Final safety tip should be to always have someone at home who knows where you are and when you are expected back. Only thing worse than being injured or stranded away from home is having no one coming to find you as well.
Make us some more vids Paul!

Is that possible to sleep overnight in the boat?

Yes I’ve spent quite a few years sleeping on this boat. In fact my now wife lived on it for 8 months while we were courting. 😂

Great video and write at www.sexyloops.com/flycast/safety. I agree that safety is paramount and never cast without some kind of eye protection, but what really caught my attention was when you mentioned barbed vs barbless hooks. I must admit that I’m still fishing with barbed hooks unless it’s not allowed where I’m fishing. And to make things worse: I do consider myself a supporter for catch and release, so this must seem quite ambiguous. To get to the point: I would like to pinch the barbs, but I don’t want to lose the fish. You write “You land more fish, you don’t lose any more (ok, maybe for the first week you might lose a couple more until you adapt your technique).” Can you elaborate what you mean by “until you adapt your technique” and how? :) Thank you

Hi Benjamin, well I’ve only made the transition once, and that was a long time ago! It’s really about keeping pressure on the fish - although giving the fish slack line does not necessarily mean that the fish will become unhooked either. Very often flies do come out in the net. It must be a small subtle change - but it’s well worth it; it makes releasing fish so much easier. And if you lose the odd fish to begin with then it’s not the end of the world. The long term benefits far outweigh losing a couple of fish while figuring out the right pressure. There are studies that show that with barbless you actually have a higher hook set ratio - I don’t know, I just know that I would never dream of fishing a barbed hook nowadays!! I hope you make the switch 😀

Thank you for elaborating Paul. I will certainly give it a go. I lose plenty of fish already with barbed hooks - especially at the take of a cautious fish or just seconds after setting the hook (that might imply something about my attention span, my hook-setting skills or the adversely affect of the bigger wire diameter due to the barb). I'll definitely survive should I a lose a few after making the switch, especially when knowing the survival rate should increase... =)

If I’m losing fish early in the fight I figure it’s the way they are taking. Either I need to fish a slightly different fly, thinner tippet or make sure that the leader is sunk (with dry flies). It will be interesting however because you might find - hopefully! - that more stick!

Benjamin Pasreveler how did you go Ben? Success with barbless? Cheers, Paul

@@SexyloopsTV I never looked back after making the switch. All hooks are de-barbed at the vise now. Even managed to persuade a few friends to go barbless. I was a bit worried when I started out that I would loose more fish during the fight. That never happened. The only thing I regret is that I didn't make the switch earlier 🤔
