In US news and current events today, professor and doctor at Vanderbilt University Dr. Jonathan Metzl says that the COVID-19 pandemic is exposing another type of crisis in America: people are dying from whiteness. Metzl further explains what he means by this by saying, 'The GOP is making the lives of its own support base expendable'. Jonathan Metzl is the Director of the Center for Medicine, Health, and Society at Vanderbilt University and the author of the book 'Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment is Killing America's Heartland'. Metzl's work explores how many white, working-class Americans support right-wing policies, even ones that might put their lives at risk.

You know, the Republican Party's strategy over the past 40-50 years has finally come to bite them. Since the late 1970s/early 1980s, the Republican Party (following the Civil Rights Era) ran the Southern Strategy of appealing to older conservative, Caucasian, Christians (mostly men) through talking points that discriminated against minorities, non-Christians, the LGBT community, women, and foreigners. And for a few decades, this strategy worked and helped them win local, state, and even a few Presidential elections. However, as we have seen more of over the past decade or so, this strategy is no longer as successful as it once was and it is mainly through the Electoral College that Republicans keep winning elections. This strategy worked back in the 1980s when the U.S. was only around 25%-30% minority, around 90% Christian, and being LGBT wasn't commonly accepted, but now we are around 40% minority, roughly 75% Christian, and more open to the LGBT community. So, with each generation we become more diverse and accepting of this, the Republican Party's message and policies (or lack thereof) are less motivational for the upcoming voting block, as we saw with how much Trump lost the popular vote to Clinton compared to Bush Jr. to Gore. Finally, while the Republican's bigotry (particularly against Latinos) wasn't as blanant until Trump came around, the Party's continued bigotry to that group has cost them 1 of the largest potential voting blocks in the country since Latin American are prominently Catholic/Conservative, but the Republican Party would rather discriminate against Latinos today than welcome them to their side or have policies that help them. One reason I’m thankful for learning history is realizing that this has deep roots in America. This is not something unique to the Trump era. Back in the Antebellum South, only a very small minority of whites owned slaves. The vast majority of southern whites were poor, and they were kept poor due to all of the available agricultural jobs being filled by unpaid slave labor. Although the slaveless southern whites would have benefitted more from the abolition of slavery, they were all vehemently on board with the continuation of slavery. Much of this is due to the southern elite propagandizing and romanticizing slavery as a core tenet of southern culture and values, which of course the public happily signed onto. You give poor whites a demographic to point to and say “at least we’re better than them!” and all of a sudden the rich can manipulate the whole world around them. YES! Thank you. Although I'm not a person of color I grew up in a low income housing community & even though most of the families were black I loved my community everyone looked out for each other no matter what color or income & yes I know what it's like when you're a minor child & your own family can't afford healthy food, supplements, or health care & I am grateful that in my early adult life today I can afford those things to be healthier but I am still also a plant worker at a large facility with preexisting health conditions where not a single person wears a mask except for me & my husband because it's not a requirement & although they have taken measures to increase social distancing, quite a few individuals don't aknowledge the 6ft rule & ignore the guidelines because Fox news said that the pandemic is not a 'big deal' , that it's a hoax, or they simply don't watch the news at all & it absolutely terrifies me that I have to come to work everyday in order to keep a roof over my head & not to mention how I can be sick & have breathing troubles except for a fever & still get turned down for testing at 3 different clinics. It's really pathetic, my mind is blown how our federal government is handling this & THEY WANT TO REOPEN THE COUNTRY!?? All the administration cares about is reopening for the economy ASAP because it's all about the money & the right-winged extremists votes. It really breaks my heart how there have been so many unnecessary deaths because of people like these protesters in the video. The only people who doing anything to help are the state governments, the volunteers in the local communities, & the healthcare workers that are risking their lives on the front lines having to wear trash bags & reuse the same N95 mask for a month in order to do their part, & last I want to give a HUGE shout out to all workers & volunteers risking their health & families' health at this unprecedented time when we all need to be coming together to get through to the other side of global crisis alive.

I've been confused about the behavior...many of these men portray what I would imagine that a survivalist would look like...they are literally donned in survival gear and weapons, but a few weeks at home, hunkering down from a deadly virus caused them to crack. I'm a veteran...a white female. I immediately set a plan in place for my family back in February before the virus reached our shores and made sure we had masks, a stock of food and supplies, we treated this situation with the highest level of seriousness. Can someone please try to explain exactly what they are angry about? I'm genuinely trying to understand. More importantly, WHO are they angry with? The governors? None of this makes sense. Their aggression is confounding. Seems like a case of "Rebel without a cause" syndrome. I see signs that they demand freedom, Trump tells them to liberate...from what? A relatively brief stay-at-home order??! One person was filmed with a rocket launcher on their back.

The problem is if you go up to one of these people from a rural part of america and say "You are only protesting because you think your white body makes you immune." You will only get a really confused look. That statement means just as much to them as "you are only protesting because you think your green eyes makes you immune."
To most rural Americans skin color is just like length of nose or hair color, it's just something you were born with. It doesn't convey, signal or confer anything onto the person. It just is.
And to be honest I think I am starting to agree with that assessment.
If you tell people that everything is a personal responsibility, then you've told them they are in their own. There is no help out there. What happens is frustration and inadequacy, after all every problem is your fault and you deserve it.

I remember telling some of my coworkers that i struggle to relate to wealthier white people and that i get along with people in my wage bracket better. Just so happened to be mostly non-white people. They didnt understand why, so i said that whiteness is a weapon for wealthy people to use to divide poor folk. Whiteness is a horrible concept and its malevolent, and is making times like these much, much worse than they need to be. The wealthier white customers we get are terrifying in their privilege. In my city, several cashiers have been shot by wealthier white customers cause they were asked to put on a mask. I am constantly worried sick for my coworkers.
