This is so true! There were numerous cases where people thought they were saving animals by providing too much help, so much so that the animal loses its abilities to survive on its owns. For sea turtles, they lay eggs on the beach, and a lot of the baby sea turtles DIE in the process of crawling into the ocean after they hatch. Had Moana directly picked up the turtle and put it into the water, she would be violating natural selection a whole lot more than she potentially already has.

10:13 You appear to have missed the point. Before Moana, each chief put a FLAT rock to make the island taller. They put flat rocks so their descendants will have a flat surface to put their own rocks, to further solidify their insistence on staying on the island. By placing a non-flat object on top, she still made the island taller, BUT she also forces the future generations to go elsewhere to put their rocks on top of, because they won't be able to place anything on top of the shell. She broke the cycle not by "being unique", but by physically preventing its perpetuation.
I was thinking about this point as well: the next chief will have a difficult time placing anything on top of that. Maybe it is as you say, maybe the writers "simply" went for the symbolism of turning away from the land to the sea. Or maybe both. It was a smart scene anyways.
The first time I watched it, I remember the only thought I gave the shell was “How are the other chiefs gonna put theirs on?” Then I shrugged (internally) and returned to the movie.
I mean I figured they were all leaving to find new islands sense Moana can sail and everything's good agian it was a symbol for finding a new home and remembering where they came from
8:32 I like how they told Moana that it's okay. Someone else can do it if you can't/ aren't up for the task. There's nothing to worry about. You're not a failure. She didn't fail anyone, she did her very best. 9:15 I would like to point out Maui's long beautiful hair as well. I was going to say the elegant dress like body that she had.
Nothing on the scene where he throws her off the boat, ocean brings her back, he throws the heart, ocean hits him in the head with it. Maui: Ok, I'm out
Another win, the song We Know the Way was a huge advancement for Disney in incorporating the character’s native language into the song that they’re singing in such a culturally sensitive way. The best we had before that would probably be Brave or Lilo and Stitch with the lullabies, as they were both not only sung by the characters in a personal and intimate manner, but but also were relevant to the situations they occurred in. We Know the Way was still huge in that it’s used to try to convey “these characters speak this language. This is how they communicate.” Additionally, when it switches to English, the music style and emphasis stays pretty much the same, which is extremely difficult when writing bilingual music due to phonetic differences between languages. This celebrates the Polynesian culture and invites the audience to cross the cultural divide in just a perfect way. There’s a video that explains it better that I’ll link and give the title for: How Disney Uses Languages ruclips.net/video/btxZGzWlsMw/видео.html
What I love about Moana is how even though she's not the first Disney princess to want to explore outside her home and experience adventure, she wanted to do that AND save her people. she was genuinely ready and willing to become the chief of her tribe and lead them to a whole new world of possibility and I think that's just amazing
How did she put her kingdom in jeopardy? She was just incredibly naive, which was a result of being locked up for most of her life because of her sister. She thought that she'd found 'The One' and pressed for Elsa's blessing - which yes, wasn't very smart because of Elsa's ice powers, but she couldn't have KNOWN that Elsa had those powers and would freeze Arendelle. She then set out to make it right and she only trusted Prince Hans because he'd pulled the wool over her eyes - again, due to her naivete. She never intentionally put the kingdom in danger and she tried to make it right as soon as she realised what Elsa had done, and then she stopped Hans from killing Elsa once she got out of the castle after finding out that he was evil.
AzLolFun two words FUCK FROZEN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I doubt you'll see this or respond. But I really love how cheerful you are reviewing these movies. Even the gory ones, you tend to still talk about the good. Its refreshing with a youtube filled with negativity.
I'm pretty sure he did see this, I think he mentioned you at one point. Not your name but talked about what you said. Also, my sis lisens the song to your welcome, every day, I'm afraid I'm gonna start hating it just because of that...it happened with let it go, which is pretty sad.
This movie is just amazing. Every single aspect delivers. The visuals are stunning, the voice acting is great, the story is powerful, inspiring, and entertaining, the humor is great, and goddamn the songs are so incredible. Like oh my god the songs are so good. The Polynesian tunes are fantastic and the more contemporary songs are catchy and great. I just can’t get over how great this movie is.
Another thing I like about Maui's character that is exemplified in "Your Welcome". Maui did SO MANY heroic things and gave humanity so many gifts. But what did everyone know him for? For stealing the heart of Te Fiti. Brilliantly showcasing that it does not matter how many good deeds you will do, you will always be known for your mistakes.
When Moana and Te Kā touch noses and breathe together, that also has significant meaning e.g. hongi for Maori, honi for Hawaiians. The theme of identity as about knowing who you are and where you are going by where you come from is also culturally important, and embodied in the principles of ocean navigation (wayfinding) that Maui teaches. It's really incredible how Pacific peoples have navigated the seas for years and were way advanced. Agreed the music was awesome!!!
I like how she has to grow up a bit before she's ready. She wants to go now, but even her grandmother to not just shrug off her father's advice. She needs to find a reason to go on an adventure. Her journey all about saving her people. Finding Maui, restoring the heart, even learning about how to sail save her island. People, people I know, have said that she is in defiance of her father, and she does a bit. But that's part of being a Chief, finding a stable path for your people. Her father tells her: "Our people will need a chief And there you are There comes a day When you're gonna look around And realize happiness is Where you are" ...and that's what she does. It's nice to find a movie that is a nice medium between independence and responsibility without saying either is inherently bad. ♥
It's all true and awesome points. For the people who say moana disobeys her dad when you think about it almost all Disney princess disobeyed one of their parents or step parent
I toyally agree with that ! This movie is a story about maturing, self-accomplishment and caring about the loved ones. She came to realize that happiness is not just about living your dreams, but sharing them with those you care about the most. And that's why I loved Moana.
I was going to say something similar, but then I realized everything I was going to say, you've already said better. Unlike most Disney princesses, who basically abandon their kingdom to go on a quest, she wants to stay and help her people. She doesn't leave until it becomes clear that leaving is the only way to save them.
*Ever since Moana placed the shell on top of the rocks I’ve always thought,* _“So if someone else decide to become the chief after Moana dies, how are they gonna put something on top of the rock then will it just crush the shell?”_
I think they all left the island, and the shell was placed there to represent the fact that they were done with the island and that era had ended for them, so they won't need to place a new rock.
Those statistics are one of the reasons turtles always return to their birth beach to lay eggs! The more there are hatching st once, the more make it to the water
Moana's grandma turning into a manta ray is a reference to Hawaiian culture. We believe that the spirits of our loved ones continue to watch over us through animals. So props to Disney
I didn't know he help with the movie until I hear his voice in the flashback. I literally paused and freezed for like what, 30 seconds? before I yelled "LIN-MANUAL MIRANDA?!?!?!?!"
Te Fiti: "I love you, Moana. And oh, look. It's that _thief_ again." Maui: "Te Fiti! Ha ha, hey hey! Hey, how ya been?" Te Fiti: "Pretty ticked off at you, _that's_ how I've been!" If facial expressions could talk, right? :-D
I feel like Maui became a jerk (I'm saying a fact even though Maui is actually loveable thanks to the fact that he is thank very powerful and it shows because he is Rusty Phallic aka The Rock and how much character development got) from his parents that abandoned him for some reason.
10:16 Actually, I think there's a different meaning to that shell. Every chief puts on a flat rock to make the island taller... but also to allow the next chief in line to place his own rock and perpetuate the "stay only on the island" mentality. By putting on an uneven shell, she puts a stop to this grounded custom and allows her descendants to put their rocks on different islands, if anywhere at all.
He was also Benny from In The Heights, another Lin Manuel Miranda original. LMM has a tendency to cast the same people (like how Mandy Gonzalez was Nina from ITH and one of the Schuyler sisters) in his musicals. It's cool though cause it provides me with some familiarity
Actually, it should be 118 for three reasons: 1. Lin-Manuel Miranda SANG in the movie 2. Lin-Manuel Miranda worked on the movie 3. The Little Mermaid reference (but it's definitely my favorite disney movie and I recommend it if you haven't seen it yet)
BooksMusicAndSarcasm While Maui was singing you're welcome you can see flounder while the fish are swimming and the movie is reverse the little mermaid
BooksMusicAndSarcasm this is late as hell but you know how Moana and Maui fight Tomatoa? Well at the end during the credits, there is this part where Tomatoa is still on his back and he says "if my name was Sebastian and I had a cool Jamaican accent, you'd totally help me."
Okay, so here is what you do. You search up Hamilton, gets weirdly obsessed with the entire soundtrack, rewatch Moana, and when Hamilton starts singing to you, you'll know :D
Also the Ocean wouldn't let her leave the first time because she technically didn't have the heart yet... lol Don't know how you guys missed that point.
sillau9 the Ocean wasn’t gonna let her Leave cause she didn’t have the Heart Yet. the most important part of that mission was the Heart, so it’d be stupid on the Oceans side if they let her leave without it
What took me by surprise was probably the first song of the film. Cause I didn't know much about the movie going in, so I thought the main conflict would be about her wanting to leave and overprotective dad going "no." While it does do that for the first act of the film, I was surprised that Moana was actually a strong and respectable leader of her community. Unlike another Cheif's daughter who was a "free spirit" and tended to venture as far away from people as possible to have wind blow in her hair and pose attractively with Blonde Mel Gibson. I thought it would also go the route of Brave and so many other "Modern" Disney Princesses where they don't want to be a princess. But Moana never really shyed away from leadership. It does show her rebellious side, but it shows her accepting a leadership role at a young age and is pretty competent at it. Unlike so many other "Princesses" who usually go "Responsibility and community?.. eww. I don't wanta be a princess or leader" I just found that her motivation to save her entire island unique and I can't recall seeing it in another Disney Princess flick. Well maybe accept Mulan but she never wanted to save all of china as her motivation, that kinda fell upon her. Her main motive was her father.
BellyThat Productions lol,you made me crack up about your description about Pocahontas,lol..but yeah,I liked that they had Moana accept and take her role as a daughters chief and be prepared how to lead, even tho she had conflict with her father disobeying anyone to go beyond the reef...but that she took big responsibility to help her people and her homeland/island
One thing I particularly love about Moana is how it addresses trauma. While one main theme is definitely identity, the loss of identity is through severe trauma, and healing is the only thing that allows them to regain their identity. Maui breaks the world because he’s so traumatized by his parents’ abandonment of him that he will go to any extremes to impress and prove his value to humanity. Moana’s father keeps them on the island and refuses to let Moana even learn to sail because of his trauma after trying to leave the island and having his friend die in the process. Te Fiti turns into Te Ka, who people basically see as a monster, because of heat was essentially a horrific violation by Maui, having her very heart stolen from her. It is only through Moana’s acceptance of their fear, of their doubt, of their anger, and her *refusal to be stopped by it* that heals them. She shows her father that you can leave and come back. She shows Maui that you don’t have to save the world to be loved, just take responsibility for your actions and maybe be a good friend. And she shows Te Fiti that someone can recognize you and still show compassion and empathy for you, even when you’re so traumatized and enraged that you barely even recognize yourself. *starts crying every time that “You Know Who You Are” scene plays*
+Tagaloa Tapusoa Now that you mentioned that you're related to The Rock, people are going to read your comment, attack you and asking for pictures for proves. Brace yourself.
Everything Great about Brave. The most underrated Disney movie in my opinion. (Because it came out in 2012, but Frozen came out 2013 so everyone sort of forgot about it.)
Doing a little CinemaWins myself but I love how the intro to CinemaWins uses “but you knew that to be” more soft and welcoming while CinemaSins says “duh” to match it’s less forgiving critiques
You could have been born at any time but you were born in a time where Lin Manuel Miranda exists *look around, look around at how lucky we are to be alive right now*
Gillian Doolittle I was thinking what came put around the same time as Moana and that was my first thought. Also I really, really like that movie so I'm hoping so.
Gillian Doolittle agreed or another Harry Potter, he hasn't gone through them all yet also +Cinemawins, can you win Percy Jackson and the lightning theif and the sea of monsters because I feel like they both get dissed for not really staying with the plot of the books but I think they were fairly good. *Like the comment if you want this to happen peeps!!!!!* *goes down and likes own comment*
AbsoluteHarryPotter Fan I feel like negative is a bit of a wrong way to brand him. It's more for comedy, and yes pointing out that not everything is perfect. However, most movies usually get around the same score, same thing here. Most every movie has praise that can be put toward it.
+Sean McMillan ~ No they are _not_ the same people, I already made this point in this thread. They are completely unrelated channels, barring concept and format. And PokeSins and AnimeWins/AnimeSins are not related, either.
I must say after watch with CinemaSins and CinemaWins of Moana... I enjoy focusing on the good way more then the bad, But that does not mean both is important :3
I always watch the movie, then watch the sins video to poke some fun at it, then watch the wins video to remind me that, no matter what the sins, it's still a good movie
CinemaSins isn't important, though, because a huge proportion of their 'sins" are fake - things that are explained in the film that they claim are not, taking things out of context, etc, etc. There's a number of videos on RUclips explaining how dishonest CS is, and which also demonstrate that their claims they just joking are also dishonest.
Watching this while wearing: (this is my Halloween costume) Shiny leggings Glittery makeup Crab earrings 'I'm So Shiny' shirt Shiny skirt (made by the same material as the leggings) Yep, this gal's goin' as Tamatoa for Halloween.
when you normally watch cinemasins, and everything in cinemawins starts off sounding sarcastic, then you slowly start to realize they're actually being nice, and then it just feels weird XD Also when you notice some of the things they "win" are things they would also likely "sin"
Wait you forgot the part where in the scenes where Maui's tattoos are close up, they paid very close attention to detail on the skin. If you look close enough of your own skin, it has lines and other stuff ( Hard to explain ) and they put that on Maui's skin. I just thought that was cool.
you forgot to win the "Did your granny say listen to your heart? Be who you are on the inside." and "Like a diamond in the rough" references to Pocahontas and Aladdin in "Shiny". But I forgive you. You're welcome. ;)
Moosessurus, I totally agree with you. Not only is it a great gem from Dreamwork's infancy, but it's a spectacular film that can make anyone think, regardless of your views on religion or faiths in general.
I also loved how it's the only version of that story anywhere that remembers and reminds its viewers that Moses and Ramses were brothers and addresses possible family conflict they'd be facing in that story. Regardless of time period, brothers will always be brothers
Yeah. Until one brother realizes that he's destined to liberate the very people the other has been raised to oppress. And once an entire empire and God himself are thrown into the mix, the movie rises to another level.
Same here. After I first sat through the scene with Tamatoa, "Shiny" was stuck in my head for about three days. It _still_ comes back to haunt me. Like right now. Watch me dazzle like a diamond in the rough! Strut my stuff! My stuff is so *shiny!* Bring your armies but they'll never be enough. My shell's too tough! Maui, man! You can try, try, try but you can't expect a demigod to beat a decapod! _(Look it up!)_ Damn you and your masterful lyric-spinning, Tamatoa! Damn you! Get your pincers out of my brain already! :-O
So I have a theory about why Te Ka and Tefiti (sorry not sure how to spell the names). Te Ka is in fact male, and Tefiti is female. Yes they are the same being, but they are also a god. So it is logical that the same being could have 2 genders. When Te Ka is born from the heart being stolen, he is the comolete opposite of Tefiti. He is male, fire, and death. While Tefiti is obviously female ,earth ,and life. Teka cannot touch the ocean and Tefiti works with it. They are the same being, but are both completely different people. Teka is meant to be the polar opposite in every way of Tefiti, including gender. Or at least thats my theory.
In some island nations gods connected to lava and the like are ALSO female, because of the fertility of volcanic ash. The most famous is Pele of course.
8:33 Moana means ocean so when Moana said (Or sang) "I am Moana!" She's saying I am Ocean or I am the Ocean. I like that little thing in the song. It shows how far she's come. *VIVA ROCK VAGUS!!!*
4:12 - Yes, the Rock can sing. Lin-Manuel Miranda researched his wrestling ring singing (ing x 4 woah) to write "You're Welcome" to perfectly fit Dwayne Johnson's vocal range. Also, LMM was cheated out of an Oscar this year. Boo La La Land (La x3?).
I never knew why Moana was chosen by the ocean, or why the ocean couldn't get the Heart of Te Fiti to, well, Te Fiti. But now, thanks to this video, I know why. Te Kà can't touch water, since it's a fire demon. Man I was dumb 😂😅

The first time I watched it, I remember the only thought I gave the shell was “How are the other chiefs gonna put theirs on?” Then I shrugged (internally) and returned to the movie.
I never thought of it like that, I just thought it was a call back to the shell from when she was little but I guess it’s both! :)
I mean I figured they were all leaving to find new islands sense Moana can sail and everything's good agian it was a symbol for finding a new home and remembering where they came from

a missed win for the fact that everything maui mentions doing in “you’re welcome” is actually pulled from his real life mythology!
8:32 I like how they told Moana that it's okay. Someone else can do it if you can't/ aren't up for the task. There's nothing to worry about. You're not a failure. She didn't fail anyone, she did her very best.
9:15 I would like to point out Maui's long beautiful hair as well. I was going to say the elegant dress like body that she had.
plus his tattoos. its very representative of the traditional reason FOR tattooing. your body is your story!
Nothing on the scene where he throws her off the boat, ocean brings her back, he throws the heart, ocean hits him in the head with it.

There’s a video that explains it better that I’ll link and give the title for:
How Disney Uses Languages

SIDEWAYS!!!! WOOO!!!!
HELL YEAH SIDEWAYS
Didn’t they do it for the circle of life in the lion king.
As a south east asian, I feel so jealous. We got Raya which clearly isn't a good representation SEA culture.
This is my favorite song in the movie. Thanks for the link!
“I have crossed the horizon to find you” (“Know Who You Are” from the soundtrack) always makes me cry.
same here! it's one of my favourite cinematic scenes ever, it's so powerful
Hmmm, grandma ray,..... orrrrrrrrrrrr grandmanta may? Oops ray.
The horizon is only 6 km away...
Yes! That scene is so emotionally powerful, I get chills everytime.
What I love about Moana is how even though she's not the first Disney princess to want to explore outside her home and experience adventure, she wanted to do that AND save her people. she was genuinely ready and willing to become the chief of her tribe and lead them to a whole new world of possibility and I think that's just amazing
Anna wanted to explore outside her home (the castle) AND she wanted to save the people of Arendelle.
pandafeels Anna wanted to meet a boy. She wanted a boy so badly she put her whole kingdom in jeopardy.
She never intentionally put the kingdom in danger and she tried to make it right as soon as she realised what Elsa had done, and then she stopped Hans from killing Elsa once she got out of the castle after finding out that he was evil.
pandafeels So, she put her kingdom in danger. I never said she did it intentionally.

THE PIG
Another thing I like about Maui's character that is exemplified in "Your Welcome". Maui did SO MANY heroic things and gave humanity so many gifts. But what did everyone know him for? For stealing the heart of Te Fiti. Brilliantly showcasing that it does not matter how many good deeds you will do, you will always be known for your mistakes.
Honestly this

“Because Alan Tudyk is always a win”. But seriously Alan Tudyk is always a win.
Still amazed that you got to Hawaii from the Asia side of the sea too that's a big trip from the closest island
Her father tells her:
"Our people will need a chief
And there you are
There comes a day
When you're gonna look around
And realize happiness is
Where you are"
...and that's what she does. It's nice to find a movie that is a nice medium between independence and responsibility without saying either is inherently bad. ♥
It's all true and awesome points. For the people who say moana disobeys her dad when you think about it almost all Disney princess disobeyed one of their parents or step parent
rockstar 101 Bro i can type 80 WPM. Im fast.
I toyally agree with that ! This movie is a story about maturing, self-accomplishment and caring about the loved ones. She came to realize that happiness is not just about living your dreams, but sharing them with those you care about the most. And that's why I loved Moana.
scarred child gghnhnhhtbg Kassy Wassy
I was going to say something similar, but then I realized everything I was going to say, you've already said better. Unlike most Disney princesses, who basically abandon their kingdom to go on a quest, she wants to stay and help her people. She doesn't leave until it becomes clear that leaving is the only way to save them.
*Ever since Moana placed the shell on top of the rocks I’ve always thought,*
_“So if someone else decide to become the chief after Moana dies, how are they gonna put something on top of the rock then will it just crush the shell?”_
Exactly
They’re voyagers now, they don’t need to be.. so.. *set in stone*
I’m sorry that was bad
i was thinking they would use smaller rocks to hold up the next rock like pillars
I think they all left the island, and the shell was placed there to represent the fact that they were done with the island and that era had ended for them, so they won't need to place a new rock.

11:05 Look at were the shell is laying. It is like that the ozean wanted to show Moana that the heart of Tafiti belongs in the middle of the spiral.
I will point out that Maui also has long, flowing hair, so hair length is probably not a good indication of lava monster gender.

Actually, it should be 118 for three reasons:
1. Lin-Manuel Miranda SANG in the movie
2. Lin-Manuel Miranda worked on the movie
3. The Little Mermaid reference
(but it's definitely my favorite disney movie and I recommend it if you haven't seen it yet)
where is the little mermaid reference? i'm asking for a friend
I knew Lin worked on the songs but i didn't know he sang in the movie? What part did he sing?
Okay, so here is what you do. You search up Hamilton, gets weirdly obsessed with the entire soundtrack, rewatch Moana, and when Hamilton starts singing to you, you'll know :D
Also the Ocean wouldn't let her leave the first time because she technically didn't have the heart yet... lol
Don't know how you guys missed that point.
Midnightmelodythings what did u mean that 'the ocean wouldn't let her leave first time', if u dont mind to explain? Please
sillau9 the Ocean wasn’t gonna let her Leave cause she didn’t have the Heart Yet. the most important part of that mission was the Heart, so it’d be stupid on the Oceans side if they let her leave without it
Also you know... the wind and the moon are the two things that control the tide
You mean to tell me you missed the chance to call Moana’s grandmother gamaray
“I’m the village crazy lady that’s my job” she is my spirit animal 🤣🤣

Because he didn't write the score

Rawr Rawrington that makes sense
In some island nations gods connected to lava and the like are ALSO female, because of the fertility of volcanic ash. The most famous is Pele of course.
is that a memo it is so inspiring
Well if thats your theory then your theory is correct. They are indeed supposed to be complete polar opposites.
Rawr Rawrington I like it

Moana means ocean so when Moana said (Or sang) "I am Moana!" She's saying I am Ocean or I am the Ocean. I like that little thing in the song. It shows how far she's come.
*VIVA ROCK VAGUS!!!*
Wait... Sleeping Giant? YOURE FROM CONNECTICUT?
I don't think anybody is from Connecticut... Actually, never mind, apparently that is how you spell Connecticut. You learn something new every day.
I'm from CT. Yeah... It is spelt a bit odd, but when you live in a place it sticks.
Still not as weird as how you spell Massachusetts
.. I used to think Louisiana was hard to spell and now I feel bad
There's also a Sleeping Giant in Montana :)
can we just acknowledge how beautiful Tecah's "hair" effects are? the vines and stuff are so magnificent!
When Jango Felt tells you what's up, you listen.
"Does this scene make anyone else want to controll maui in some kind of infamous like game?"
Stop. No, stop. Get out of my head.

Haters:What the rock can't sing this is fake
Maui/the rock:Hold my necklace
The place you go after Cinemasins puts you down.
Or, as the Birdman says, SKIP **DING**
And then Hei hei went on to live 4,000 years longer than any other chicken.
Tapdancing Giraffe Hei Hei is obviously chicken Jesus.
No worries, I hadn't even thought of the question! So there is always dumber ;-)
Lin Manuel-Miranda and Hamilton are freaking amazing, and I think I can get a lot of people to agree with me!
I agree! And yes, I know I’m very late.
I‘m even later and I agree with you.
AGREEEEEEEEED.
i am still singing both "shiny" and "you're welcome" weeks after watching this movie
And there's people like me that created a Tamatoa fanbase..
Alright Disney, i know we have two living parents, but if you killed that peg... Phew. 😂😂😂😁 I cried laughing. 2:17
