatoes all year round, but this often requires heated glass houses, which makes them expensive. Eat fresh tomatoes in summer when they are maybe $2.50 a kilo, and use tinned ones in winter. Houses are expensive, but Auckland is super expensive. You can buy a real up-market house in Dunedin for the average Auckland cost. Good news for buyers is how house prices are trending down in some places.

Hi Nicola, how exciting that you’re moving here! We love the North Shore because of the beaches and access to the city, and there are loads of great suburbs there. We also love lots of places in West Auckland like Hobsonville Point, West Harbour, Titirangi, Waimauku. I’m not sure what the central suburbs would cost for rentals but Grey Lynn/Ponsonby is really nice as well. If you didn’t mind a further drive then Millwater/Milldale/Silverdale/Orewa are all nice areas with lots of new houses 😊 hope that helps!

Nice vidéo ! It will help me thank you ! I hear everywhere that Auckland is expensive but thanks to your vidéos, I can see price are quite similar to France. It depends of the product.
I am looking on 2 supermarkets online shop in Paris and we have
    - cucumber : 2.13 $ or 1.69$ for 1 cucumber
    - "paris " mushroom : 6$ or 7.45$ / kg
    - tomatoes : 4.25$/kg (here tomatoes are quite cheap because we have a lot)
    - avocato : 2.70$ each or 1.60$ each or 4.25$ for 2
    - sweet potatoe : 3.10 $ or 2.77$/ kg
    - diesel : 1.92$
    - gazoline : 2.05$
    - soja milk : 1$ to 3$ for 1L
    - 3 bedrooms (F4) : average 2650$/month for around 80/90m²
Minimal salary in France : 1450$
In Paris, salary can be a litlle better if you have a good job but not everyone has one ^^
so a lot of people live in tiny appartment or studios.
Thank you so much for your details because now, I can see that it is a possible destination !
The only thing I wouln't like there, is the wind ^^ ahahah

My ultimate goal in life is to return to New Zealand some day full time.. I was born and raised in Canada and lived in NZ for a year in 2015-2016 and fell in love. The scenery and weather absolutely cannot be beaten.
Where NZ falls short in my opinion is the cost of living. If you're someone with ALOT of money/savings or are highly educated then NZ is a no brainer. However if you're an average Joe it's really hard to justify the move. Coming from Canada In my time there I found I gave up ALOT when it came to consumables and quality of life. I could afford a lot more in the sense of a home / car / clothes etc in my country Canada. Things cost literally double in NZ and the wages are probably half.

@@goodforgaia I would agree that Canada and New Zealand are very similar. People are friendly in both places. New Zealand definitely wins in the weather category. Both have a lot of beautiful places but where Canada's so large it's a little more spread out. New Zealand is really great if you're young on a working holiday just living it up not thinking about the future too much but there's definitely a lot more opportunities in Canada. Something as simple as going out for a meal with friends is a lot less stressful in Canada. Materialistic items aren't everything but it's definitely nice to get what you want and not worry about it.

This what you get from living in Auckland. Petrol price else where in NZ can be as low as $2.55 per litre, and dropping constantly I believe Auckland has an a additional tax on theirs.
The reason for so many wood houses is that wood flex's with Earthquakes where as Brick houses tends to crumble. True some of the older houses can be damp but newer builds have overcome this problem, last time I checked the damp house ratio is about 3 to 5%
Price of grocery's is often seasonable, tomatoes in summer can be as low as $1.99 a KG. Cucumbers as low as $1.
As for the great outdoors you forgot to mention the Beaches. NZ has more coastline than mainland USA and 1000's of beaches, very easy to have an entire beach to yourself here.

I would say It also depends on what kind of job you have - is it working from home or an office, is it a social company, etc. We also made friends through having a baby - I joined a coffee group, and made an effort to talk to parents at the park, and went to different playgroups, and Josh joined social sports teams (football and basketball). *Well, she's undoubtedly a Kiwi - she said "definly" within the first five seconds of the video. Kiwis seem to have a knack for dropping entire syllables out of words. The former Prime Minister John Key, for example, had a particularly special gift for reducing words to their essence - he's the only man I know who could reduce the name "New Zealand" to a single syllable - astounding.*

And honestly - I'm not sure why people are so keen to buy, I know in other countries (i.e. in European countries) it is the norm to just rent, but it's really ingrained in the NZ culture that it's important to own a house/its a big goal. Thanks again for watching 😃

In the recent years it has deteriorated, traffic woes, crime (and light penalties on them)... , tax on everything, had made us cringe..

You think petrol is expensive, come to the UK,its hitting £2 a litre, which I think is around 4NZD. I'm a Kiwi living in the UK,I agree with all you've said,I'll probably never live in NZ again,I love the accessibility to the world from here,I always feel a bit trapped in NZ.

Hello, thanks for commenting ☺ wow - that is very expensive!! We also miss how accessible the world is from the UK, we miss all the direct flight options and even the fact you can be in a completely different culture within a few hours. Perhaps thats why we are heading off on such a big/long trip - short ones just aren't as easy and flights form NZ cost so much. Thanks again for watching 😀

@@jeffcarroll6553 Hi Jeff, thanks for commenting. Flights may be more affordable than in 1980 (in regards to wages rising), but getting from NZ to anywhere is still more expensive than flying from London - that’s the point we were referring to. We have less airline choices, we are further distance, etc. We flew London to NZ once a year when we lived there and it was significantly cheaper than buying a return from NZ (for the same trip). Thanks for watching.

Thanks for commenting, the house prices we mentioned are averages for Auckland, not Hobsonville. Countdown is also now the most expensive supermarket in NZ, and of course Pak n Save is the cheapest, neither of which we showed. Our comment on the cost of living is general - of course some people will spend a lot more than others living in the same city (you can check out cost of living indexes online to see that NZ ranks above the UK for example).

@@goodforgaia The descent into totalitarian rule aside, just the price of housing is what keeps my wife and I from returning, to live closer to my family. We live in the state of Georgia in the USA. We bought a 4/2 house on .6 of an acre in 2016 for $NZ292,000, with double glazed windows, fully insulated and central A/C. To replicate our home in the B.O.P, it would cost us over $NZ900,000 and I would still have to throw $NZ100-150,000 at it to do renovations. It's insane. I don't understand how Kiwis are paying their bills. I saw on a video last week, that petrol was $NZ14 a gallon! We're annoyed that it's $US4.38 at the moment.
